 ill speak on\n\n“Forces Involving Colloidal Particles”\n\n\nAbstract: M
any phenomena with colloidal particles are governed by particle-particle
or particle-substrate interactions. Examples include stability and rheo
logy of colloidal suspensions\, particle deposition\, or emulsion stabil
ization. While the importance of these interaction forces has been appre
ciated for a long time\, to measure such forces directly became possible
only relatively recently. In the meantime\, various techniques are beco
ming available\, but the colloidal probe technique based on the atomic f
orce microscope (AFM) is clearly emerging as the most promising and vers
atile one. \n\nThe present talk will discuss the use of the colloidal pr
obe technique to measure forces between colloidal particles. In particul
ar\, we will demonstrate that interactions between similar as well as di
ssimilar particles are principally controlled by electrostatic double-la
yer and van der Waals forces as described by the theory of Derjaguin\, L
andau\, Verwey and Overbeek (DLVO). For dissimilar particles\, charge re
gulation effects can become very important. The talk will further focus
on direct force measurements between charged colloidal particles in the
presence of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Two additional non-DLVO
forces come into play. Electrostatic forces induced by the patch-charge
heterogeneities introduce an important long-range component to the inte
raction force. Bridging forces substantially influence adhesion between
particles\, and they can be directly detected by observing the single mo
lecule bridging events with the AFM. \n\nRefreshments at 9:30 a.m.
