Twenty-seven hours of class time includes eight 2-½ hour weekly classes and one full day Sunday session. Yoga Therapy for Cancer adapts traditional Yoga poses and movements to meet individual needs for those living with cancer including anyone in active treatment. Recent research suggests Yoga may decrease symptoms and side effects and increase energy level and general sense of well-being.

Each class in the series will include learning postures and gentle movements in the chair, breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as imagery and meditation. We will also discuss Yoga philosophy and the rationales for using adaptive Yoga practices to enhance physical and emotional wellness during the cancer journey.

Michelle Stortz, CYT, CMT, MFA is a Yoga Therapist, Massage Therapist and Movement Educator. She specializes in Yoga Therapy for Cancer and began working with survivors in the Philadelphia area after her training from Jnani Chapman, RN at the Integral Yoga Academy in Virginia. She has also trained and taught in the Vinyasa style for over seven years. As a Swedish-based massage therapist she has cultivated, over a sixteen- year practice, a unique style that includes Deep Tissue, Trigger-point, and Reiki techniques. This bodywork is informed by her studies in meditation and various schools of energy cultivation and by her twenty years of experience in contemporary dance and somatic practices. As a Movement Educator she offers the workshop Movement for People with Bodies which is designed to support the Average Joe’s physical exploration into the body’s patterns, its strength, weaknesses and areas that are ready for change. Michelle teaches contemporary dance at Bryn Mawr College. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Texas native.

Yoga Therapy for Cancer Patients and those at High Risk

Yoga Therapy for Cancer adapts traditional Yoga poses and movements to meet individual needs for those living with cancer including anyone in active treatment. Recent research suggests Yoga may decrease symptoms and side effects and increase energy level and general sense of well-being.

Benefits

• Improved coping skills
• Improvement in social and emotional well-being

Each class in the series will include learning postures and gentle movements in the chair, breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as imagery and meditation. We will also discuss the physiological changes that happen during such practices so as to understand why they are so effective. We will also discuss Yoga philosophy and the rationales for using adaptive Yoga practices to enhance physical and emotional wellness during the cancer journey.

Suggested donation:
$15 per class or $108 for 9 classes

Michelle Stortz, CYT, CMT, MFA is a Yoga Therapist, Massage Therapist and Movement Educator. She specializes in Yoga Therapy for Cancer and began working with survivors in the Philadelphia area after her training from Jnani Chapman, RN at the Integral Yoga Academy in Virginia. She has also trained and taught in the Vinyasa style for over seven years. As a Swedish-based massage therapist she has cultivated, over a sixteen- year practice, a unique style that includes Deep Tissue, Trigger-point, and Reiki techniques. This bodywork is informed by her studies in meditation and various schools of energy cultivation and by her twenty years of experience in contemporary dance and somatic practices. As a Movement Educator she offers the workshop Movement for People with Bodies which is designed to support the Average Joe’s physical exploration into the body’s patterns, its strength, weaknesses and areas that are ready for change. Michelle teaches contemporary dance at Bryn Mawr College. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Texas native.

We will also discuss Yoga philosophy and the rationales for using adaptive Yoga practices to enhance physical and emotional wellness during the cancer journey.

Michelle Stortz, CYT, CMT, MFA is a Yoga Therapist, Massage Therapist and Movement Educator. She specializes in Yoga Therapy for Cancer and began working with survivors in the Philadelphia area after her training from Jnani Chapman, RN at the Integral Yoga Academy in Virginia. She has also trained and taught in the Vinyasa style for over seven years. As a Swedish-based massage therapist she has cultivated, over a sixteen- year practice, a unique style that includes Deep Tissue, Trigger-point, and Reiki techniques. This bodywork is informed by her studies in meditation and various schools of energy cultivation and by her twenty years of experience in contemporary dance and somatic practices. As a Movement Educator she offers the workshop Movement for People with Bodies which is designed to support the Average Joe’s physical exploration into the body’s patterns, its strength, weaknesses and areas that are ready for change. Michelle teaches contemporary dance at Bryn Mawr College. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Texas native.
