DESCRIPTION:This slide-illustrated presentation is the story of Union Ge
neral Francis C. Barlow and his wife\, Arabella\, and Confederate Genera
l John B. Gordon and his wife\, Fanny. Both wives followed their husban
ds from battlefield to battlefield and each nursed their spouse back fro
 m life-threatening wounds. At Gettysburg\, Gordon saved Barlow’s life b
y arranging for Arabella to come through his lines to be with her husban
d—only to face him in head-to-head combat ten months later at Spotsylvan
ia. After the war\, the two warriors—each thinking the other dead—met a
t a dinner party and were “resurrected” to each other\, becoming fast fr
iends for the rest of their lives. So ironic are the encounters that on
e would think the story was scripted in Hollywood.

DESCRIPTION:As Americans observe the 150th anniversary of the beginning
of the Civil War\, the Kent State University Museum will present an exhi
bit about the material circumstances and domestic life during the Civil
War and in the years that followed. Through the display of women’s and c
hildren’s costumes\, which will be supplemented with related photographs
\, decorative arts and women’s magazines\, the exhibit “On the Home Fron
t: Civil War Fashions and Domestic Life” will focus on the daily life an
d experiences of the American civilian population during the Civil War.
Far from being a simple trivial diversion during such a critical period
\, fashion provides a unique window into the lived experience of American
s who despite being far from the battlefields were deeply and immediatel

\, fashion provides a unique window into the lived experience of American
s who despite being far from the battlefields were deeply and immediatel
 y touched by the conflict.
