nal staged readings of four original plays. \nThe fourth annual Arkansas
New Play Fest is the second annual partnership between Arkansas Reperto
 ry Theatre\, Arkansas’s largest professional non-profit theatre\, and Th
eatreSquared\, Arkansas’s regional theatre in Northwest Arkansas. The co
llaboration is designed to introduce promising new works for the stage t

eatured plays:</b>\nUPROOTED\nby Clinnesha Dillon Sibley\n\nA richly dra
wn treatment of a timeless scenario by an award-winning Arkansas playwri
ght. What happens when long-separated siblings reunite after the death o
f a parent? When successful film actress Venus Kettle returns to Indiano
la\, Mississippi\, to her mother's "home going\," she is greeted by her
sisters with a wide range of emotions\, from enthusiastic glee to cold-s
houlder resentment. In the meantime the play follows the parallel story
of Venus's brother\, who is incarcerated in a facility in Pine Bluff\, A
rkansas. Uprooted is moving tribute to the redemptive power of family.
 \n\nTHE FOOTBALL PROJECT \nby Samuel Brett Williams\n\nNovember\, 1998:
a high school football team boarded a bus to travel to play in the state
championship game. The entire town came out to see the team off—but the
bus never left. One third-string player who played for mere seconds in
the previous game forged his grades and caused the team to be disqualif
ied from the championship. The town's response was unprecedented. There
were death threats\, thoughts of suicide\, vandalism and then a surprisi
ng amount of goodwill and even a bit of unexpected heroism. A snapshot o
f a town in crisis\, examining one of the rare places that the ordinary
and the epic\, the petty and the profound collide: high school football.
 \n\nTHE SPIRITUALIST\nby Robert Ford\n\nTheatreSquared Artistic Director
Robert Ford brings The Spiritualist back to the Arkansas New Play Festi
val for a second year of development\, adding new revisions and\, for th
e first time\, original music. Inspired by true events\, this comedic dr
ama introduces Rosemary Dunn\, an English widow who cooks for the school
lunch service and communes with the spirits of dead composers. When an
enterprising American reporter tries to unmask the self-proclaimed psych
ic as a fraud\, he finds there may be more at play than simple musical s
leight-of-hand. \n\nTHE BALLAD OF RUSTY AND ROY\nby Troy and Jonny Schre
mmer\n\nThis new play with live\, original music\, follows the story of
two half-brothers\, both musicians with roots in Texas who have found th
eir way to New York City along starkly divergent paths. One has an enthu
siastic following on the New York music scene\, the other among toddlers
at the neighborhood church playgroup where he works. Circumstances reun
ite the two brothers\, but a deeply troubled past involving a boyhood ro
ad trip threatens to tear them apart once again. Featuring songs – and p
erformances – by Dusty Brown\, who himself has a burgeoning career as a
singer-songwriter in New York\, an early version of The Ballad of Rusty
and Roy was featured at the New York Fringe Festival.\n\n<b>Sponsors:</b
 >\nOxford American \nTheatreSquared of Northwest Arkansas\n\n<b>Tickets:

ings. Call The Rep Box Office to purchase tickets at (501) 378-0405 or o

DESCRIPTION:“In the spring\, at the end of the day\, you should smell li
ke dirt.” Margaret Atwood\n\nThe Faulkner County Library announces the
Arkansas premiere of the film The Garden Summer. As the library kicks of
f its Sustainability month\, we are proud to showcase this new film by H
ailey Wist.\n\nThe film follows Wist on a journey to rural Arkansas in t
he summer of 2010 to trade a life of suburban comfort for a life without
microwaves or supermarkets. Her goal was to plant a garden\, invite som
e like-minded people to help\, and eat only what they grew or sourced fr
om a 100-mile radius. The project was inspired by a lecture Wist heard o
ne night in November 2009 at Georgetown University. It centered on Rober
t Putnam's theory of social capital\, which basically says that when eve
rybody is giving to each other\, they don't have to rely so much on larg
er institutions. \n\nHer family happens to own a farm in Greenbrier and
it was the perfect site for the kind of social experiment she had in min
 d. She and four companions spent the summer growing herbs\, fruits and v
egetables\, selling any surplus at the Argenta Farmer’s Market. On avera
ge\, they made about $150\, which Wist says could feed the five of them
for an entire week. "That was one of the biggest shocks to me. And we di
d it easily. Sometimes we even had money left over."\n\nEven with their
humble earnings\, the group was still able to regularly prepare meals wi
th elk\, buffalo\, and duck\, not to mention all the fresh vegetables an
d grains. \n\nThe Garden Summer is a celebration of the garden\, the ear
th and our own beautiful corner of it.\n\nAll library events are free an
d open to the public. For more information\, call the library at 501-32

DESCRIPTION:The Faulkner County Library will show the film Food\, Inc. o
n May 22 at 7 pm as part of its celebration of local food and sustainabi
lity.\n\nIn Food\, Inc.\, filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our
nation's food industry\, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that
has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our gover
nment's regulatory agencies\, USDA and FDA. \n\nOur nation's food supply
is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ah
ead of consumer health\, the livelihood of the American farmer\, the saf
ety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens
\, the perfect pork chop\, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds\, even toma
toes that won't go bad\, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the har
mful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73\,000 Americans ann
ually. We are riddled with widespread obesity\, particularly among child
ren\, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.\n\nFeaturing inter
views with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation)\, Michael P
ollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma\, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gar
y Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin\, Food\, Inc. reveals surpr
 ising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat\, how it's produced\,
who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.\n\nAll
library events are free and open to the public. For more information\,

DESCRIPTION:The Faulkner County Library and the Faulkner County Museum h
ave partnered to win a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage to
celebrate Arkansas Heritage Month. We are creating a film to document
the oral histories of Faulkner County citizens from the middle of the la

agrarian to a high-tech work force\, while celebrating the universal val

DESCRIPTION:THE GREENHORNS\n\nOn Tues. June 12\, the Faulkner County Lib
rary continues to explore sustainability with the film THE GREENHORNS at
  7 pm. \n\nArmed with a camcorder\, farmer-filmmaker-activist Severine v
on Tscharner Fleming spent two years crisscrossing America\, meeting and
mobilizing a network of revolutionary young farmers resettling the land
. 'The Greenhorns' is an ode to their grit and entrepreneurial spirit\,
an exploration of sustainable agriculture\, and an enticement to reclaim
our national soil. The ninety minute feature is the culmination of well
over 200 hours of original footage from all regions of the United State
s\, as well as original animation by young urban farmer and artist Brook
e Budner\, and rare agricultural archival footage from the Prelinger Arc
hives. Ultimately\, The Greenhorns shows us how farmers can move out of
the margins recent history has consigned them to\, and back to the heart
of the American food landscape. \n\nCody Hopkins of Falling Sky Farm an
d Conway Locally Grown will be on hand to discuss the growing young farm
ers movement.\n\nAll library events are free and open to the public. Fo
r more information\, call the library at 501-327-7482 or email Nancy@fcl

DESCRIPTION:As part of the on-going Sustainability month\, the Faulkner
County Library will host a screening of the documentary film SEED SWAP o
n June 14 at 7 pm.\n\nThe documentary is a production of Dr. Brian Campb
ell of UCA\, and is directed by Zachariah McCannon.\n\nThe film uses the
development of a seed exchange and agricultural biodiversity conservati
on project in the Ozark Mountains as an ethnographic lens to explore the
seed saving subculture of the region.\n\n"SEED SWAP is a valuable docum
entation of how informal seed networks in Arkansas serve as powerful cou
nter-narratives and everyday resistances against the hegemony of US agri
-business as usual. And the old-time Ozark music is fantastic! Kudos to
Dr. Brian Campbell and everyone involved in making this film and thank y
ou to all the cantankerous and wonderful seed savers who are keeping our
