S alumni/ae lecture. Sexually explicit vulgar verse emerged in Renaissa
nce France just as a transcendent\, romantic rhetoric of love developed
in poetry as well. These poetic forms\, apparently at odds\, nonetheless
rely on a common vocabulary base and set of syntactical assumptions. F
rench poets came to believe that Petrarch lied about the chaste quality
of his love for Laura\, and concerns over Petrarch’s veracity spawned a
range of highly sexualized responses. French poets insisted instead tha
t consummation was a marker of emotional and physical authenticity. Art
iculating sexual fulfillment was a form of masculine honesty. But withi
n the context of the agonistic competition for patronage and to assert p
oetic subjectivity\, anxieties about masculinity emerged. Negotiating b
etween claims of corporeal truth and knowledge of personal inadequacy cr
eated a highly charged sexual politics around the development of subject
ivity and masculinity as a function of distinctly French poetic practice
 s.

poet Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867) has been labeled the very icon of m
odernity\, the scribe of the modern city\, and an observer of an emergin
g capitalist culture. Seeing Double reconsiders this iconic literary fig
ure and his fraught relationship with the nineteenth-century world by ex
amining the way in which he viewed the increasing dominance of modern li
fe. In doing so\, it revises some of our most common assumptions about t
he unresolved tensions that emerged in Baudelaire’s writing during a tim
e of political and social upheaval.

bbs and Howe return for a performance of their third and most recent rel
ease Frolic Architecture. Frolic drops the listener into a soundworld th
at germinates wildly from this most multiple and heterogeneous of Howe's
celebrated collage poems. For long stretches\, it is impossible to sepa
rate Howe's real-time performance of her fragment-strewn text from Grubb
 s's further deformations\, scatterings\, and layerings. These aberrant v
ocalizations are placed in a landscape in which individual pitches pulse
autonomously within thick chords: gravel and cicadas duet. This concert

ent of English\, Committee on Creative Writing. This concert will take p
