The Integrity of Fiction: Imaginative Literature in a Culture of Realism
Practical concerns tend to place a premium on informational reading to the disadvantage of aesthetic education. This familiar trade-off in current debates is hardly new. Similar concerns defined cultural production during the rapid industrialization of Germany in the 19th century. This talk explores the durability of fiction within a scientific-realist setting through the problem of poetic realism in the work of the author Theodor Storm (1817-1888), including his reception in social theory.

Two very different visions of what America is and where it should go dominate the nation's current political landscape. This is bigger than Democrats vs. Republicans. One vision fueled the Obama movement in 2007-08 and emphasizes an inclusive America that transcends barriers of race, sexuality, religion, and other traditional identity markers. The other vision emerged in 2009-10 and trumpets a model of economic and social conservatism that its supporters suggest was the basis for the nation's Founders. To understand these perspectives is to understand who will be the Republican Party's presidential nominee and, ultimately, what the 2012 presidential election means.

Please join us for the 2012 UW Libraries Blom Lecture with Stepanie Coontz, who will present Madmen, Working Girls, and Desperate Housewives: American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s.

Coontz teaches history and family studies at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, and is Director of Research and Public Education for the Council on Contemporary Families, which she chaired from 2001-04. Coontz is the author of A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s (Basic Books, 2011) and the award-winning Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage (Viking Press, 2005).
