This exhibition has traveled throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and has been exhibited at the Virginia Museum for Fine Arts in Richmond. It has served as a vehicle for presenting sensitive and revealing views of a nation that was on the verge of reunification. Photographs were taken by American photographer Page Chichester and Helmut Brinkman, a German photographer. Travelogue/Dialogue was written by Page Chichester and Katharina Giebel-Chichester. Katharina, an artist and West German native, composed the second part of the commentary in the catalogue as a recollection of growing up with memories of the Berlin Wall. School field trips encouraged.

Winter Hours: please check our website for our hours.

Art: art exhibition, art gallery
Cost: free
Contact: The Jacksonville Center for the Arts
More info: www.jacksonvillecenter.org

Art Exhibition: Olin Gallery: Rob Humphreys-Cornucopia Smoyer Gallery: Kit Keith-Troubled Girls and Home Economics

Roanoke College Olin Galleries
221 College Lane
Salem, VA 24153
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 1 – 4pm

• January 20th at 5:30 in Olin Recital Hall-Artist Lecture-Rob Humphreys

• January 20th from 6-8 in Smoyer Gallery-Opening Reception

Mr. Humphreys is a painter, printmaker, and maker of objects. Many people have known him personally: but not his work which he religiously hides and often enough destroys. Come look at the work.*

*Paraphrased and appropriated from Balthus, 1968

Kit got her start as a painter assisting her father, a self-taught artist, sign-painter and a master gold leaf letterer. Kit cites outsider art as an inspiration as she often will paint over a thrift store painting, incorporating the found imagery into her vision. Ms. Keith expresses her love of imagery from old magazines and advertisements. Kit's iconic portraits of elegant, wistful, figures, carefully placed on maps, old ledgers, and discarded papers are stoic, yet look as though they want to tell their stories. Her 12 year old son; Lincoln , is another driving force behind her creativity. His presence has inspired Kit to make lighter and brighter pieces. Kit has had many exhibitions, both in New York and St. Louis; solo shows at OK Harris and William Shearburn Gallery, including a series of drawings on 14 box spring mattresses at Exit Art. Her illustrations have also been featured in the New York Times, and New Yorker magazine.

Art: art exhibition, art gallery
Cost: Free Admission
Contact: Talia Logan 540-375-2332 mlogan@roanoke.edu
More info: www.roanoke.edu…

Scenes from Behind the Wall: Images of East Berlin 1989/1990

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts
220 Parkway Lane South Suite 1
Floyd, VA 24091
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 10am – 3pm

This black and white photography exhibit features images from an eight-day trip through East Germany in December and January 1989-90 during the waning days of Communism. This exhibition has traveled throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and has been exhibited at the Virginia Museum for Fine Arts in Richmond. It has served as a vehicle for presenting sensitive and revealing views of a nation that was on the verge of reunification.

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts
220 Parkway Lane South Suite 1
Floyd, VA 24091
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 2 – 4pm

This black and white photography exhibit features images from an eight-day trip through East Germany in December and January 1989-90 during the waning days of Communism. This exhibition has traveled throughout the Commonweath of Virginia and has been exhibited at the Virginia Museum for Fine Arts in Richmond. Barbara and Clemens von Claparede-Crola will conduct the gallery walk/talk beginning at 2:30pm and discuss their first-hand experience of living in Germany during these trying times.
