DESCRIPTION:On view Dec. 2\, 2011-March 4\, 2012\n\nSculpture display by
Scottish artist Siobhan Healy. The inspiration for the artist's subtle
and thought-provoking piece is the Ghost Orchid (Epipogium aphyllum)\, a
rare British wild flower recently rediscovered after it was thought to
be extinct for 23 years. Healy depicts the orchid in transient and ether
eal clear glass\, encouraging the viewer to reflect on the potential los
s of this fragile species—an evocative emblem of the one in five of wild
flowers that are threatened with extinction.

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Preston Scott Cohen\n\nOn display Jan. 24 – March
  4\, 2012 \nGallery hours: Monday – Friday\, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nGund Hall
 Gallery\n\nLightfall\, an exhibition featuring models\, photographs\, di
agrams\, video and digital images\, is not only an exhibition design and
a presentation of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s new Amir Building. It is
an architectural intervention in the Harvard Graduate School of Design
that embodies the deeply interiorized concept of the Amir Building’s "Li
ghtfall\," an 87-foot-tall spiraling atrium\, by inserting a model of it
in what appears to be a space that exceeds the limit of the Gund Hall G
allery. The exhibition explores the relationship between pedagogy and pr
actice by including spatial concepts that many GSD students will remembe
r from three foundational projects in the first-year core curriculum of
architecture: the "Hidden Room\," the “Lodged House\,” and the “Lock Bui
lding.” \n\nLocated at the center of Tel Aviv’s cultural complex\, the A
mir Building posed an extraordinary architectural challenge: to reconcil
e the tight\, idiosyncratic triangular site with the museum's need for a
series of large\, neutral rectangular galleries. The solution: the twis
ting geometric surfaces of the Lightfall connect the disparate angles be
tween the galleries and the context while\, also refracting natural ligh
t into the deepest recesses of the half-buried building.

DESCRIPTION:Mollusks: Shelled Masters of the Marine Realm\, a new exhibi
tion opening February 18\, 2012 at Harvard Museum of Natural History\, w
ill explore mollusks' amazing diversity and feature recent discoveries a
bout their evolutionary history. Mollusks are amazingly varied in both
size and anatomical structure\, as well as in their behaviors and habit
ats. First appearing in the fossil record in the Cambrian period more t
han 500 million years ago\, mollusks include the brainy cephalopods such
as octopus and squid\; the abundant gastropods\, creatures that produce
a single shell\, such as snails\; as well as the numerous bivalves\, s
uch as oysters\, clams and mussels\, that are deliciously edible to huma
ns\, and often prized for their shells.\n \n On Thursday February 16\, t
he Mollusks exhibition opening lecture will be presented by Gonzalo Giri
bet\, Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of In
vertebrates in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Giribet will explore h
ow scientists are mapping the Mollusca genetic family tree\, to learn ho
w they’ve adapted\, survived and thrived since the pre-Cambrian era and
to understand their incredibly adaptive and complex biology. The 6 pm l
ecture will be free and open to the public.
