m an eight-day trip through East Germany in December and January 1989-90
during the waning days of Communism. This exhibition has traveled throu
ghout the Commonwealth of Virginia and has been exhibited at the Virgini

DESCRIPTION:• January 20th at 5:30 in Olin Recital Hall-Artist Lecture-R
 ob Humphreys\n \n• January 20th from 6-8 in Smoyer Gallery-Opening Recep
tion\n\n\nMr. Humphreys is a painter\, printmaker\, and maker of objects
. Many people have known him personally: but not his work which he relig
iously hides and often enough destroys. Come look at the work.*\n\n*Par
aphrased and appropriated from Balthus\, 1968\n\n\nKit got her start as
 a painter assisting her father\, a self-taught artist\, sign-painter and
a master gold leaf letterer. Kit cites outsider art as an inspiration
as she often will paint over a thrift store painting\, incorporating the
found imagery into her vision. Ms. Keith expresses her love of imagery
from old magazines and advertisements. Kit's iconic portraits of elegant
 \, wistful\, figures\, carefully placed on maps\, old ledgers\, and disc
arded papers are stoic\, yet look as though they want to tell their stor
ies. Her 12 year old son\; Lincoln \, is another driving force behind he
r creativity. His presence has inspired Kit to make lighter and brighter
  pieces. Kit has had many exhibitions\, both in New York and St. Louis\;
solo shows at OK Harris and William Shearburn Gallery\, including a ser
ies of drawings on 14 box spring mattresses at Exit Art. Her illustratio
ns have also been featured in the New York Times\, and New Yorker magazi
 ne.

and parody of Edgar Allan Poe’s sci-fi classic "journey to the center of

r of "Big Machine." "Edgar Allen Poe has inspired many authors but Mat J
ohnson has the inspired audacity to both honor and discredit the man\, o

tion\n\n\nMr.
His presence has inspired Kit to make lighter and brighter
  pieces. Kit has had many exhibitions\, both in New York and St. Louis\;
solo shows at OK Harris and William Shearburn Gallery\, including a ser
ies of drawings on 14 box spring mattresses at Exit Art. Her illustratio
ns have also been featured in the New York Times\, and New Yorker magazi

His presence has inspired Kit to make lighter and brighter
  pieces. Kit has had many exhibitions\, both in New York and St. Louis\;
solo shows at OK Harris and William Shearburn Gallery\, including a ser
ies of drawings on 14 box spring mattresses at Exit Art. Her illustratio
ns have also been featured in the New York Times\, and New Yorker magazi
 ne.

during the waning days of Communism. This exhibition has traveled throu

DESCRIPTION:• January 20th at 5:30 in Olin Recital Hall-Artist Lecture-R

tion\n\n\nMr.
His presence has inspired Kit to make lighter and brighter
  pieces. Kit has had many exhibitions\, both in New York and St. Louis\;
solo shows at OK Harris and William Shearburn Gallery\, including a ser
ies of drawings on 14 box spring mattresses at Exit Art. Her illustratio
ns have also been featured in the New York Times\, and New Yorker magazi
 ne.

DESCRIPTION:Hollins University is hosting an Oxfam America Hunger Banque
 t on Sunday\, February 12 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. in Ballator Gallery\, locat
ed on the upper level of Moody Student Center. The event\, which explore
s the causes of world hunger and offers information on how to make a dif
ference in the fight against poverty\, is open to the public. A minimum
donation of $3 is requested to participate. Assistant Professor and Dire
ctor of International Studies Jon Bohland will lead the discussion. At t
he outset of an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet\, guests draw tickets at ra
 ndom that assign them each to a high-\, middle-\, or low-income tier – b
ased on the latest statistics about the number of people living in pover
ty. Each income level receives a corresponding meal: The 15 percent in t
he high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal\; the 35 percent in the
middle-income section eat a simple meal of rice and beans\; and the 50 p
ercent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice
and water. (Sodexo\, which provides food services at Hollins\, is donati
ng all meals for the event.) Guests can also assume characterizations th
at describe the situation of a specific person at the income level to wh
ich they’ve been assigned. Finally\, all guests are invited to share the
ir thoughts after the meal and to take action. After an Oxfam America Hu
nger Banquet\, few participants leave with full stomachs\, but the goal
is to promote greater insight into the issues of hunger and poverty. Stu
dents Helping Achieve Rewarding Experiences (SHARE)\, Hollins’ student-r

s know how they can get involved in their local community. Oxfam America
