tract: "I'll be speaking about the changing ways that Indian Buddhist id
ealists construed the relation between objects or appearances and self-c
onsciousness. We'll walk through (rather quickly) about 500 years of int
ellectual history: from the foundation of Buddhist epistemology in Dignā
 ga's writings\, through the work of non-Buddhist critics\, to what is a
properly transcendental account of self-consciousness in reaction to tho
se criticisms. Finally\, we'll dwell on the understudied writings of Rat
nākaraśānti\, wherein that account of self-consciousness is connected to
the unorthodox idealist position that the essence of consciousness is n
ot intentional (Nirākāravāda)\, a position I hope to show is not as unte
nable as it may seem. Finally\, we'll touch briefly on the soteriologica
l implications of all this\, tentatively answering the question: how can
the ordinary mind transform into that of a buddha? My work in this rega
rd is extremely speculative\, so I'm looking forward to conversation. No
previous knowledge of Buddhism or Indian philosophy more generally is n
ecessary (or desired): my hope is to begin a conversation with the Works
hop that I plan to continue over the coming years\, one in which 1000 ye
ar old Sanskrit and Tibetan texts are appreciated and discussed in conte
 mporary philosophical terms."

er Synopsis:\n\nAffirmative action garners intense moral debate in large
part because it invokes and often challenges widespread notions of dese
rvingness. Both opponents and defenders of the policy frequently draw o
n this moral principle in order to fortify their positions. Christians
\, however\, tend to avoid this line of thinking in their discourse on ec
onomic justice because the moral center of their faith relies on grace\,
a principle that stands inherently in tension with deservingness. My p
roject argues that grace need not constitute the only valid approach Chr
istians can take in such moral discussions. A theological concept of de
servingness can serve the dual functions of maintaining an ethical persp
ective informed by grace while acknowledging the moral force possessed b
y desert. This essay illustrates the point by applying a theologically
rendered notion of desert to the issue of affirmative action.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: "My dissertation provides a novel account of pract
ical knowledge and intentional action. The topic of practical knowledge
presents philosophical difficulties because of the modern tendency to p
icture cognition and the will as opposed: the will is concerned with cha
nging the world\, cognition with representing it as it already is. Thus
the expression "practical knowledge" seems as if it can denote merely k
nowledge of a distinctive topic. However\, via an analysis of the teleo
logical and temporal structure of intentional action\, I show that pract
ical knowledge is a distinctive form of knowledge: it is\, in Aquinas' p
hrase\, "the cause of what it understands." Indeed\, my analysis reveal
s that understanding intentional action requires understanding how two k
inds of practical knowledge come together: in doing something intentiona
lly\, the agent (i) knows what he is doing here and now because (ii) he
is exercising general knowledge how to do it\, which takes the form of a
plan or a skill. Moreover\, because plans are ultimately put into acti
on via the exercise of skills\, understanding the possibility of acting
intentionally (or\, what the dissertation shows to come to the same thin
g\, of knowing what you're doing) turns on understanding skill as a rati
onal practical capacity and its exercise as fully intentional action."

tract: "According to the dominant approach in semantics\, proper names a
re semantically-simple referential terms. This view does not sit comfort
ably with the fact that: 1) there are natural languages in which proper
names always occur in the syntactic place of a predicate and 2) even in
a language like English in which proper names seem to occur as simple re
ferential expressions (as in `Alfred is in the kitchen baking pies') the
y also occur in the role of a predicate (e.g. in `Three di fferent Alfre
ds have fallen down this well'). There is a strong temptation\, given th
e supposed simplicity and power of the orthodox approach\, to try to exp
lain away these recalcitrant phenomena (perhaps by positing an ambiguity
). I argue that this would be a mistake. The basic meaning of a proper n
ame is predicative - `Alfred' expresses the property of bearing the name
`Alfred'. I develop an account of these metalinguistic properties which
both dispels the air of circularity associated with this approach and e
xplains the role that proper names play in discourse. The upshot is a ne
w appreciation of the challenges\, as well as the potential insights\, a
ssociated with fully integrating traditional questions in the philosophy
of language with theoretical linguistics\, and a new conception of the
traditional philosophical puzzles associated with names."

tract: My dissertation explores the concept of internalism about reason-
attributions (i.e. “N has reason to \,” where “N” is the name of a pers
on and “” an action verb). The central proponent of this position in c
ontemporary metaethics is Bernard Williams\, though I believe his most c
entral point – that the denial of internalism (i.e. externalism) renders
the propositional content\, and thus the truth-conditions\, of reason-a
ttributions obscure – has been largely overlooked in the critical respon
ses to him. I undertake a close reading of these articles in an effort
to reveal its centrality to Williams’s analysis\, and to provide a limit
ed defense of it. Most critics instead take issue with Williams’s argum
ent that “external” reasons cannot be motivationally efficacious in thos
e to whom they are attributed\, whereas they must be able to be in order
to be attributed with any truth. I respond by developing a conception
of internalism that does not entail this\, and\, further\, by arguing th
at the premise on which it is based\, often called the “explanatory cons
traint” on reason-attributions\, threatens circularity in the account of
their truth-conditions and renders their normativity unintelligible. I
do this partly by way of a discussion of a passage in Frege concerning
psychologism (and what I see as John McDowell’s misappropriation of it i
n his critique of Williams). Finally\, Christine Korsgaard’s 1996 book
The Sources of Normativity develops what can be read as a form of intern
alism that is nevertheless opposed to the one I defend here in more or l
ess every detail. I conclude with a critique of the argument of this bo
ok\, developing a few advantages I take my conception to have over hers.
