She heads the Save-University Partnership for Education Research (SUPER), a program that brings university-based researchers together with Save the Children and partner NGO field staff to collaborate on research projects of mutual interest. Over six years, this initiative has produced more than 50 studies whose evidence has strengthened advocacy and/or practice in 22 countries. In this presentation, Dr. Dowd will review both evidence that ignited the development of Literacy Boost and that which contributed to its shape. She will also show results that extend what we know about children’s reading development and pose new questions that this evidence-based system is raising.

Cosponsored by the Weatherhead Center For International Affairs and the Committee on African Studies, Harvard University

Type of Event: Presentation
Building/Room: Other
Contact Name: Bethany Mulimbi
Contact Email: bethany_mulimbi@mail.harvard.edu
Contact Phone: 617-406-9695
Sponsoring Organization/Department: Harvard Africa Research Seminar
Registration Required: No
Gazette Classification: Education

Bringing King to China

Land Hall, Belfer Building, Harvard Kennedy School, 4th floor, 79 JFK Street, Cambridge
Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 6 – 8:30pm

A discussion with Director Kevin McKiernan moderated by Anthony Saich will follow the screening. Refreshments provided.

"Bringing King to China" is about a young American woman struggling to bring Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of nonviolence to China, and then back to the United States. Believing in the universality of King's ideals, Caitrin McKiernan decides to produce a play in China about King, in collaboration with the National Theater of China. With the U.S. deeply embroiled in wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, she not only wants to show that there is a different side to America, but also to use King's ideas on nonviolence to build a bridge between the U.S. and China.

Gazette Classification: Film, Social Sciences
Organization/Sponsor: Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation
Directed By: Kevin McKiernan
Cost: Free
Contact Info: Melissa D'Anello: melissa_danello@hks.harvard.edu, 617.496.1715
More info: www.ash.harvard.edu…

Urbanism vs. Communism? Popular Culture Reform in Early PRC Shanghai

Shanghai was faced with a rural-based revolutionary force that vowed to purge the city’s popular culture of all its bourgeois elements. She reported out of Iran for nearly two decades until 2009 when she was forced to leave the country because of government threats against her. She has written for the New York Times, Time magazine, Agence FrancePresse, the New York Review of Books, Foreign Policy, Nieman Reports, and the online publication, openDemocracy. She has been a guest speaker on CNN, BBC, CBC, and NPR. A Nieman Fellow in 2010–11, she is currently a Shorenstein Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Fathi will discuss covering Iran (her home country) for the outside world in The New York Times, which she did for ten years. She stayed through the elections and the protests, but in the end, targeted by police, under surveillance, and threatened with assassination if she continued reporting, she fled the country. She'll also address writing on deadline about events of global importance, writing cross-culturally, constructing news stories under personal and political pressure (what kind of stories became most important, how she chose to tell them, etc.), and working in her new role as a writer in exile.

Gazette Classification: Education, Humanities, Law, Poetry/Prose, Religion, Social Sciences
Organization/Sponsor: Co-sponsored by the Harvard College Writing Program, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism, the Harvard Extension School Master’s Degree Program in Journalism, Harvard Review, and the Program in General Education
Speaker(s): Nazila Fathi, Shorenstein Fellow
Cost: Free and open to the public

American Repertory Theater, Loeb Drama Center
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 7:30 – 9pm

Wild Swans is a world premiere stage adaptation of Jung Chang’s astonishing personal memoir and international bestseller. It takes us on a journey from the early days of Communist hope and struggle, through the chaos and confusion of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, to the birth of a superpower. The epic production uses original music, film, puppetry, and dynamic video design. The ensemble of British and American actors of Asian descent includes actress Katie Leung, best known as Harry Potter’s girlfriend Cho Chang in the film series, playing Er-Hong, the character based on Jung Chang. This gut-wrenching story of one family's struggle through ever changing political and social conditions raises questions about how far we are willing to go to protect our family and our principles. heck website for specific performance dates and times.

Gazette Classification: Theater
Organization/Sponsor: American Repertory Theater
Directed By: Sacha Wares
Written By: Jung Chang, adapted by Alexandra Wood
Cost: $25 and up
Ticket Web Link: www.americanrepertorytheater.org…
Ticket Info: 617.547.8300
More info: www.americanrepertorytheater.org…

Acoustica Electronica

OBERON
2 Arrow Street, Cambridge
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 9pm – 12am

AcousticaElectronica blends the virtuosity found in the classical concert hall with the infectious energy of the late-night dance club. The best of both worlds: artistic depth and irresistible appeal. It is sexy and classy, sensuous and stoic, irreverent and reverential. Bach meets a dance club back-beat, Chopin meets trance, Carmen’s habanera and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata are blended with house music for a listening experience unlike anything you have ever heard before. Live musicians perform with The WIG, a classically trained, New York based DJ. Professional dancers reinvent the typical "go-go" dancer, blending ballet, jazz, modern and improvised movement. Aerialists fly above the audience as if Cirque du Soleil met a rave. A classical world becomes the technicolor world of the dance club as the audience escapes from their real lives to experience a night of dream, abandon, and ecstasy...

Gazette Classification: Theater
Organization/Sponsor: OBERON
Cost: $20 dance floor; $50 VIP table seat
Ticket Web Link: www.cluboberon.com
Contact Info: 617.496.8004
More info: www.cluboberon.com
