After Darkness, I Hope for Light

Light evokes many fascinating thoughts, and holds endless interpretations. It is with light that we are able to see; light illuminates our world and allows life to exist. All of the artists in this exhibition are using light as the primary element in their pieces. They provide us with a new forum for discussion by allowing the audience to supply their own associations. With the diversity of light based work being created by artists like Heather Ackroyd, Dan Harvey, and Jim Campbell, we are presented with a seemingly infinite playing field of perception. There is a broad sense of how light can be used, and various subjects that light, as a medium, tackles.

Exhibitions at the college are free and open to the public. The Godine Family Gallery is located in the North Building, 621 Huntington Avenue, Boston.

MassArt's Film/Video department has put together a week long gallery show of majors' work, with screenings throughout the week. Come see into the minds of Film/Video majors - props, costumes, storyboards, projections, looped media, experimental, narrative films and more!

Walk through the gallery space and join us at the reception on Tuesday, February 7th from 7-11pm; head over to Pozen from 8-10pm for a sit-down screening of further work.

Sophomore majors will have a 1-hour screening in Pozen on Monday, February 6 at 7pm as part of the department show

The Garden Lab is an experimental project for the 2012 spring semester in the Brant Gallery. The aim for this initiative is to create a garden space and platform where all students and the community-at-large can engage in an open conversation about art, design, food, community, and the environment. The project examines these topics and concerns in experimental and investigative ways, while proposing creative and sustainable solutions and possibilities.

This project is supported in part by Sustainable MassArt: Art and Design at the Intersection of the Environment, Social Justice, and Health, the Studio Foundation Sustainability Committee, Artists in Context and Center for the Art and Community Partnerships.

Illustration Department Senior Thesis Exhibit

Thirty-six seniors are included in this year's annual exhibit. Each student has investigated a topic of his/her choice to produce a body of work, including an artist book graphic summary of his/her thesis journey. This year topics cover a wide range--serious, playful, personal, and political-- for example: 'The Journey,' a personal cancer survivor narrative; 'Hush,' the suicide of a loved one; and 'Deforestation,' an investigation of the Amazon.

The opening reception is Wednesday, February 8, from 6 - 8 pm.

The artists and designers in this exhibition build sculptures and site-specific installations that challenge us to see our constructed world anew. Our relationship to buildings is often taken for granted, but the works in this exhibition – whether an abstracted abbey ceiling tilted on its side or an elevated evocation of a city street – reveal overlooked and sometimes hidden features of the architectural spaces in which we live and work.

This exhibition was curated by Lisa Tung, Director of Curatorial Programs.

Binh Danh, Paula Hayes, Tim Knowles, & Workingman Collective

This exhibition explores the intersections between people and the natural environment; delving into the complexity of humanity’s relationships with the landscape through the work of contemporary artists who use living plants in their art. Rather than simply drawing inspiration from the biosphere, these artists utilize plant matter as their artistic media, incorporate natural growth processes to create striking images, employ plants with pollutant-eliminating abilities in interactive sculptures to create healthy social spaces, and even embrace plants as active collaborators in their work.

This exhibition was curated by Lisa Tung, Director of Curatorial Programs.

August to June: Bringing Life to School - Film Screening & Panel Discussion with Filmmaker

August to June is a 90 minute documentary that chronicles a year in an unconventional public school classroom in California. Filmmakers Tom & Amy Valens are currently spending a year filming at the Mission Hill School in Roxbury, which was founded by renowned educator Deborah Meier in 1997. Their new film, The Freedom to Teach, will offer a rare positive portrayal of an urban public school. This exhibition explores the intersections between people and the natural environment; delving into the complexity of humanity’s relationships with the landscape through the work of contemporary artists who use living plants in their art. Rather than simply drawing inspiration from the biosphere, these artists utilize plant matter as their artistic media, incorporate natural growth processes to create striking images, employ plants with pollutant-eliminating abilities in interactive sculptures to create healthy social spaces, and even embrace plants as active collaborators in their work.

Thirty-six seniors are included in this year's annual exhibit. Each student has investigated a topic of his/her choice to produce a body of work, including an artist book graphic summary of his/her thesis journey. This year topics cover a wide range--serious, playful, personal, and political-- for example: 'The Journey,' a personal cancer survivor narrative; 'Hush,' the suicide of a loved one; and 'Deforestation,' an investigation of the Amazon.

The artists and designers in this exhibition build sculptures and site-specific installations that challenge us to see our constructed world anew. Our relationship to buildings is often taken for granted, but the works in this exhibition – whether an abstracted abbey ceiling tilted on its side or an elevated evocation of a city street – reveal overlooked and sometimes hidden features of the architectural spaces in which we live and work.

Binh Danh, Paula Hayes, Tim Knowles, & Workingman Collective

This exhibition explores the intersections between people and the natural environment; delving into the complexity of humanity’s relationships with the landscape through the work of contemporary artists who use living plants in their art. Rather than simply drawing inspiration from the biosphere, these artists utilize plant matter as their artistic media, incorporate natural growth processes to create striking images, employ plants with pollutant-eliminating abilities in interactive sculptures to create healthy social spaces, and even embrace plants as active collaborators in their work.

Sze Tsung LEONG (American and British, born Mexico City 1970) is an artist based in New York. His work includes the series Cities, a detailed depiction of urban formations throughout the globe, from medieval towns to recent constructions, that together form a picture of the world at this particular moment in time at the beginning of the twenty-first century; Horizons, an international collection of images of natural terrains and urban landscapes that considers the relationships between far and near, foreign and familiar; and History Images, which examines the erasure of history and the reshaping of society through the built environment.

As a young man, he read a phrase that stayed with him through his life: “In Search of the Miraculous.” One could say that all human experience is a miracle—memory, color, taste, Vermeer, stars, watermelon, etc. For those like Glaser, the act of making things that move the mind is perhaps the deepest aspiration to the miraculous. How They're Hanging with David Nolta

David Nolta says, "I recently became interested in the aesthetics which determine (and are the effect of) the juxtaposition of images in museum "hangs." What are museum curators saying when they combine images, and what are the figures in the images themselves looking at? What relationships are suggested--intentionally or accidentally--by these juxtapositions? And, given the basic fact that framing devices rarely correspond to the viewer's visual field, where do works of art REALLY begin and end? This lecture will illustrate and explore some of the devices and implications of the actual boundaries and relationships between works of art."

David Nolta is professor of art history at MassArt. He holds a BA from the University of Michigan, an MA from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from Yale University. His fellowships and awards include: Fulbright, Kress, Mellon, American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, Harvard University; and the Frances Blanshard Prize for outstanding dissertation in the History of Art, Yale University.

The artists and designers in this exhibition build sculptures and site-specific installations that challenge us to see our constructed world anew. Our relationship to buildings is often taken for granted, but the works in this exhibition – whether an abstracted abbey ceiling tilted on its side or an elevated evocation of a city street – reveal overlooked and sometimes hidden features of the architectural spaces in which we live and work.

Binh Danh, Paula Hayes, Tim Knowles, & Workingman Collective

This exhibition explores the intersections between people and the natural environment; delving into the complexity of humanity’s relationships with the landscape through the work of contemporary artists who use living plants in their art. Rather than simply drawing inspiration from the biosphere, these artists utilize plant matter as their artistic media, incorporate natural growth processes to create striking images, employ plants with pollutant-eliminating abilities in interactive sculptures to create healthy social spaces, and even embrace plants as active collaborators in their work.

This exhibition was curated by Lisa Tung, Director of Curatorial Programs.

Elizabeth Kolbert is a staff writer for the New Yorker and author of the influential book, Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change.

She will speak about how the arts can impact the perception of climate change issues in our communities today.

Elizabeth Kolbert traveled from Alaska to Greenland, and visited top scientists, to get to the heart of the debate over global warming. Growing out of a groundbreaking three-part series in The New Yorker (which won the 2006 National Magazine Award in the category Public Interest), Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change brings the environment into the consciousness of the American people and asks what, if anything, can be done, and how we can save our planet. She explains the science and the studies, draws frightening parallels to lost ancient civilizations, unpacks the politics, and presents the personal tales of those who are being affected most—the people who make their homes near the poles and, in an eerie foreshadowing, are watching their worlds disappear.

Elizabeth Kolbert has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1999. She has written dozens of pieces for the magazine, including profiles of Senator Hillary Clinton, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Her series on global warming, “The Climate of Man,” appeared in The New Yorker in the spring of 2005 and won the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s magazine award. Also in 2006, she received the National Academy of Sciences Communication Award in the newspaper/magazine category and was awarded a Lannan Writing Fellowship. In September 2010, Kolbert received the prestigious Heinz Award which recognizes individuals who are addressing global change caused by the impact of human activities and natural processes on the environment. She also won a 2010 National Magazine Award in the Reviews and Criticism category for her work in the New Yorker and the Sierra Club's 2011 David R. Brower Award.

Elizabeth Kolbert’s stories have also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Mother Jones, and have been anthologized in The Best American Science and Nature Writing and The Best American Political Writing. She edited The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2009. A collection of her work, The Prophet of Love and Other Tales of Power and Deceit, was published in 2004. Prior to joining the staff of The New Yorker, Kolbert was a political reporter for The New York Times.
