DESCRIPTION:Montana Triennial \nMay – August 2012\n\nMAM’s Second Montan
a Triennial will be hosted May –August 2012. Both the Carnegie and Arest
y Galleries will feature works selected for inclusion in this important
juried exhibition. The juried exhibition is open to all artists living a
nd working in the state of Montana and will feature work by both establi
shed and emerging artists statewide and include a variety of media. \n\n
This major statewide event invites artists from every corner of the stat
 e and produces a full-color catalogue including the selected artists\, c
omplete with a juror’s essay. A triennial is intended to serve as a surv
ey exhibition of a particular region\, with artworks selected by a respe
cted juror or panel from outside of the region. Following the reopening
of the extensively renovated MAM in September 2006\, the institution fel
t uniquely positioned with its new gallery spaces to host this significa
nt regional survey\, the first Triennial was hosted in 2009. We are now
gearing up for the Montana Triennial 2012.\n\nArtists should look for th
e upcoming submission applications beginning on-line in October. All sub
missions will be conducted on-line. MAM is thrilled that Keith Wells\, C
urator of Art at Washington State University’s Museum of Art\, will be o
ur guest curator for this important exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Purple: Selections From MAM Collections \nMay 4 – September
 9\, 2012 // Travel Montana Lobby & Lela Autio Education Gallery \n\nThe
Missoula Art Museum is committed to always displaying a portion of our p
ermanent collection in the museum. Over the years\, the staff has used s
everal different themes to organize a collection exhibit\, such as flora
and fauna\, the landscape\, or a particular media like photography\, th
e book arts or ceramics. Establishing a theme is a means of featuring ar
tworks in different ways\, developing scholarship\, and encouraging appr
eciation of MAM s collection.\n\nColor is one of the keys to communicati
ng ideas in the art world\, so why not develop an exhibit based on the u
se of a color\, say Purple? This approach might seem serendipitous\, but
it also provides an opportunity to examine art objects side by side tha
t might otherwise never be looked at together. This explains the chemist
ry of an exhibition\, and examining an artist s decision to use a partic
ular color grants insight into their practice. Surveying the collection
\, we discovered several artists who fearlessly used purple\, including F
reeman Butts\, Walter Hook\, Gennie DeWeese\, Leslie Van Stavern Millar
\, and several Hmong textile artists. \n\nPurple has a very interesting h
istory. In bygone times\, purple has been associated with royalty and po
wer\, but the secret of that power lies in the glands of a tiny shellfis
h creature\, with origins as early as the Minoan civilization. Tyrian Pu
rple\, the purple dye of the Phoenicians mentioned in texts dating back
to about 1600 B.C.\, was produced from the mucus of the hypobranchial gl
and of various species of marine mollusks. It took some 12\,000 shellfis
h to extract 1.5 grams of the pure dye. Legend credits its discovery to
Heracles dog whose mouth was stained purple from chewing on snails along
the Levantine \ncoast. King Phoenix received a purple dyed robe from He
racles and decreed the rulers of Phoenicia should wear this color as a r
oyal symbol. \n\nRome\, Egypt\, and Persia used purple as the imperial s
tandard. With the decline of the Roman Empire\, the use of Tyrian Purple
also declined\, and large-scale production ceased with the fall of Cons
tantinople in 1453 A.D. \n\nThe birth of the synthetic dye industry can
be traced to the discovery of an aniline based purple dye\, mauveine\, b
y the English chemist William H. Perkin in 1856. It became quite fashion
able and affordable to wear clothing dyed with mauve. \n\nToday\, genuin
e Tyrian Purple remains the domain of the rich and famous\, but the acce
ssibility of synthetic dyes\, paints and pigments has removed the mystiq
ue of purple. While the color purple has historical and cultural meaning
\, the selections from the collection indicate an artist s attitudes fre
e from the preconceived notions of the preciousness of the pigment.

DESCRIPTION:MAM’s Goldberg Family Library will host an intimate and educ
ational exhibition of raku ceramics featuring works from both the collec
tions of MAM and our friends at The Clay Studio of Missoula. \n\nThe cer
amic artist Paul Soldner\, whose Woodfire Vase is included in the exhibi
t\, is one of a handful of ceramic artists that popularized raku in the
United States back in the early 1950s\, and indeed developed what is kno
wn today as “American Raku.”\n\nRaku is a pottery technique with origins
in 16th century Japan\, associated with the hand-formed vessels of the
Tea Ceremony. Most types of pottery are loaded into a cold kiln where th
e firing proceeds slowly and the pieces are allowed to cool slowly. In r
aku\, however\, the pieces are loaded into a hot kiln and when the firin
g is completed\,\nimmediately removed from the kiln while still glowing
hot. The traditional raku technique was adopted and transformed by Soldn
er as his major medium of expression. Today\, raku has innovated away fr
om its traditional applications\, but still requires the same depth of k
nowledge and skill. As Soldner states: \n\n“In the spirit of raku\, ther
e is the necessity to embrace the element of surprise. There can be no f
ear of losing what was once planned and there must be an urge to grow al
ong with the discovery of the unknown. In the spirit of raku: make no de
mands\, expect nothing\, follow no absolute plan\, be secure in change\,
learn to accept another solution and\, finally\, prefer to gamble on yo
 ur own intuition.”

In the spirit of raku: make no de
mands\, expect nothing\, follow no absolute plan\, be secure in change\,
learn to accept another solution and\, finally\, prefer to gamble on yo
 ur own intuition.”

a Triennial will be hosted May –August 2012.

MAM is thrilled that Keith Wells\, C
urator of Art at Washington State University’s Museum of Art\, will be o

amic artist Paul Soldner\, whose Woodfire Vase is included in the exhibi
t\, is one of a handful of ceramic artists that popularized raku in the
United States back in the early 1950s\, and indeed developed what is kno
wn today as “American Raku.”\n\nRaku is a pottery technique with origins
in 16th century Japan\, associated with the hand-formed vessels of the
Tea Ceremony.

DESCRIPTION:Montana Triennial \nMay – August 2012\n\nMAM’s Second Montan
a Triennial will be hosted May –August 2012. Both the Carnegie and Arest
y Galleries will feature works selected for inclusion in this important
juried exhibition. The juried exhibition is open to all artists living a

shed and emerging artists statewide and include a variety of media.
