Media artist, John G. Rives, to present at Clarkson

Rives designs interactive narratives for grown-ups. Part poet, part storyteller, Rives offers audiences uniquely intelligent and creative entertainment—too impossible to categorize.

For his avid use of technology, he’s been called "the first 2.0 poet," incorporating images, video, and text—often of audience members or the venue itself—with tremendous ease and effect.

Flat pages can't contain Rives' storytelling, even when paper is his medium. He's a paper engineer and designer. The pop-up books he creates for children unfold with surprise: The Christmas Pop-Up Present expands to reveal moving parts, hidden areas and miniature booklets inside.

He has made multiple appearances at the TED Conference and has published several pop-up books for children. He co-hosted the television special 'Ironic Iconic America' with Tommy Hilfiger, discussing how pop culture has influenced American tastes and styles.

While English is his native language, he is also fluent in American Sign Language, Latin, Ancient Greek and speaks conversational French.

John G. Rives is a performance poet, storyteller, and author and the 2004 National Poetry Slam winner. He has appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and on multiple seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam and was a member of the Def Poetry international tour group.

On stage, his poems burst in many directions, too, exposing multiple layers and unexpected treats: childhood memories, grown-up humor, notions of love and lust, of what is lost forever and of what's still out there waiting to unfold.

Some of his most well-known performances on Def Poetry Jam include a story about poetry in the deaf community, a description of his post-coital bliss, and the performance "Dirty Talk" about what people say during sex.

“Polymers incorporating N-alkyl urea peptoids: Self-assembled aggregates, step-growth polymers and polymer conjugates.”

Abstract: N-alkyl urea peptoids are oligomeric biomimetic molecules that can be thought of as hybrids between oligoureas, N-acyl glycines (peptoids) and 2-γ peptides. By virtue of their iterative synthesis strategy a wide variety of functional side chains can be incorporated and the urea functionality facilitates hydrogen bonding leading to self-assembly properties. This presentation will detail the use of N-alkyl urea peptoids as functional oligomers for conjugation to controlled molecular weight polymers, as monomers for step growth polymerization leading to molecular brushes, and their ability to form self-assembled fibers. The controlled polymers are prepared using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, allowing the formation of block copolymers comprising a range of functional monomers. It is anticipated that the polymer conjugates will have a range of applications, including as therapeutics.

Memory Circuit Elements: Properties and Applications

Abstract: I will start with considering spin memory effects in semiconductors. In particular, when current flows through a semiconductor/ferromagnet junction, the device resistance acquires memory since it depends on the state and history of the system. I will thus demonstrate that certain semiconductor spintronics devices belong to a broad class of memory circuit elements including memory resistive (memristive), memory capacitive (memcapacitive) and memory inductive (meminductive) systems. Recently, a number of experimental structures exhibiting memory properties have been identified showing that these memory circuit elements can offer completely new functionalities for both information processing and analog electronics. I will discuss several emerging experimental realizations of systems with memory and their applications ranging from biologically-inspired circuits to neuromorphic and cellular computing.

American Uprising is the untold story of America’s largest slave revolt. American Uprising is the riveting and long-neglected story of this elaborate plot, the rebel army’s dramatic march on the city and its shocking conclusion. No North American slave revolt—not Gabriel Prosser, not Denmark Vesey, not Nat Turner—has rivaled the scale of this rebellion either in terms of the number of the slaves involved or in terms of the number who were killed.

Through groundbreaking original research, Daniel Rasmussen offers a window into the young expansionist country, illuminating the early history of New Orleans and providing new insight into the path to the Civil War, and the slave revolutionaries who fought and died while standing up against injustice. This book represents a significant contribution to African American history and the struggle for civil rights in this country.

At Harvard, Rasmussen focused on studying slavery and the American South. He won the History and Literature sophomore essay prize for his essay on American expansion in Florida. His junior year, he began work on the 1811 German Coast Uprising–the largest slave revolt in American history. Over the next two years, Rasmussen performed research in New Orleans, Washington, DC, and Massachussetts, digging up letters, traveler’s narratives, naval records, court records, planter statements of accounts, and newspaper articles—anything that would help provide insight into the revolt. In order to piece together this broad assortment of fragmentary evidence, Rasmussen built two databases with information about each slave and their actions in the revolt. Using these databases and his wide collection of primary and secondary sources, he constructed a rich, multi—layered history that brought the slave revolt to life.

Rasmussen’s thesis won the Kathryn Ann Huggins Prize, the Perry Miller Prize and the Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize, Harvard’s top undergraduate academic honor. The thesis is the basis for Rasmussen’s first book, American Uprising: The Untold Story of America’s Largest Slave Revolt.

Daniel Rasmussen was born and raised in Washington, DC, where he attended St. Albans School. In high school, Rasmussen became passionate about investigative journalism. He led his high school paper to become the first private school winner of the national Journalism Education Association’s Impact Award for student journalism that makes a difference in the community. He spent every summer working for his local weekly, The Current, covering local politics at the grassroots level. In 2005, the Maryland—Delaware—DC Press Foundation named Rasmussen high school journalist of the year. He also spent a summer working for Roll Call newspaper on Capitol Hill. In addition to journalism, Rasmussen was a national medalist in rowing and was named a Washington Post All—Met athlete.
