Because\, in the end\, she is as clever as she is cold-blooded.\n\nAnd then there’s Loretta Vandiver.\n\nOh\, Loretta was cold-blooded enough\, no doubt about that. It was in the other depar tment where she fell short.\n\nHow so? Well\, let’s say you’re a wife an d you want the hubby done in for the insurance payoff. Would you conside r it prudent to attempt it if the husband in question happened to be you r fourth and you were already on record as having attempted to kill husb ands one through three? Might that not make the authorities a tad suspic ious when spouse number four ends up the victim of foul play? Loretta di dn’t worry about that.\n\nLoretta’s MO needed some adjustment\, too. She ’d seduce a man—any man would do—and then try to convince the guy to kil l her hubby. It was just her bad luck that each and every one of those p aramours had enough scruples to refuse her offer. No problem\, though. S he’d just move right on to the next prospective killer—never mind that t hose other guys were\, the whole lot of them\, prospective witnesses. Su rely they could all keep a secret.\n\nAs a last resort\, Loretta had to get her adult son\, Micah\, to commit the heinous act. Her plan there wa sn’t too bad. As her husband was a doctor\, and the doctor’s clinic was always closed for lunch\, she’d have Micah come in and kill his stepfath er while no one was present to witness the crime other than herself. She even had a decent cover story\, about how a biker had committed the cri me. It could have worked.\n\nIF Micah hadn’t been running late.\n\nIF th ere weren’t already patients in the lobby and employees in the clinic—wh ich meant numerous eyewitnesses to the crime. At least Micah was wearing a mask at the time\, so all those witnesses could only testify as to ha ving seen a thin man in a ski mask commit the murder. Right?\n\nBut Lore tta stuck to her original story. The biker story. And she pled not guilt y when—surprise! surprise!—the cops arrested her.\n\nHow NOT to Commit a Murder\, written by local playwright Wayne Miller and directed by Mille r along with Jason Summer\, is the chronicle of Loretta’s murder trial. And if you thought her execution of the crime was bad\, just wait until you see how she tries to exonerate herself.\n\nOh\, and believe it or no t\, this play is inspired by actual events.\n\nIt really is true what th ey say about truth and fiction.
