DESCRIPTION:Neurostatistics Working Group\n\nGregory Levin\nDoctoral Stu
 dent\, Department of Biostatistics\, University of Washington\n\nABSTRAC
T: Adaptive designs have been proposed as a promising new approach that
may help improve the efficiency of the drug discovery process. Many rece
nt papers have focused on the potential gains in flexibility and efficie
ncy with the use of adaptive hypothesis testing methods that control the
type I error. However\, confirmatory phase III clinical trials also nee
d to produce results that are interpretable\, in that sufficiently relia
ble and precise estimates of treatment effect can be computed at the end
of the study. This helps ensure that regulatory decisions are based on
reliable evidence of benefit to risk\, new drugs are appropriately label
ed\, and clinicians can effectively practice evidence-based medicine. We
introduce and evaluate different methods to compute point and interval
estimates after a pre-specified adaptive design allowing interim modific
ations to the sampling plan based on the unblinded estimate of treatment
  effect.

DESCRIPTION:Utilizing both case studies and a didactic curriculum\, Intr
oduction To Translational Medicine (ITTM) is a survey course that offers
a comprehensive introduction to the skills necessary to embark on a car
eer in translational research\, particularly in the experience of bringi
ng an idea from the laboratory to first-in-human trials (so-called T1 tr
anslational research). This course focuses on the principles and practic
es of translational medicine as they apply to the development of a new d
rug (small molecules and/or biologics)\, device\, or diagnostic. Case st
udies allow participants to grasp the real workings of the concepts disc
ussed. Each attendee receives significant training in the pre-clinical d
evelopment of novel targets and leads\, clinical pharmacology\, the regu
latory process\, and design of the first-in-human clinical trial. In add
ition\, participants learn more about funding opportunities for translat
ional research\, as well as how to navigate academic/industrial collabor
ations that lead to the successful development of new drugs or methodolo
 gies.\n\nContact Email: ittmcourse@catalyst.harvard.edu\nContact Phone:
