An exhibition that shines a light on the press, modernism, and the generation of writers, artists, jazz musicians, and exiles in Paris after the First World War. The Black Sun Press, founded by Caresse and Harry Crosby in Paris in the 1920s, is emblematic of the avant-garde nature and adventurous spirit of the Lost Generation during that time. The Mind's Eye is an exhibit of Myron McGhee's photographs of Tibetan monks painting sand mandalas at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

While the monks focus their attention on the artistic elements of creating the sand mandala, they also devote their minds to meditation for the healing of the earth. Observing their sacred practice, our eyes are drawn to the exquisite beauty of their art, and our minds are inspired by their religious devotion.

This collection of photographs will be on exhibit at various venues on Emory's campus throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. The exhibit is curated by Juana Clem McGhee and made possible through generous support from the university and other organizations in the Atlanta area.

Emory Visual Arts Gallery

Planned in consultation with Jacquelynn Baas, author of Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today, this exhibit brings together contemporary artists who explore the mandala form as artistic expression and as a tool for transformation and balance in our complex world. This exploration takes many forms, from redrafting traditional visual depictions to the use of new materials, to the performance body participating in the mandala form.

A mandala by New York artist and Morehouse College alumnus Sanford Biggers forms the centerpiece of the gallery, providing a dynamic space for music and dance. Surrounding this performance space are the works of artists Don Cooper, Faith McClure, Christopher McNulty, Andra Samelson, King Thackston, and Marcia Vaitsman. From transcendent abstracts to repetitive patterns, the multi-media works by these artists use the mandala and its residual power to address today’s physical, cultural, environmental, and cosmological issues.

“Past Meets Present: Highlights from the Emory University Archives Collections”

Exhibit includes Dooley’s suit and shoes; the Collard Leaf (the oldest student publication in the archives, from 1867); early Emory textbooks and library books, records from the Board of Trustees, photographs of student and Greek life on campus, a D.V.S. Senior Society pipe carved with Dooley’s likeness, and much more. Curated by John Bence, Kate Donovan Jarvis and Kate Stratton.

Dr. Goler will also present the Emory Friends of Dance Lecture on February 7 at 7:30pm, discussing the contemplative artistry of Dianne McIntyre.

Veta Goler is Division Coordinator for Arts and Humanities and Associate Professor of Dance at Spelman College. After working as a modern dance artist and dance historian—choreographing, performing, and presenting her research (on contemporary African American women modern dance choreographers), nationally and internationally—and publishing in several journals and anthologies, she has shifted her research interests to explorations of contemplative practices in education and the workplace. She is a national Circle of Trust® Approach facilitator, and leads retreats, workshops, and other activities based in the work of education innovator Parker J. Palmer.

John Dunne, Associate Professor of Religion at Emory University gives a lecture titled Embodying Nirvana: Meditations on Buddhist Mandalas.
For the casual observer, a mandala appears to be a beautiful, geometrical design, but for the practitioner of Buddhist tantra, the mandala is a bridge to an alternative reality in which the wondrous qualities of enlightenment are literally embodied. Drawing on traditional Buddhist theories and current work on the nature of human cognition, this talk presents the central features of tantric meditation on mandalas along with its connection to the transformation of mind and body.

"Eraserhead," Film Screening

(1977) This is the first feature film created by David Lynch, who went on to the "The Elephant Man," "Dune," many other films, and the popular television series, "Twin Peaks." Fans of the film include Stanley Kubrick, Mel Brooks, George Lucas, and John Waters. According to commentaries, Kubrick considered it his "most spiritual movie." The discussant, Dr. Mark James, has been intrigued by the film for many years due to its strange, evocative, dreamlike, surreal, primary process qualities. What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely.

Discussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA), Todd Cronan (Emory), Lisa Florman (Ohio State), Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory), Sarah Hamill (Oberlin), Gordon Hughes (Rice), Dalia Judowitz (Emory), Andrew Mitchell (Emory), Charles Palermo (William and Mary), Michael Schreyach (Trinity), and others.

Held in conjunction with "Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962" at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. On View in the John Howett Works on Paper Gallery from Feb. 4 - May 20, 2012.

It is the special character of works on paper that they are scaled to the human body. Whether it is a woodcut, lithograph, drawing, or a printed book, these media address the body in a different way from painting, sculpture, or cinema. The eleven books and works of art exhibited in Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962 carry a sense of intimacy that is related to the touch of the hand and to the seated body. Works like Vasily Kandinsky’s woodcut Schwarzer Fleck or Henri Matisse’s illustrated collection, Poèmes de Charles d’Orléans, are not meant to be viewed or read in traditional ways. They solicit many of the feelings associated with the intimacy of reading, but at the same time frustrate any effort to approach them as texts to be read or stories to be told. Rather, we look at these works, we see them, and we respond to them as visual phenomena of a highly sophisticated order. All of the books and works of art in this exhibition are from the permanent collection of Works on Paper at the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Books Library of Emory University.

Tricky Titans, bundles of nymphs, and a revolving-door account of divine succession fill the thousand-plus lines of Hesiod’s Theogony, a mythical account of how the world came to be— and how a poet got his voice. Led by Dr. Sandra Blakely, Associate Professor in the Classics Department, readers will dive into the poetry and mythology of this late eighth-century BC poem, considering its historical context and Near Eastern influences; the ritual realities and local cults of the gods; and contemporary hypotheses for the meaning of the poem, preserved from the earliest boundary of the Greek literary tradition. "Sweet Smell of Success" was dubbed by one period reviewer “one of the most cynical movies ever made.” The steely stillness of Burt Lancaster’s performance as the Walter Winchell-based columnist J.J. Hunsecker may have justly earned him a place in AFI’s top 50 movie villains but Tony Curtis’ endlessly ingratiating and deliciously craven press agent Sidney Falco is the heart of this black-hearted movie: That is, if you don’t count Howe’s rendering of New York City itself. Voted onto the National Film Registry in 1993.

Emory scholars Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao lead readers through The Ramayana.
One of India's two major pan-Indian epics, the Ramayana has had a long and sustained history in the development of civilizational values in South Asia. The Ramayana has multiple regional language versions, both literary and oral, in addition to a number of literary forms in Sanskrit itself. It's popularity and influence cannot be over estimated. Its characters are larger than life, occupy an imagined timeless past, and at the same time, they are household names, as familiar as next door neighbors speaking to the present. Episodes from the Ramayana are represented in every conceivable medium: poetry, drama, dance, song, sculpture, painting and film. Since the text of the full Ramayana is too long for our book group, Drs. Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $50 for non-members and includes the cost of the book.

The first of five films to team Mann and Alton, this low budget, “case-file” crime drama became a major hit for the young Eagle-Lion studio. Though initially received as a new high in location-based realism, today Alton’s low-key lighting effects virtually define film noir visuals at their most stylized, expressionistic extreme.

This beautiful film provides a window into the life of distinguished Georgia-born writer Raymond Andrews, whose papers MARBL holds. The film includes interviews with Andrews family members, including Raymond’s brother, artist Benny Andrews. Following the film, which premiered on GPB Television in September 2010, Emory Department of History faculty member Gyan Pandey will offer a commentary based on his own research on the Andrews family and will engage filmmaker Jesse Freeman in a conversation about the legacy of this distinguished Georgia family.

Gloria Ferrari Pinney, Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Art at Harvard University delivers the annual Phi Beta Kappa Lecture, Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.

In the 330s BCE the Athenians dedicated to Pythian Apollo at Delphi an extraordinary monument: a gigantic column wrapped in acanthus leaves, on top of which are three dancing maidens who hold aloft over their heads a large bronze tripod. Why this and why now? The years are a particularly dramatic period in Athenian history, one that opens in 338 with the crushing defeat of the Athenian and Boeotian forces at Chaeronea and the prospect of a Macedonian invasion. Nearly 120 years since its discovery, the meaning of the Column and the occasion for its dedication remain hotly debated topics. This lecture traces the disparate elements of this assemblage to parallels in visual and poetic imagery and identifies in it a representation of a cosmic landmark that is relevant to both Helios Apollo and to its Athenian sponsors.

Urban Mandala Workshop

Kimberly Carmody from Urban River Arts in New York and museum volunteers will be on hand to help participants of all ages create a giant mandala from natural and recyclable materials. Visitors will help create the mandala design by using a large-scale compass, a string, and a piece of chalk. Then visitors will create the colors and textures of the mandala by filling the sections with found and re-purposed materials. Once it is finished, participants will participate in a dismantling ceremony where they may take and reuse and recycle the materials. This is a drop-in event. Visitors may come for any length of time between noon and 5 pm.

One of India's two major pan-Indian epics, the Ramayana has had a long and sustained history in the development of civilizational values in South Asia. The Ramayana has multiple regional language versions, both literary and oral, in addition to a number of literary forms in Sanskrit itself. It's popularity and influence cannot be over estimated. Its characters are larger than life, occupy an imagined timeless past, and at the same time, they are household names, as familiar as next door neighbors speaking to the present. Episodes from the Ramayana are represented in every conceivable medium: poetry, drama, dance, song, sculpture, painting and film. Since the text of the full Ramayana is too long for our book group, Drs. Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $50 for non-members and includes the cost of the book.

Rob Walker is the former Consumed columnist for the New York Times Magazine, the author of Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, and the founder of The Unconsumption Project. In an informal conversation, Mr. Walker and Bobbi Patterson of Emory’s Department of Religion, will discuss one of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism—that suffering is caused by desire—and the complexity of navigating a culture in which “desire” is manufactured by product designers and advertising agencies, and driven by our own consumerism.

"Women and Water" is created and performed by Jan Akers, Anna Leo, Lisa Paulsen, Sally Radell, Rosalind Staib, Leslie Taylor, and Lori Teague. Theater and Dance faculty come together for the first time to collaborate and intertwine movement and text around the theme of water. Fueled by storytelling, these creators delve into image-based moments that are personal and extraordinary to convey the impact of various states of water.

"Vessel" is a performance ritual capturing the issues surrounding women who collect and manage water resources in underdeveloped countries. Performed by Nathalie Angel, Kala Davis, Amy Rosenblum, and Luna Vorster and choreographed by Lori Teague.

This Tennessee Williams-scripted, Elia Kazan-directed black comedy-drama sensation (Variety wanted to know how it got past the Code) made overnight film stars out of Baker and Wallach in their first starring roles as a teenage Mississippi Delta bride still sleeping in a crib and her would-be seducer. Williams, Baker and supporting actress Mildred Dunnock all earned Academy Award nominations, as did Boris Kaufman’s cinematography.
