DESCRIPTION:New Portico Gallery Opens with Presentation of Sculpture and
Selections from an Important Promised Gift of Meissen Porcelain from He
nry H. Arnhold: <i>White Gold: Highlights from the Arnhold Collection of
Meissen Porcelain</i>\n\nOn December 13\, visitors to The Frick Collect
ion will be able to enjoy a new gallery — the first major addition to th
e museum's display spaces in nearly thirty-five years. The inspiration f
or this initiative\, which involves the enclosure of the portico in the
Fifth Avenue Garden\, comes from the intention of museum founder Henry C
lay Frick (1849–1919) to build an addition to his 1914 mansion for his g
rowing Collection of sculpture. The project was postponed in 1917 follow
ing the United States entry into World War I\, and Mr. Frick died before
it could be resumed. In recent years\, the institution has placed great
er focus on sculpture through critically acclaimed exhibitions and sever
al key acquisitions\, while also evaluating the effectiveness of the dis
play and lighting of such objects. Another area of increased focus has b
een the decorative arts. When talks began with renowned porcelain collec
tor Henry H. Arnhold about a promised gift\, the idea to create a galler
y both for sculpture and the decorative arts was revisited. The architec
ture firm Aedas developed a plan to integrate the outdoor garden portico
into the fabric of the museum\, and groundbreaking occurred last winter
. Aedas\, formerly known as Davis Brody Bond Aedas\, is one of the leadi
ng practices in the United States engaged in a range of museum and landm
ark structure commissions.\n\nThe Portico Gallery for Decorative Arts an
d Sculpture opens in late December with an inaugural exhibition of works
drawn from Henry Arnhold's promised gift of 131 examples of Meissen por
celain from the early years of this Royal Manufactory's production. On v
iew through April 29\, 2012\, White Gold: Highlights from the Arnhold Co
llection of Meissen Porcelain will feature approximately seventy of thes
e objects\, presented along with a group of eighteenth-century sculpture
s by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1740–1828). Among the latter works is the full
-length terracotta Diana the Huntress\, a signature work at the Frick th
at returns to view having been recently cleaned and treated. It finds a
permanent home in the new portico gallery\, while the ongoing display of
other sculptures and ceramics will rotate periodically.

DESCRIPTION:In early 2012\, The Frick Collection will present an exhibit
ion of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir\, of
fering the first comprehensive study of the artist's engagement with the
full-length format\, which was associated with the official Paris Salon
in the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist a
esthetic. The project was inspired by La Promenade of 1875–76\, the most
significant Impressionist work in the Fricks permanent collection. It e
xplores Renoir's portraits and subject pictures of this type from the mi
d-1870s to mid-1880s. Intended for public display\, these vertical grand
-scale canvases are among the artist's most daring and ambitious present
ations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of
Impressionism. On view only at the Frick\, this is a landmark exhibitio
n\, bringing together\, with the Frick painting\, several beloved master
pieces from around the world. Works on loan from international instituti
 ons are La Parisienne (1874) from the National Museum of Art\, Cardiff\;
The Umbrellas (c. 1881 and 1885) from The National Gallery\, London (fi
rst time since 1886 on view in the United States)\; and Dance in the Cit
y and Dance in the Country (1882–83) from the Musée d'Orsay\, Paris. Wor
ks on loan from American institutions are The Dancer (1874) from the Nat
ional Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\; Madame Henriot "en travesti"
(1875–76) from the Columbus Museum of Art\; Acrobats at the Cirque Ferna
ndo (1879) from the Art Institute of Chicago\; and Dance at Bougival (18
82–83) from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. The exhibition will be sho
wn in the Frick's East Gallery. The exhibition is being organized by Col
in B. Bailey\, the Frick's Associate Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief
 Curator.

DESCRIPTION:This is the first monographic exhibition in the United State
s dedicated to Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi\, known as Antico (c. 1455–1528).
As sculptor to the Gonzaga courts at Mantua and in northern Italy\, Anti
co earned his name\, "the antique one\," for his creation in the classic
al style of statuettes\, reliefs\, and busts that are distinguished by t
heir opulence and beauty. Using inventive and highly refined techniques
\, Antico lavishly gilded\, silvered\, and patinated his works\, elevatin
g his bronze sculptures to the status of the ancient precious objects th
at were avidly collected by his Gonzaga patrons. Splendid and timeless\,
Antico's works represent a sophisticated court style and have always be
en exclusive and rare. Today fewer than fifty of his bronzes are known.
Dispersed among museums in Europe and America\, almost thirty-five of th
em will come together in this unprecedented presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Between 1440 and 1457 Francesco Pesellino painted for the Me
dici family and Pope Nicholas V\, quickly earning himself a remarkable r
eputation in Florence. He died young\, however\, leaving behind few docu
mented works. Rediscovered at the turn of the twentieth century and cham
pioned by connoisseurs such as Bernard Berenson\, his jewel-like paintin
 gs fetched exceptional prices\, including a record-breaking £10\,000 in
1896 for his masterpiece\, the <I>Battle and Triumph of David (1452–55)<
/I>. This lecture will explore Pesellino’s fascinating career and proble
matic rediscovery\, revealing his pioneering role in the development of
spalliera paintings\, a new genre of Renaissance art.\n\nImage credit:

DESCRIPTION:Antico was sculptor to the Gonzaga\, rulers of the principal
ity of Mantua in Northern Italy. His gilded bronzes in the ancient style
express the aspirations of a court renowned for its splendid revival of
antiquity. This seminar will examine the Gonzagas’s collecting practic
es and patronage of artists\, including Andrea Mantegna\, to provide a c
ontext for Antico’s achievements. Through close study of the objects on
view in Antico: The Golden Age of Renaissance Bronzes\, participants wil

DESCRIPTION:Johann Christian Neuber was one of Dresden’s most famous gol
dsmiths. Sometime before 1775 he was named court jeweler to Friedrich Au
gustus III\, elector of Saxony\, and in 1785 he was appointed Inspector
of the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault)\, the magnificent royal collection o
f Augustus the Strong\, the founder of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory
. For more than thirty years\, Neuber created small gold boxes\, chatela
ines\, and watchcases decorated with local semiprecious stones such as a
gate\, jasper\, and carnelian. He fashioned enchanting landscapes\, comp
lex floral designs\, and geometric patterns with tiny cut stones\, often
incorporating Meissen porcelain plaques\, cameos\, and miniatures. Thes
e one-of-a-kind objects\, which reflect the Saxon court’s interest in bo
th luxury items and the natural sciences\, remain prized treasures today
\, but have never before been shown together in a monographic exhibition
 .
