DESCRIPTION:Macculloch Hall Historical Museum presents a different side
of the Civil War in The Other Side of War: The Civil War on the Home Fro
nt. The exhibit will be featured in the museum’s upstairs gallery from
April 1st through November 11th. Life on the home front was not easy fo
r loved ones whom the soldiers left behind Women played an important rol
e in the Union war effort\; starting the U.S. Sanitary Commission\, serv
ing as nurses\, gathering goods and raising money for the soldiers all c
ontributed to the Union victory. \n\nThe stories of the men and women wh
o battled through the war on both fronts—the battlefield and at home—are
heroic and moving. Local Morris County men fighting in the war wrote h
ome asking for various supplies unavailable through traditional army sup
ply channels. One of these men\, Lindley Hoffman Miller who lived at Ma
cculloch Hall\, wrote letters and poems home describing his experiences
as a white officer of a regiment of black troops. Robert Gould Shaw\, wh
o led one of the first black regiments (upon whom the movie Glory was ba
sed)\, his sister Josephine Shaw Lowell and her husband Charles Russell
Lowell shared intriguing stories of heroism on the battlefield and takin
g place at home with one another in their letters and letterbooks. \n\nM
acculloch Hall Historical Museum preserves the history of the Macculloch
-Miller families\, the Morris area community\, and the legacy of its fou
nder W. Parsons Todd through its historic site\, collections\, exhibits

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 13\, celebrate Mother’s Day with activities
related to Macculloch Hall and the current Civil War exhibit “Gone for a
Soldier:” Jerseymen in the Civil War exhibit. Macculloch Hall Historica
l Museum in collaboration with the New Jersey Civil War Sesquicentennial
Committee (NJCW150) created this major exhibit which commemorates the p
articipation and heroism of Jerseymen in a major turning point in U.S. h
istory. The exhibit brings together for the first time nearly two hundre
d objects from the Civil War from over thirty museums\, historical socie
ties\, and private collections. Also on display is the new upstairs gall
ery exhibit The Other Side of War: The Civil War on the Home Front. This
exhibit may be of special interest as it gives insight into what it was
like for those women left behind when men went off to war. \n\nAdmissio
n for Moms is free and she and her family can enjoy a tour of the museum
\, visit to the current exhibits and then a garden tour with Executive D
irector Carrie Fellows at 2:45pm. Children can make a quilt square as a
memento for their mom\, aunt\, or special female in their life. Using a
paper base\, glue sticks\, and fabric pieces\, children can come up with
fun geometrical designs for their quilt. Examples of popular quilt patt
erns from the past will be available to look at in books. Families can a
lso take part in a scavenger hunt through the “Gone for a Soldier”: exhi
bit. Children can find both one-of-a-kind Civil War artifacts and everyd
ay items from the Civil War soldier’s life while “on the hunt”. Activiti
es also introduce children to the secret codes used by the Union and Con
federacy during the Civil War. The program will take place from 1pm unti
l 4pm and general admission is required which includes a house tour\, ex
hibits and the program.\n\nA Civil War Lecture Series in conjunction wit
h the “Gone for a Soldier” exhibit is being held monthly. On Wednesday M
ay 23rd at 7pm Bernard Olsen will present “New Jersey’s Civil War Experi
ence: Letters & Journals of Members of the 13th and 14th Volunteers” at
the Cincinnati Masonic Lodge No. 3\, 39 Maple Avenue. Full details about
the lectures\, book signings\, and family-friendly events can be viewed
on the museum’s Facebook events page\, which can be accessed through th
e Museum website. \n\nThe New Jersey Sesquicentennial Committee\, commem
orating the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War\, a volunteer or
ganization working for increased awareness and recognition of New Jersey

DESCRIPTION:Macroinvertebrates—known outside of scientific circles as bu
 gs\, worms\, mollusks and other small\, spineless creatures—are useful w
hen it comes to studying water quality and environmental conditions in a
nd around a stream. For instance\, dragonflies\, aquatic snails\, and fl
atworms can indicate whether the water in a stream is truly clean. Dr. L
ee Pollock\, retired Drew University Professor of Biology\, has studied
these small creatures each year in the Great Swamp watershed since 1992.
Join the Great Swamp Watershed Association on Tuesday\, May 22\, from 8
 :00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to hear findings from his 2011 studies\, along wit
h his long-term view of environmental trends and what they mean for our
local waters. This talk will take place at Kemmerer Library\, 19 Blue Mi

DESCRIPTION:Grand homes\, wealthy builders\, and some annoying neighbors
are part of the story of the development of Morristown’s historic resid
ential district. As two farms developed into one of the nation’s most p
restigious summer enclaves during the Gilded Age\, the new ‘summer cotta
ges’ changed the character of Morristown’s landscape and the local socia
