DESCRIPTION:The aim of this meeting is to share good practice with regar
d to ways in which students can be encouraged to take ownership of their
learning and how students can learn by working with their peers. \n\nTh
ere is evidence which suggests that students’ learning can be more effec
tive when there is peer to peer interaction. Several peer-assisted learn
ing techniques will be showcased and their effectiveness will be discuss
ed in terms of the benefits to both the learners and also to their mento
rs. The workshop will also cover examples of student generated content s
uch as the development of MCQ assessments and the writing of lab practic
als. The invited speakers aim to give attendees the benefit of their ex
perience of institutional and departmental programmes\, and the student
perspective will also be included. There will be opportunity for discuss
ion with practitioners.\n\nAll interested people are welcome\, though pr
e-booking is essential\, including please information on any special die
 tary arrangements. Please email marion.birch@manchester.ac.uk . \n\nThe
re is no charge for those in HE due to the generous support of the HE Ac

DESCRIPTION:Discussions about the influence of human activities on clima
te usually either focus on projections of climate change based on comple
x climate models\, or on instrumental records and reconstruction of past
climates from proxy data (e.g. gases trapped in ice cores\, tree rings
\, etc). \n\nThis situation is somewhat unfortunate because it might then
seem that anthropogenic forcing of climate is a topic that can only be
understood by climate modellers\, experts in the interpretation of proxy
data\, and statisticians who have the tools to analyse climatic time se
ries.\n\nIn this talk\, building upon a recent Discussion Paper publishe
d by the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London\, I will take a v
ery different perspective on the matter. \n\nThe essential idea is that
\, instead of just debating climate model projections or time series anal
ysis\, it is useful also to reflect on the magnitude of the forcing of c
limate change due to human activities - a forcing which is well understo
od and solidly rooted in physics. \n\nTo do so\, I will provide simple “
back-of-the-envelope” calculations to put the relevant numbers into pers
pective\, with a particular focus on the role played by the ocean circul
 ation. \n\nTea/Coffee from 18:00

DESCRIPTION:Many plasma and ion associated processes\, require a vacuum
environment before process gas is admitted. \n\nThe degree or range of v
acuum depends on the production process and often affects the resulting
product.\n\nContamination and cleanliness are becoming more and more imp
ortant issues within industrial processes to avoid rejects and ensure ma
ximum yield.\n\nThis meeting will attempt to cover the wide spectrum of
industries that require plasma and vacuum processing and the importance
and requirements of vacuum for manufacturing success.\n\nThe industries
that could benefit from this meeting include:\n\nAutomotive and Aeronaut
ical Industries\, Surface Coatings and Surface Engineering companies\, t
he Chemical Industry\, Food\, Medical and Textile suppliers\, the Pharm
aceutical and Semiconductor Industries\, Surface Analysis Instrument sup
pliers and users\, Heat Treatment Companies and Waste Disposal firms.\n
\nThe speakers of a selected number of these topics will explain the impo
rtance of vacuum and or plasmas in their industry.
