DESCRIPTION:The Mind's Eye is an exhibit of Myron McGhee's photographs o
f Tibetan monks painting sand mandalas at Emory University in Atlanta\,
Georgia.\n\nWhile the monks focus their attention on the artistic elemen
ts of creating the sand mandala\, they also devote their minds to medita
tion for the healing of the earth. Observing their sacred practice\, our
eyes are drawn to the exquisite beauty of their art\, and our minds are
inspired by their religious devotion.\n\nThis collection of photographs
will be on exhibit at various venues on Emory's campus throughout the 2
011-2012 academic year. The exhibit is curated by Juana Clem McGhee and
made possible through generous support from the university and other org
anizations in the Atlanta area.\n \nTo view exhibits online\, go to http

DESCRIPTION:<strong>Contemporary Mandala:\nNew Audiences\, New Forms\nJa
 nuary 21–April 15\, 2012\n\nEmory Visual Arts Gallery</strong>\n\nPlanne
d in consultation with Jacquelynn Baas\, author of Smile of the Buddha:
Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today\, this exhibit br
ings together contemporary artists who explore the mandala form as artis
tic expression and as a tool for transformation and balance in our compl
ex world. This exploration takes many forms\, from redrafting tradition
al visual depictions to the use of new materials\, to the performance bo
dy participating in the mandala form. \n\nA mandala by New York artist
and Morehouse College alumnus Sanford Biggers forms the centerpiece of t
he gallery\, providing a dynamic space for music and dance. Surrounding
this performance space are the works of artists Don Cooper\, Faith McCl
 ure\, Christopher McNulty\, Andra Samelson\, King Thackston\, and Marcia
Vaitsman. From transcendent abstracts to repetitive patterns\, the mult
i-media works by these artists use the mandala and its residual power to
  address today’s physical\, cultural\, environmental\, and cosmological
 issues.

on\, resistance and regime change that spurred a tumultuous year across
the Arab world. Now\, armed with new media\, fresh and vibrant voices ar
e emerging all across the region to challenge old political control and
some cultural traditions. What is often called the “cradle of civilizati
on” is in a state of change.\n\nIs this truly an Arab Spring? Revolution
s can be hijacked\, crushed or abandoned. Where are the uprisings today
and where will they go from here? Who are the new power brokers? What is
the role of the Islamists\, women and social media? Are the nations in
transition any closer to stability\, democracy and freedom?\n\nFrom the
front lines of the Arab uprisings\, experts will come together to explor

 t Mandalas.</i>\nFor the casual observer\, a mandala appears to be a bea
utiful\, geometrical design\, but for the practitioner of Buddhist tantr
a\, the mandala is a bridge to an alternative reality in which the wondr
ous qualities of enlightenment are literally embodied. Drawing on tradit
ional Buddhist theories and current work on the nature of human cognitio
n\, this talk presents the central features of tantric meditation on man
dalas along with its connection to the transformation of mind and body.

SUMMARY:Scholar’s Seminar on Modernism
LOCATION:Reception Hall\, Michael C. Carlos Museum\, 571 South Kilgo Circ

DESCRIPTION:What was Modernism? Was it a style\, an ideal\, a politics\,
a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central conc
 epts like authorship\, realism\, truth\, teleology\, medium specificity
\, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in declin
e\, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what
its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (
and for the best)\, or whether its death was announced prematurely.\n\nD
iscussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA)\, Todd Cronan (Emory)\, Lisa Florman
(Ohio State)\, Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory)\, Sarah Hamill (Oberlin)\,
Gordon Hughes (Rice)\, Dalia Judowitz (Emory)\, Andrew Mitchell (Emory)
\, Charles Palermo (William and Mary)\, Michael Schreyach (Trinity)\, and
others.\n\nSeminar discussion will revolve around pre-circulated papers
. If you would like to take part in the seminar discussion\, please cont
act Todd Cronan in advance of the event at <a href="mailto:todd.cronan@e
 mory.edu">todd.cronan@emory.edu</a>\n\nHeld in conjunction with "Embodie
d Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper\, 1890-1962" at the Michael C. Carlos
Museum. On View in the John Howett Works on Paper Gallery from Feb. 4 -
May 20\, 2012.\n\nIt is the special character of works on paper that th
ey are scaled to the human body. Whether it is a woodcut\, lithograph\,
drawing\, or a printed book\, these media address the body in a differen
t way from painting\, sculpture\, or cinema. The eleven books and works
of art exhibited in Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper\, 1890-196
2 carry a sense of intimacy that is related to the touch of the hand and
to the seated body. Works like Vasily Kandinsky’s woodcut Schwarzer Fl
eck or Henri Matisse’s illustrated collection\, Poèmes de Charles d’Orlé
ans\, are not meant to be viewed or read in traditional ways. They solic
it many of the feelings associated with the intimacy of reading\, but at
the same time frustrate any effort to approach them as texts to be read
or stories to be told. Rather\, we look at these works\, we see them\,
and we respond to them as visual phenomena of a highly sophisticated ord
er. All of the books and works of art in this exhibition are from the p
ermanent collection of Works on Paper at the Michael C. Carlos Museum a
nd Manuscript\, Archives\, and Rare Books Library of Emory University.
