The Mind's Eye is an exhibit of Myron McGhee's photographs of Tibetan monks painting sand mandalas at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

While the monks focus their attention on the artistic elements of creating the sand mandala, they also devote their minds to meditation for the healing of the earth. Observing their sacred practice, our eyes are drawn to the exquisite beauty of their art, and our minds are inspired by their religious devotion.

This collection of photographs will be on exhibit at various venues on Emory's campus throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. The exhibit is curated by Juana Clem McGhee and made possible through generous support from the university and other organizations in the Atlanta area.

New Audiences, New Forms

Emory Visual Arts Gallery

Planned in consultation with Jacquelynn Baas, author of Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today, this exhibit brings together contemporary artists who explore the mandala form as artistic expression and as a tool for transformation and balance in our complex world. This exploration takes many forms, from redrafting traditional visual depictions to the use of new materials, to the performance body participating in the mandala form.

A mandala by New York artist and Morehouse College alumnus Sanford Biggers forms the centerpiece of the gallery, providing a dynamic space for music and dance. Surrounding this performance space are the works of artists Don Cooper, Faith McClure, Christopher McNulty, Andra Samelson, King Thackston, and Marcia Vaitsman. From transcendent abstracts to repetitive patterns, the multi-media works by these artists use the mandala and its residual power to address today’s physical, cultural, environmental, and cosmological issues.

Dr. Weidong Yang - A Speedy Service for Nucleocytoplasmic Transport

The nuclear pore complex (NPC), the sole gateway for nucleocytoplasmic exchange in eukaryotic cells, allows for the passive diffusion of small molecules and transport-receptor-facilitated translocation of signal-dependent cargo molecules. Whether small molecules passively diffuse through a single central channel or through multiple holes of a hydrogel network is a subject of debate. Additionally, whether the passive and facilitated transport systems occupy distinct or overlapping physical regions of the NPC remains unclear. Here, we directly test these models using an innovative three-dimensional super-resolution fluorescence microscopy of human cells. This approach reveals that a single viscous central channel in the NPC acts as the sole pathway for passive diffusion of various small molecules; transport receptors and their cargo complexes take distinct transport routes in the periphery, which is occluded by phenylalanine-glycine filaments. Furthermore, the passive and facilitated passageways in the NPC are closely correlated, and their conformations can be simultaneously regulated by Importin 1 (a major transport receptor) and RanGTP (a critical regulator of transport directionality). These results strongly favor a self-regulated viscous channel configuration in native NPCs over the porous hydrogel meshwork model.

Dr. Goler will also present the Emory Friends of Dance Lecture on February 7 at 7:30pm, discussing the contemplative artistry of Dianne McIntyre.

Veta Goler is Division Coordinator for Arts and Humanities and Associate Professor of Dance at Spelman College. After working as a modern dance artist and dance historian—choreographing, performing, and presenting her research (on contemporary African American women modern dance choreographers), nationally and internationally—and publishing in several journals and anthologies, she has shifted her research interests to explorations of contemplative practices in education and the workplace. She is a national Circle of Trust® Approach facilitator, and leads retreats, workshops, and other activities based in the work of education innovator Parker J. Palmer.

In the natural world, complex behaviors such as learning, aggression and sleep are regulated by interconnected networks of genes and their products. Owing to their nontrivial topology and large number of components, most of these networks are poorly understood and consequently, our knowledge of how diverse behaviors arise remains limited. In this talk, I will argue that the fruit fly circadian clock, a biological oscillator that signals to and modulates several key behavioral networks, is an ideal system with which to dissect the fundamental principles that govern organismal behavior. I will discuss recent results from experimental studies at the transcriptional and post-translational levels of the fly clock as well as simple mathematical models aimed at understanding fruit fly locomotion. The talk will end with an outline of future studies using the fly that will provide novel mechanistic insights into how complex behavior emerges from simple molecular events.

What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely.

Held in conjunction with "Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962" at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. On View in the John Howett Works on Paper Gallery from Feb. 4 - May 20, 2012.

It is the special character of works on paper that they are scaled to the human body. Whether it is a woodcut, lithograph, drawing, or a printed book, these media address the body in a different way from painting, sculpture, or cinema. The eleven books and works of art exhibited in Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper, 1890-1962 carry a sense of intimacy that is related to the touch of the hand and to the seated body. Works like Vasily Kandinsky’s woodcut Schwarzer Fleck or Henri Matisse’s illustrated collection, Poèmes de Charles d’Orléans, are not meant to be viewed or read in traditional ways. They solicit many of the feelings associated with the intimacy of reading, but at the same time frustrate any effort to approach them as texts to be read or stories to be told. Rather, we look at these works, we see them, and we respond to them as visual phenomena of a highly sophisticated order. All of the books and works of art in this exhibition are from the permanent collection of Works on Paper at the Michael C. Carlos Museum and Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Books Library of Emory University.

“We Speak with the Left Hemisphere": The Story of Paul Broca’s Discovery that Changed Our Understanding of the Human Brain

ABSTRACT: In 1865, Paul Broca declared “We speak with the left hemisphere.” It would become one of the most important declarations in the history of the neurosciences because it signalled a fundamental change in our understanding of the human brain. The story, or at least small parts of it, is routinely told in books and articles in neuropsychology, neurology, history of psychology, and, increasingly, textbooks in general psychology and brain and behavior, and the terms “Broca’s area,” “Broca’s region,” and “Broca’s aphasia” are among the best known eponyms in medicine and the brain sciences. Many of these accounts, however, are, more or less, pro forma, skipping over some important parts of the story and, in my view, mischaracterizing certain other parts. In this talk, I want to go more deeply into the historical record because the actual story is more interesting (and less straightforward) than the one usually told. I’ll begin with a brief account of Broca’s early life and education and of what led him to study the brain. I’ll then describe the events leading to his discovery of left-hemisphere specialization for speech and discuss how he handled exceptions and how he proposed to explain cerebral lateralization. Finally, have Broca’s hypotheses about localization and lateralization of function proven to be correct? In the last part of my talk, I’ll briefly summarize recent theory and research.

How advances in science are made, and how they may come to benefit mankind at large are complex issues. The discoveries that most influence the way we think about nature seldom can be anticipated, and frequently the applications for new technologies developed to probe a specific characteristic of nature are also not clear, even to the inventors of these technologies. One thing is most clear: Seldom are such advances made by individuals alone. Rather, they result from the progress of the scientific community; asking questions, developing new technologies to answer those questions, and sharing their results and their ideas with others. However, there are indeed research strategies that can substantially increase the probability of one's making a discovery, and the speaker will illustrate some of these strategies in the context of a number of well known discoveries, including the work he did as a graduate student, for which he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1996.

As part of the Halle Speaker Series, Al-Jazeera Washington Bureau Chief Abderrahim Foukara will deliver a public lecture about the Arab Spring at Emory University on February 17.

Dr. James W. Hardin is Associate Professor and Middle Eastern Archaeologist in the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University

The presentation will focus on the reconstruction of household organization in Judah during the Iron II (ca. 8th century BCE). It centers in particular on one
"4-room type house" excavated at Tell Halif in southern Israel by the Lahav Research Project during the summers of 1992, 1993, and 1999. This house was preserved well in a destruction stratum that eclipsed the site at the end of the eighth century BCE. The excellently preserved materials and their meticulous collection, including micro-artifacts, provide an excellent opportunity to examine post-depositional processes, activity area identification and organization, and what these mean for understanding the organization of broader household and its relationship to other spheres in Judahite society. When these data are compared with ethnographic data and historical data (both biblical and extra-biblical) they can be very telling regarding life in the southwest border region of Judah during the years of Assyrian activity in the region.

David Shambaugh is professor of political science and international affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs and director of the China Policy Program at The George Washington University. He is also a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program and Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at The Brookings Institution. As the world’s most important rising power, many wonder: what kind of role will China take on the international stage? In Search of the Creative Brain: Frederic Chopin and George Sand

ABSTRACT: This lecture focuses on the intersection between aesthetics and neuroscience, and draws on research for my book-in-progress, The Graphological Impulse. Relying on “documents” of creative work, textual and musical, that emerged in an unusually productive summer Chopin and Sand spent in the countryside, I present, in a first part, an analysis of the emergence of two artworks in a blend of phenomenological and formal perspectives. The archive I use is, crucially, that of handwritten materials, which enable us to trace a creative process. The simultaneous emergence of two masterpieces of composition in related genres (music and lyrical prose) begs the question of the role played by the environment in this creative process. Capitalizing on the “ecological” explanations current in creativity studies (explanations derived from neuroscience), I offer suggestions as to how recent scientific research on synaesthesia or on unconscious processes, as well as models of brain plasticity, might help us analyze these exceptional creative experiences. Meanwhile, if these can be recast in terms of mind-brain/body, then the question arises of how a material, embodied practice of creation driven by a hand that applies pen to paper participates and intervenes in the short-of-miraculous production of two masterpieces of modern art.
This return to a graphological paradigm opens up, in conclusion, a set of questions about the value of a dialogue between literary/philosophical approaches to the process of composition and those we owe to recent advances in the neurosciences and cognitive sciences.

This lunch session will address the course of Dr. Ender’s engagement with the concept of graphology, bridging some of the topics of her Thursday lecture to focus specifically on implications of the emergent transition from hand-written, manuscript technologies to digital modes of writing and archival expression. This talk will survey several approaches to this transition in contemporary empirical research with the goal of opening up productive new possibilities for encounters between humanistic and scientific perspectives.

Creating an abstract narrative around the loss of communication, he investigates the effects of the abrupt discontinuation of Pittsburgh radio station WAMO on a community, and the lingering effects of Alzheimer's and aphasia on a family. Abraham mixes recordings of classic soul and hip hop with contemporary classical compositions to create an eclectic score that evokes fond memories and a passion for what is lost.

Recent times have witnessed a resurgence of architecture and urban scholarship on the social makings of cities, particularly involving issues of plurality and social inclusivity. Engaging politics and policies, this scholarship has pushed the architectural and aesthetic understanding of space beyond its commonly accepted view as a designed object. Continuing along this critical spatial trajectory, this talk will focus attention on the relationship between space and communication. Specifically, the presentation will juxtapose distinct narratives on Bombay, and bring previously-unrelated perspectives on the city and its spatial practices together in a conversation. By contrasting various expectations, the paper will illustrate the many ways in which the relationship between space and communication at once re-frames questions of voice and
difference, and speaks to multiple urbanisms in Bombay. Throughout, the presentation will explore the notion of communication as a form of action that influences, inspires, and defines practice.

Fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) in the ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis) and near infrared (NIR) regions is a non-invasive methodology and a useful technique for analyzing works of art. In this spectral range, electronic and vibrational transitions can be observed. In the latter case, the transitions are multiple or combinations of transitions that are commonly observed in the mid-IR. FORS is primarily used to identify pigments and dyes, evaluate color and color changes, and to detect product alterations. FORS can also be a very useful tool to inform a sampling strategy: when used in conjunction with imaging spectroscopy, it may aid in the location of micro-sampling areas, while, when extending local data to a broader scale it may help in reducing the extent of micro-sampling. UV-VIS-NIR reflectance spectroscopy is based on the analysis of the radiation diffused by the surface when compared with a highly reflecting reference standard, such as Spectralon® or barium sulfate plates. The reflectance spectrum of the polychrome surface is reported as the percentage of reflected radiation versus the wavelength.

The presented hyper-spectral scanner device operates in the visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) range (400–1000 nm) and is based on a prism-grating-prism line-spectrograph connected to a silicon CCD camera. The characteristics of this scanner are 0.1 mm spatial sampling over a 1 × 1 m2 surface and approximately 1 nm spectral sampling in the wavelength range 400–900 nm. The results provide useful information, in particular for the characterization of pigments and dyes. Furthermore, the acquired images can also be used for colorimetric applications. In addition, application of a principal components analysis (PCA) algorithm to the spectral data, with the pixels as objects and the wavelengths as variables, makes it possible to show areas painted with different materials as statistically uncorrelated images. Results obtained using this hyperspectral scanner on different polychrome surfaces will be discussed.

"Women and Water" is created and performed by Jan Akers, Anna Leo, Lisa Paulsen, Sally Radell, Rosalind Staib, Leslie Taylor, and Lori Teague. Theater and Dance faculty come together for the first time to collaborate and intertwine movement and text around the theme of water. Fueled by storytelling, these creators delve into image-based moments that are personal and extraordinary to convey the impact of various states of water.

Williams, Baker and supporting actress Mildred Dunnock all earned Academy Award nominations, as did Boris Kaufman’s cinematography.

Understanding Biblical Women: The Contributions of Archaeology and Ethnography

In this presentation I will focus on two important sources of information for
reconstructing women’s activities during the Iron Age (ca. 1200-586 BCE):
archaeological remains from households in ancient Israel and Judah and
ethnographic accounts from late 19th-early 20th century Palestine. I will begin by reviewing the accounts of bread baking in the Hebrew Bible; according to the biblical writers, everyday cooking activities in domestic contexts were performed by women, while bread baking in more specialized contexts – like the Jerusalem Temple – was done by men. I will then describe the process of transforming grain into bread during the Iron Age and examine the archaeological correlates for these activities. Ethnographic data, including late 19th-early 20th century photographs and accounts by pilgrims, western anthropologists, and local authors, reveal the gendered aspects of traditional cooking activities; this information will be used to suggest women’s control of bread baking in antiquity. I will conclude by describing how women’s lives may have been impacted by the professionalization of bread production by men in ancient times and in early 20th century Palestine and Transjordan.

The lecture is sponsored by the Program in Mediterranean Archaeology, the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum. The event is free and open to the public.

Held in conjunction with Laura Otis’s and Krish Sathian’s graduate course, “Images, Metaphors, and the Brain,” this symposium will bring together three innovative writers (Jim Grimsley, Salman Rushdie, and Joseph Skibell) with three leading neuroscientists who do cutting-edge research on language (Anjan Chatterjee, Seana Coulson, David Kemmerer). The authors will read from their works and offer insights into the creative processes underlying literary writing, exchanging ideas with the scientists, who will present recent findings on the relevant brain mechanisms.
