Travelogue: Namibia, a Journey Through Spectacular Landscapes

Join us as we explore Namibia’s great mountains of sand, windswept gravel plains, uninterrupted landscapes, and ephemeral water sources in search of wildlife and remote cultures.

We will visit the fragile, pristine Skeleton Coast. To walk along its lonely beaches scattered with whalebones, shipwrecks, and enormous seal colonies is truly a humbling experience. The Namib Desert, Damaraland, Etosha, and Kunene regions will also be highlighted.

Safari and self-driving opportunities will be presented along with ways to experience Namibia’s wild and desolate areas where guest numbers are restricted. We will also discuss itineraries that might include the neighboring countries of Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Your program presenter, Erica Varga, has guided guests from around the globe on overland safaris in southern Africa. She currently owns and operates acappella safaris, which offers customized safari planning services that result in life enhancing journeys.

In addition to serving as the first Executive Director of the Bloedel Reserve, he photographed its plants and those of gardens in other countries. He is well “rooted” in our region having served on the Boards of Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden, North Kitsap High School Vocational Horticulture Advisory Board, Northwest Horticultural Society (past President), and the Bainbridge Island Land Trust (a founding member & Past President). Semi-retired, he presently serves as the Executive Director of the the Elisabeth Miller Botanical Garden Trust and the Elisabeth C. & Pendleton Miller Charitable Trust.

Teresa Barnet will be regaling us with her real-life adventures. She will also be sharing tips on what you should bring with you on your next adventure into the "wilds" and what to do if you become lost. Ms. Barnet has volunteered with the Kitsap Search and Rescue team for eight years and is also a retired U.S. Navy medic (28 years of service). She will be accompanied by her K-9 SAR dog, Popeye.
