DESCRIPTION:Maps fascinate many people because of the ability of those a
ncient documents to reveal stories about the past. Maps serve a variety
of practical purposes — to document new discoveries\, to facilitate trav
el\, to claim land and to record military activity. As scientific and au
thoritative documents\, maps imparted a perception of power and control
over the environment. They also served as important tools for swaying pu
blic opinion when their creators carefully considered what information t
o include — or omit.\n\nA new Colonial Williamsburg exhibition explores
this captivating world of maps and prints in myriad detail. “More Than M
eets The Eye” opens Saturday\, March 26 in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative
Arts Museum.\n\n“The exhibition takes our guests from the very earliest
English attempts to settle North America through the American Revolutio
n\,” said Margaret Pritchard\, Colonial Williamsburg’s curator of maps a
nd prints. “Upon arrival\, explorers and colonists began to encounter ot
her cultures and to promote settlement of the New World. The exhibition
documents changing relationships with the native population\, the clash
of France and Great Britain to control the North American continent and
finally\, victory over the British and the birth of a new nation.”\n\nFr
om the very first attempts to colonize the Americas\, artists and mapmak
ers created impressions of the New World that fueled European imaginatio
 ns. However\, 17th- and 18th-century maps\, portraits\, landscapes and c
artoons depicting America often asserted a European perspective that con
veyed and reinforced a host of attitudes and values.\n\n“More Than Meets
The Eye” will be on view through August 2012. The Nicholas and Eleanor
Chabraja Foundation funded the exhibition. The Chabrajas\, of Lake Fores
t\, Ill.\, have supported Colonial Williamsburg more than 30 years and a
re members of the Colonial Williamsburg Associates.\n\nThe Art Museums o
f Colonial Williamsburg include the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Mu
seum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. The Abby Aldrich Roc
kefeller Folk Art Museum is home to the nation’s premier collection of A
merican folk art\, with more than 5\,000 folk art objects made during th
e 18th\, 19th and 20th centuries. The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Mus
eum exhibits the best in British and American decorative arts from 1670–
1830.\n\nThe Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg are located at the int
ersection of Francis and South Henry Streets in Williamsburg\, Va.\, and
are entered through the Public Hospital of 1773. Museum hours are 10 a.
 m. to 5 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday
through March 13\; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily thereafter. For museum prog

DESCRIPTION:A new traveling ceramics exhibition exploring the Old World
traditions of the early Carolina backcountry opens Sept. 24 in Colonial
Williamsburg’s DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. “Art in Clay: Mast
erworks of North Carolina Earthenware” is the first exhibit to celebrate
the achievements of North Carolina's 18th- and 19th-century potters. \n
Highly skilled craftsmen of European and British descent brought a varie
ty of Old World traditions with them to America and transformed clay int
o slipware dishes with designs reminiscent of 17th-century flower painti
ngs\, into pots and jars with vibrant abstract motifs\, and into a menag
erie of sculptural forms depicting owls\, foxes\, squirrels and other cr
eatures familiar to early settlers.\n“‛Art in Clay’ is a ground-breaking
effort that illustrates the rich artistic legacy of Carolina’s first ea
rthenware craftsmen\,” said Suzanne Hood\, Colonial Williamsburg’s assoc
iate curator of ceramics and glass. “The show includes masterfully decor
ated slipware\, sculptural bottles and refined creamware.”\nThe exhibiti
on includes more than 140 objects from distinguished public and private
collections\, many on display for the first time. Among the most masterf
ul are slipware dishes made by Moravian potters at Salem and Bethabara a
nd contemporary Germanic and British craftsmen in the Carolina Piedmont.
\n“Art in Clay” will be on view at DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museu
 m through July 29\, 2012. A Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket\, Mus
eum ticket or Good Neighbor Card is required for admittance. The Art Mus
eums of Colonial Williamsburg are located at 325 E. Francis St. at the
intersection of Francis and South Henry Streets in Williamsburg\, and ar
e entered through the Public Hospital of 1773. Museum hours are 10 a.m.
 to 7 p.m. daily. For museum program information\, telephone (757) 220-7
 724. \n“Art in Clay” is sponsored by Old Salem Museums & Gardens\, the C
hipstone Foundation and the Caxambas Foundation. The 2009 and 2010 volum
es of the award-winning journal\, Ceramics in America\, serve as catalog
s of the show. In addition to illustrating hundreds of examples of North
Carolina earthenware using the latest advances in digital photography\,
these journals present new research and insights by leading scholars fr
om multiple disciplines.\nThe Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg inclu
de the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace D
ecorative Arts Museum. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is h
ome to the nation’s premier collection of American folk art\, with more
than 5\,000 folk art objects made during the 18th\, 19th and 20th centur
ies. The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum exhibits the best in Brit
ish and American decorative arts from 1670–1830.\nThe Colonial Williamsb
urg Foundation is the not-for-profit educational and cultural organizati
on that preserves and operates the restored 18th-century Revolutionary c
apital of Virginia as a town-sized living history museum\, telling the i
nspirational stories of our nation’s founding men and women. Williamsbur
g is located in Virginia’s Tidewater region\, 20 minutes from Newport Ne
ws\, within an hour’s drive of Richmond and Norfolk\, and 150 miles sout
 h of Washington\, D.C.\, off Interstate 64. For more information about C
olonial Williamsburg\, call 1-800-HISTORY or visit Colonial Williamsburg
’s website at www.history.org.\nOld Salem Museums & Gardens in Winston-S
alem\, N.C.\, is one of America’s most comprehensive history attractions
. Its museums — the Historic Town of Salem and the Museum of Early South
ern Decorative Arts (MESDA)\, along with award-winning heirloom gardens
 — engage visitors in an educational and memorable historical experience
about those who lived and worked in the early South. For more informatio
n about the museums’ collections and educational programs\, please visit
www.oldsalem.org.\nThe Chipstone Foundation is dedicated to promoting A
merican decorative arts scholarship. Originating in the private collecti
on of Stanley and Polly Stone of Milwaukee\, Chipstone uses its objects
and resources to support progressive scholarship\, think tanks\, museum
projects and digital initiatives\, much of which can be accessed at www.
chipstone.org and at www.artbabble.org. Since 2001\, many of the founda
tion’s significant holdings have been on view in innovative displays at
the Milwaukee Art Museum. Each year\, the foundation publishes two schol
arly journals: American Furniture and Ceramics in America.\nThe Caxambas
Foundation— established by the late George S. Parker II\, former presi
dent\, CEO and chairman of the board of the Parker Pen Company—is a Milw

DESCRIPTION:A new Colonial Williamsburg exhibition showcases the “Cornel
l Hoard” —more than 6\,600 pieces of colonial currency squirreled away b
y a North Carolina loyalist prior to the American Revolution — and other
fascinating examples of coins and paper money from the Colonial William
sburg Foundation’s extensive numismatics collection.\n“Dollars\, Farthin
gs & Fables\; Money & Medals From the Colonial Williamsburg Collection”
opens Thanksgiving Day\, Thursday\, Nov. 25 at the DeWitt Wallace Decora
tive Arts Museum and explores facts and falsehoods\, realities and rumor
s associated with money including the Founding Fathers and the origins o
f the dollar.\n“Many people collect coins as tangible links to distant t
imes and places\,” said Erik Goldstein\, curator of mechanical arts and
numismatics. “Our collection spans 1\,000 years\, providing period image
s of a wide array of people\, places and things. Within it\, there are d
 atable depictions of famous people\, art\, architecture\, nature\, indus
try\, historical events\, and even patriotic and moral symbols.”\nThe ex
hibition contains examples of the extremes in money circulating in colon
ial and Revolutionary America: the largest coin — an 18th-century French
ecu nearly two inches in diameter — to the smallest — a 17th-century En
glish halfpenny\; from the largest denomination — an 18th-century Brazil
ian gold coin worth 20\,000 reis — to the smallest denomination — an Eng
 lish farthing worth one-quarter penny\; from the prettiest coin — a 17th
-century Dutch ducaton — to the ugliest — a 17th-century Bolivian “cob”
coin worth four reales.\nSeveral firsts in American paper money populat
e the exhibition. The first “greenback” is a £6 note issued in 1757 by t
he New Jersey colony. It was the first bill to sport a back side printed
in green ink. The first one dollar bill appears as a 1767 issue in the
Maryland colony\, and first $100 bill was issued in 1779 by the independ
ent state of South Carolina.\nThe exhibition also lays to rest several p
opular myths about money including the real price the Dutch paid for the
island of Manhattan in 1626\, the real truth about George Washington’s
famous coin toss and a popular myth about coins that protected the holde
 r from witchcraft.\n“Dollars\, Farthings & Fables\; Money & Medals From
the Colonial Williamsburg Collection” is the fifth new exhibition openin
g during the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum’s silver anniversary
year and will remain on view through December 2012. Admission is by Colo
nial Williamsburg admission ticket\, Museums ticket or Good Neighbor Car

 msburg Regional Library\, Panglossian Productions
DTSTAMP:20120504T155837Z
DESCRIPTION:Panglossian Productions and the Williamsburg Regional Librar
 y present a new production of PRIVATE EYES\, a poignant and thought-prov
oking comedy from the award-winning American playwright Steven Dietz.\n
\nThe play\, which originally premiered at the Arizona Theatre Company an
d was presented at the Humana Festival of New American Plays\, explores
truth and deception in romantic relationships by constantly shifting the
characters’ and the audience’s understanding of what’s really going on.
Are we in a play? A rehearsal for a play? Real life? Or a character’s m
ind?\n\nThe author describes PRIVATE EYES as “comedy of suspicion\,” whi
ch began as "a scene in which two lovers fail to speak the truth. And\,
like a lie\, the play grew. It began to go to greater and greater length
s to keep its own deceit afloat. It took my sense of structure for a rid
e and built a web of such complexity that clarity (a/k/a 'truth') was re
ndered virtually impossible."\n\nUnder the direction of Abigail Schumann
\, Panglossian’s production will feature set and costume design by Tom H
ammond and lighting design by Mark Howell. The cast will include Annie L
ewis\, John Cauthen\, Miguel Girona\, Alicia Hainsworth\, and Deirdre Jo
nes.\n\nPerformances at the Williamsburg Library Theatre\, 515 Scotland
 St.\, May 10\, 11\, 12\, 17 & 18 at 7:30 p.m. and May 20 at 2:00 pm. Tic
 kets: $16 Adults\, $14 Students/Seniors/Friends of the Library. Tickets
are available at www.panglossian.org\, by calling 757.259.4070\, and in

sburg Foundation’s extensive numismatics collection.\n“Dollars\, Farthin

opens Thanksgiving Day\, Thursday\, Nov.
Within it\, there are d
 atable depictions of famous people\, art\, architecture\, nature\, indus

glish halfpenny\; from the largest denomination — an 18th-century Brazil
ian gold coin worth 20\,000 reis — to the smallest denomination — an Eng

famous coin toss and a popular myth about coins that protected the holde

DESCRIPTION:How much power should a president have over civil rights dur
ing wartime? A modern quandary\, but one not unknown in the past. During
the Civil War Abraham Lincoln used the military to arrest and try thous
ands of American citizens who were suspected of disloyalty or of aiding
the Confederate war effort. Jonathan W. White\, assistant professor of
American Studies at Christopher Newport University\, will discuss the ri
ghts of citizens during the Civil War in a free program Tuesday\, May 22
at 7:30 p.m. in the Kitzinger Community Room of the James City County L
ibrary\, 7770 Croaker Rd. The program is free of charge thanks to a gra
nt from Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library and is presented as par
t of the programming associated with the traveling exhibit\, “Lincoln: T
he Constitution and the Civil War.” For more information visit http://wr
l.org/Lincoln or call Program Services at 259-4070.\n\nProfessor White i
s the author of “Abraham Lincoln and Treason in the Civil War: The Trial
s of John Merryman” (LSU Press\, 2011). His talk will explore Lincoln's
various internal security policies and discuss several perennially contr
oversial legal and constitutional issues in American history\, including
the nature and extent of presidential war powers\, the development of n
ational policies for dealing with disloyalty and treason\, and the prote
ction of civil liberties in wartime.\n\n“Lincoln: The Constitution and t
he Civil War\,” a national traveling exhibition at the James City County
Library from May 17 through July 13\, focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s stru
ggle to meet the constitutional challenges of the Civil War. The exhibit
is organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Libra
ry Association Public Programs Office with the help of a major grant fro
m the National Endowment for the Humanities: great ideas brought to life
. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name de
veloped by the National Constitution Center.

DESCRIPTION:The newest exhibition in the Art Museums of Colonial William
sburg offers guests a look behind the scenes on the process of recreatin
g Richard Charlton’s Coffeehouse. “This Old Coffeehouse\,” opening Sept.
25 at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum\, reveals the archaeolo
gical\, architectural\, and historical sleuthing that brought this impor
tant historic building back to Duke of Gloucester Street 120 years after
it was demolished. \nMuseum guests explore the process of developing th
e design\, erecting the building\, and furnishing the interior of the fi
rst major reconstruction project on Duke of Gloucester Street in 50 year
 s. The exhibit promises answers to several basic questions: “How do we k
now? How did we do it? Why did we do it?”\n“This exhibition provides our
guests with a better understanding of the research required for our pre
sentations on 18th-century life\,” said Matthew Webster\, Colonial Willi
amsburg’s director of historic architectural resources\, who curated the
exhibition. “The process that accurately recreated Charlton’s Coffeehou
se has not only returned an important structure to Williamsburg’s Histor
ic Area\, but also provided a valuable learning and interpretive opportu
nity.” \nThe exhibit draws on archaeology\, architecture\, decorative ar
ts\, historic trades and archival elements to show visitors the process
of rebuilding the history\, landscape\, structure\, and interiors of Cha
rlton’s upscale meeting place\, which served the politically powerful\,
the economically elite and the socially savvy.\nIn the exhibition\, prin
ts of period coffeehouses\, a painting of Nathaniel Walthoe\, who leased
the building to Charlton\, Charlton’s estate inventory and multiple Vir
ginia Gazette advertisements show the development of the social and econ
omic background that created the interpretation guests experience today
at the coffeehouse.\nA treasure trove of archaeological artifacts recove
red during excavation of the site\, such as table wares\, food remains\,
and household implements will illustrate how the coffeehouse functioned
\, the diversity of menus offered to 18th-century patrons and how this i
nformation played a role in what guests see and experience at the site t
oday.\nArchitectural fragments from the original 1750 structure\, drawin
 gs\, models\, and reproduced framing\, locks\, hinges\, plaster\, paint
\, and wallpaper will show the evidence for reconstruction decisions made
and the process of reproducing these elements for the Coffeehouse proje
ct. As the exhibition illustrates the process\, it also demonstrates the
capabilities of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to carry out such
a unique project.\n“This Old Coffeehouse” opens Sept. 25 in the DeWitt W
allace Decorative Arts Museum and will remain on view through December 2
 012. Admission is by Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket\, Museums ti
cket or Good Neighbor Card. “This Old Coffeehouse” is the fourth new exh
ibition opening during the museum’s silver anniversary year.

DESCRIPTION:Stomping\, roaring\, robotic dinosaurs come alive at the Vir
ginia Living Museum with an all-new exciting exhibit from Kokoro\, the i
nventor of robotic dinosaurs. Tremble at a growling T-Rex. Watch a Coryt
hosaurus mother tend her brood. There’s even a nestful of eggs ready to
hatch. See old favorites: Triceratops and Stegosaurus\, and two marine r
eptiles: Mosasaurus and the long-necked Elasmosaurus. Soaring above is t
he bird-like Pteranodon. Kokoro’s dinosaur exhibits entertain and educat
e\, fulfilling the fascination children have as they shudder with excite
ment at the majesty of these creatures. Kokoro dinosaurs don’t just look
like dinosaurs\, they behave like dinosaurs. Motion is amazingly fluid
and lifelike and beautifully complex. These half- to full-size replicas
turn the clock back to recreate the whole Cretaceous world. And -- this
summer only -- a rare albino alligator will join \nour prehistoric frien
ds on exhibit! Included in museum admission\, $17 adults\, $13 children
 3-12. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.

Admission is by Colo
nial Williamsburg admission ticket\, Museums ticket or Good Neighbor Car
 d.

Admission is by Colo

coin worth four reales.\nSeveral firsts in American paper money populat
e the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Seri
es goes for laughs with five classic film comedies.\n\nThe movies will b
e shown at 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Regional Library Theater\, 515 Sco
tland St. Admission is free and reservations are not required. For more
 information\, call 259-4070.\n\nMay 3 – The Paleface (1948)\nIn this wes
tern comedy\, Bob Hope plays a cowardly dentist who is duped by Calamity
Jane (Jane Russell) into helping her capture some dangerous outlaws. Th
is popular film inspired a sequel (Son of Paleface) and its theme song\,
“Buttons and Bows” won the Oscar for Best Original Song.\n\nMay 10 – Sh
e Done Him Wrong (1933)\nA glamorous saloon singer (Mae West) romantical
ly pursues a sober missionary (Cary Grant) in this ribald comedy classic
. The plot is hackneyed but Ms. West’s dialogue is great\, containing so
me of her best-known quips. This movie was a huge box office hit and at
just 65 minutes long has the distinction of being the shortest running f
ilm ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. \n\nMay 17
 – Bullets Over Broadway (1995\, Rated R for language)\nA Broadway playwr
ight’s latest production is beset by problems including a past-her-prime
  diva\, a leading man with a fondness for food\, a mobster’s guttersnipe
girlfriend and her bruiser bodyguard who’s dangerously obsessed with th
e show. Woody Allen wrote and directed this amusing spoof of gangster fi
lms and showbiz dramas that stars John Cusack\, Chazz Palminteri\, Diane
  Wiest\, Jennifer Tilly and Jim Broadbent. \n\nMay 24 – Born Yesterday (
1950)\nA crass businessman (Broderick Crawford) hires an erudite reporte
r (William Holden) to give culture lessons to his ditzy girlfriend (Judy
Holliday). Written by Garson Kanin and directed by George Cukor this se
riocomic film features an excellent performance by Holliday that won the
Best Actress Oscar. \n\nMay 31 – To Be or Not To Be (1942)\nIn occupied
Poland during the Second World War a theatrical troupe employ their act
ing skills to catch a German spy in this terrific comedy written and dir
ected by Ernst Lubitsch. Jack Benny and Carol Lombard star along with Ro
bert Stack\, Sig Ruman\, and Lionel Atwill. NOTE: This was Carole Lombar
d’s last film. She died in a plane crash during a war bond tour before i
 ts theatrical release.
