February 12 - American Eagle From the pristine wilderness of Alaska to the Upper Mississippi River Valley, American Eagle goes behind the scenes and into the nest to provide the ultimate bird's eye view into the private life of an American icon.

February 19 - Fortress of the Bears Admiralty Island in Southeast Alaska supports the largest concentration of bears anywhere in the world. Sustained by a wealth of salmon streams, isolated and protected by their environment, some 1,700 Alaskan brown bears are part of a unique circle of life that has played out here for centuries.

February 26 - Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom Come discover wolverines, among the most elusive creatures on the planet. They seek out the toughest terrain - the most rugged, remote and fiercely raw - and they've always been scarce to begin with. So they're hard to find. They weigh only about 30 pounds, but they have a ton of attitude and a reputation to match.

March 4 - Raccoon Nation Are people, in an effort to outwit raccoons, actually making them smarter and unwittingly contributing to their evolutionary success? Are the ever more complex obstacles that our fast-paced, urban world throws at them actually pushing the development of raccoon brains?

March 11 - The Himalayas Take a stunning journey to the Himalayas. From Everest to the Tibetan Plateau, from the Gaumukh to the Ganges, this episode introduces us to a complex, interconnected natural world that continues to inspire, challenge and amaze the human race.

March 18 - The Animal House Skyscrapers towering over major cities or spectacularly-designed bridges often come to mind when we think of great feats in architecture and engineering. However, some of the most amazing, creative, and innovative structures on earth are not man-made or urban at all, but residences built by animals in the natural world.

Full Moon Walk and Dessert

Everything changes after dark -- the trails, the trees, and even the sounds. Join us this winter and spring for a moonlit walk. You'll get to test your night vision and other senses as we leisurely walk along the trails. You might hear the call of an owl or the howl of a distant coyote. After the hike enjoy some tasty treats for dessert. Be sure to dress for the weather, bring a flashlight, and let us know if you have any food allergies.

Snowshoeing by the Full Moon

A white expanse of snow blanketing the forest, the moon creeping up through the silhouettes of pines, and the stars twinkling overhead. All set the scene for a guided Full Moon Snowshoe Walk at Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge. The trail winds through the forest to apond where the moon will be rising. Survival of plants and animals as well as lunar folklore are discussed along the way. Participants must provide their own snowshoes - they can be rented from REI or Eastern Mountain Sports. Note: If the trails are too icy or there is no snow, the program will be cancelled.

Parents' Night Out

Dinner Reservations? Check! Verified Theatre Time? Check! Booked Babysitter? Uh oh. Don't fret, Let Audubon handle childcare for you with our new Parents Night Out Program. Kids ages 6 to 10 will enjoy a fun filled and educational evening under the supervision of Audubon Society of RI educators. While you enjoy your night out, your child will be involved in hands-on activities including hikes, games, crafts, a live animal interview and more. Their night will wind down with a snack and a nature movie while they await your arrival at pick-up time.

Drop-off starts at 6:30 pm and runs through 7:00 pm. Children can be picked up anytime between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. Pick-up ends promptly at 10:00 pm. Class size is limited to 20 children and advanced registration is required.

Please dress for the weather and bring a snack or lunch if you wish enjoy it in the barn after the program. Please note we will have a wood fire stove keeping us warm, so caregivers are required to keep a close eye on children.

Prudence Island Tour and Seal Watch

Meet at Bristol Ferry Landing to go to Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Prudence Island, RI
Saturday, February 18, 2012, 9:45am – 4:30pm

Come and explore Prudence Island with a chance to see seals at one of the best haul-out spots in Narragansett Bay. You will also learn about ecological research happening in and around the Bay through the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve. Set out for the south end of the island and a popular seal haul-out at low tide. View the seals using spotting scopes and enjoy a brief presentation about the seals' life cycle and migration to Narragansett Bay. After viewing seals and having lunch at the Center, we will tour in our van with stops to visit the island's one-room schoolhouse, cultural and historic sites, salt marshes and beaches.

The day begins at 9:45am with a half-hour ferry ride leaving Bristol at 10:00am to Prudence Island. You will be greeted at the ferry landing by an educator from the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve based on Prudence Island. A short van ride will bring us to the Research Reserve's 'Lab' Learning Center where we can store lunches in our fridge, use the facilities. At the end of the day you will return to the Prudence Island ferry landing to catch the 4:00pm ferry back to Bristol and arriving there by 4:30pm.

What to Bring: Roughly $7.00 for the round-trip ferry ticket (cash or check only), binoculars, camera, a packed lunch, water bottle, insect and tick repellent, comfortable footwear and warm, waterproof clothes in case of inclement weather.

Winter Walk

Join Kimball naturalist Bob Kenney on an exploration of the snow-covered woods and fields of the Kimball Wildlife Refuge and Burlingame State Park next door, in the quietest season of the year. Our past winter walks have discovered deer and fox tracks in the snow; crossbills in the pines; otters, muskrats, and even bald eagles on the frozen pond; and a Northern Three-Toed Woodpecker in 1991. We'll finish by warming up around the stove with a steaming bowl of vegetarian chili. Start wishing for fresh snow now (good for tracks), only not as much as in some years!

You can help bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds survive in your area by providing them with a sturdy nesting box. Participants will learn about bluebirds and other cavity nesters, when and where to place the nest box, and how to care for it. Each parent/child pair will complete one kit. Additional kits may be purchased for $15 each. All building materials are provided, but participants should bring a hammer and safety glasses for each builder.

Pre-registration is required to assure there are enough materials.

In the early twentieth century while Historical Societies were placing monuments and plaques around Rhode Island to preserve historical sites, many places of Narragansett tribal memory were forgotten and left vulnerable to private sale and developers. Now, a few newly-discovered places are being preserved while still others are "tucked away deep in the woods", known only to a few. In exploring places of Narragansett tribal memory, this lecture, presented by author Robert Geake, will chronicle the inscribed rocks of Narragansett Bay as well as of some of those sites that have faded from the pages of white history, but are still places of meaning for the Narragansett Tribe.

Robert will be available after the lecture to sign copies of his book A History of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island: Keepers of the Bay.

Whether the image captures the stalking stance of a great blue heron just before he strikes a fish or a peaceful morning fog over a river, Tina McCurdy invites viewers to gaze into a moment in time. For almost 20 years, she has illustrated medical journals, scientific posters, and symposia. Tina has traveled around the globe and her illustrations of local flora and fauna place a time-stamp on each journey. Now, her travels can be seen through the array of pieces in this exhibit.

Meet the artist at the exhibit opening on Sunday, March 4 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The exhibit will run through the end of April, 2012.

Prudence Island Tour and Seal Watch

Meet at Bristol Ferry Landing to go to Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Prudence Island, RI
Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 9:45am – 4:30pm

Come and explore Prudence Island with a chance to see seals at one of the best haul-out spots in Narragansett Bay. You will also learn about ecological research happening in and around the Bay through the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve. Set out for the south end of the island and a popular seal haul-out at low tide. View the seals using spotting scopes and enjoy a brief presentation about the seals' life cycle and migration to Narragansett Bay. After viewing seals and having lunch at the Center, we will tour in our van with stops to visit the island's one-room schoolhouse, cultural and historic sites, salt marshes and beaches.

The day begins at 9:45am with a half-hour ferry ride leaving Bristol at 10:00am to Prudence Island. You will be greeted at the ferry landing by an educator from the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve based on Prudence Island. A short van ride will bring us to the Research Reserve's 'Lab' Learning Center where we can store lunches in our fridge, use the facilities. At the end of the day you will return to the Prudence Island ferry landing to catch the 4:00pm ferry back to Bristol and arriving there by 4:30pm.

What to Bring: Roughly $7.00 for the round-trip ferry ticket (cash or check only), binoculars, camera, a packed lunch, water bottle, insect and tick repellent, comfortable footwear and warm, waterproof clothes in case of inclement weather.

Full Moon Walk and Dessert

Everything changes after dark -- the trails, the trees, and even the sounds. Join us this winter and spring for a moonlit walk. You'll get to test your night vision and other senses as we leisurely walk along the trails. You might hear the call of an owl or the howl of a distant coyote. Parents' Night Out

Dinner Reservations? Check! Verified Theatre Time? Check! Booked Babysitter? Uh oh. Don't fret, Let Audubon handle childcare for you with our new Parents Night Out Program. Kids ages 6 to 10 will enjoy a fun filled and educational evening under the supervision of Audubon Society of RI educators. While you enjoy your night out, your child will be involved in hands-on activities including hikes, games, crafts, a live animal interview and more. Their night will wind down with a snack and a nature movie while they await your arrival at pick-up time.

Drop-off starts at 6:30 pm and runs through 7:00 pm. Children can be picked up anytime between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. Pick-up ends promptly at 10:00 pm. Class size is limited to 20 children and advanced registration is required.
