The 2012 Red Rock Canyon Art Contest will be hosted by the Bureau of Land Management, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, and Friends of Red Rock Canyon. This is open to all Southern Nevada Kindergarten through 12th grade students. All art must represent native Wildlife of Red Rock Canyon and the Mojave Desert.

The purpose of the art representing Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or the Mojave Desert is to make students research and learn more about the desert they call home. There are two categories: 1) Black and White, and 2) Colored. There will be a 1st place winner for each grade in each category. There will be one best of show for grades K-5, one best of show for grades 6-8, and one best of show for grades 9-12.

NOTE:
1) Students missing ANY information on the Mojave Facts sheet WILL be DISQUALIFIED.
2) Artwork with glass in the frame will not be accepted as many have been broken in the past.
3) Artwork does not have to be done in class; possibly offer this as an extra credit project, part of a club activity, or simply encourage your students to participate.
4) Awards Ceremony will be April 14, 2012 from 10am to 11am at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center. Winning students and their teachers will be notified before spring break.
5) Mojave Facts for grades 6-12: Must have two (2) paragraphs telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.
6) Mojave Facts for Grades 3-5: Must have one (1) paragraph telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.
7) Mojave Facts for Grades K-2: Must have two to four (2-4) sentences telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.

Maya - A Thirty Year Retrospective: Photographs by Michael Plyler
January 13 – April 2, 2012
Michael Plyler, a UNLV alumnus (class of 1977), presents a thirty year retrospective of his photographs of the Maya of Guatemala at the Barrick Museum on campus from January 13 - April 2, 2012. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians, as seen through the lens of Michael Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty and resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to his photography, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the subtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress, or traje. Mayan culture predates Rome by almost 1,000 years and has endured roughly six times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero, had the most advanced writing system in the western hemisphere, and claim numerous astronomical achievements. Today's Maya are acclaimed as some of the finest weavers in the world.

An opening reception will be held at 5:30pm on January 26th, followed by a UNLV Forum lecture by the artist in the museum’s auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.

The 2012 Red Rock Canyon Art Contest will be hosted by the Bureau of Land Management, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, and Friends of Red Rock Canyon. This is open to all Southern Nevada Kindergarten through 12th grade students. All art must represent native Wildlife of Red Rock Canyon and the Mojave Desert.

The purpose of the art representing Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or the Mojave Desert is to make students research and learn more about the desert they call home. There are two categories: 1) Black and White, and 2) Colored. There will be a 1st place winner for each grade in each category. There will be one best of show for grades K-5, one best of show for grades 6-8, and one best of show for grades 9-12.

NOTE:
1) Students missing ANY information on the Mojave Facts sheet WILL be DISQUALIFIED.
2) Artwork with glass in the frame will not be accepted as many have been broken in the past.
3) Artwork does not have to be done in class; possibly offer this as an extra credit project, part of a club activity, or simply encourage your students to participate.
4) Awards Ceremony will be April 14, 2012 from 10am to 11am at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center. Winning students and their teachers will be notified before spring break.
5) Mojave Facts for grades 6-12: Must have two (2) paragraphs telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.
6) Mojave Facts for Grades 3-5: Must have one (1) paragraph telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.
7) Mojave Facts for Grades K-2: Must have two to four (2-4) sentences telling about the wildlife in your art work. Include information about the subject of your artwork; do not include information about the medium used.
8) Artwork is due no later than March 16, 2012 by 4:00pm at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Administration Building.
9) Winning art will be put on display at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, and will be available for pick-up before the end of the school year.

Michael Plyler, a UNLV alumnus (class of 1977), presents a thirty year retrospective of his photographs of the Maya of Guatemala at the Barrick Museum on campus from January 13 - April 2, 2012. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians, as seen through the lens of Michael Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty and resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to his photography, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the subtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress, or traje. Mayan culture predates Rome by almost 1,000 years and has endured roughly six times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero, had the most advanced writing system in the western hemisphere, and claim numerous astronomical achievements. Today's Maya are acclaimed as some of the finest weavers in the world.

An opening reception will be held at 5:30pm on January 26th, followed by a UNLV Forum lecture by the artist in the museum’s auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.

Maya - A Thirty Year Retrospective: Photographs by Michael Plyler
January 13 – April 2, 2012
Michael Plyler, a UNLV alumnus (class of 1977), presents a thirty year retrospective of his photographs of the Maya of Guatemala at the Barrick Museum on campus from January 13 - April 2, 2012. Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians, as seen through the lens of Michael Plyler’s camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty and resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to his photography, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. Over the course of years his portraits record the subtle changes and diminishment of the traditional dress, or traje. Mayan culture predates Rome by almost 1,000 years and has endured roughly six times as long. They pioneered the concept of zero, had the most advanced writing system in the western hemisphere, and claim numerous astronomical achievements. Today's Maya are acclaimed as some of the finest weavers in the world.

An opening reception will be held at 5:30pm on January 26th, followed by a UNLV Forum lecture by the artist in the museum’s auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.
