The world is a richer place because Shel Silverstein (1930-1999) passed through it, leaving behind an eclectic creative archive. He wrote and illustrated a shelf full of children's books, their whimsical verses remembered long after childhood's passing (can anyone forget Mrs. Twitter the babysitter/I think she's a little bit crazy/ she thinks the babysitter suppose /to sit upon the baby?). There's also a fat discography of Shel Silverstein hit songs (if you were lucky, you might even have heard him perform some of them). Other Silverstein treasures include countless adult poems and a whole series of one-act play collections under such catchall umbrella titles as The Bag Plays, The Sign Plays and The Bathroom Plays.

Simply put, Shel Silverstein was a one-man talent factory who turned the old adage Jack of all trades but master of none on its head. Those who knew him personally, like the Atlantic Theater Company's co-founder David Mamet, loved as well as admired him.

An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein is Mamet and company's tribute to Silverstein's gleeful and at times ghoulish humor. The evening features ten mini-comedies (Definitely for adults only!) culled from his various play series. The evening is as much a gift to the company as to the honoree. Even the slightest conceit affords the performers a chance to showcase their comedic dexterity

Buffalo Bill, New Orleans and Jazz” coming to Sandoz Center

The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center will put their own spin on Mardi Gras by bringing Steve Friesen, Director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave in Golden, Colorado, to Chadron on Friday, February 17, 2012. Friesen will be giving a presentation titled “Laissez le Bontemps Roulez: Buffalo Bill, New Orleans and Jazz”

The presentation will examine Buffalo Bill’s disastrous visit to New Orleans during the 1884-1885 Wild West Show season. This visit, though, would have a far reaching impact on both the people of that city and on American culture. When the Wild West left New Orleans, it left the African American population of that city with new hope and new pride that blossomed into the Mardi Gras Indian movement. The Mardi Gras Indians have since become a vibrant folk culture within the city and have influenced everything from jazz to rock and roll.

Center Director Sarah Polak said “Steve is a truly dynamic speaker whose passion for the West and knowledge of Buffalo Bill will certainly entertain and educate those in attendance. We very excited about hosting this presentation and look forward to hosting a great crowd as well. ” Friesen has been director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave since 1995. During this time he has given numerous lectures about Buffalo Bill and the West. His book Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary was published in summer of 2010 by Fulcrum Press.

The presentation starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Center’s Chicoine Atrium. The event is free to the public, with underwriting from the CSC Diversity Committee and the CSC Office of Student Activities.

Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents

AWR 148: Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents –
Partnering Rural Law Enforcement and the Local School
Systems is an 8-hour, DHS-approved course designed to educate
rural law enforcement personnel as well as school
administrators and staff on the elements that would allow for an
effective response to school-based emergencies. Schools in small,
rural, and remote areas across the country account for almost 23
percent of the total student population (more than 11 million
students). Rural schools, law enforcement, and other emergency
responders are often limited in resources, so it is imperative that all
potentially affected parties collaborate on planning, preparing,
communicating, responding, and recovering from a school-based
incident.
This tuition-free course is beneficial for rural police and sheriff
departments, school administrators, school resource officers,
counselors, and others involved in school safety and security.
Topics covered include:
 Introduction to Incident Planning and Preparedness
 Proactive Threat Mitigation
 Incident Response
 Incident Recovery
 Vulnerability Assessments
 Threat Assessment Management
 Incident Defusing and Debriefing
 Parent Reunification
 Anniversaries, Memorials, “Copy-Cats”
*Please note all foreign nationals need to complete a DHS Foreign National Visitor
