We’re reaching out to inform you that VBLL will be having FREE (yes, FREE as in “no cost”!) off-season clinics for softball this year! All ages, all divisions, all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

If you’re looking to improve on parts of your game, or trying to learn new skills, or just want to come out and have fun, these clinics should fit the bill. We’re hoping for a great turnout, so spread the word!! If you have friends in the area that have never played softball and want to try it out, bring ‘em along!

Previous VBLL registration is NOT a requirement!

The Centuries of Art @ Your Library art lecture series resumes for 2012 at the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St., with two illustrated talks on consecutive Mondays: Japanese Culture During the Edo Period, and Egyptomania!

On Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. art historian Rosemary Smith will discuss the subjects, techniques, and aesthetic principles of the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Japan during the Edo Period, a time of shoguns, samurai and Kabuki.

The following week, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Celeste Fetta, Adult Programs Manager at the Virginia Museum of Find Arts (VMFA) will talk about what Napoleon and King Tut had in common (besides being the same height). They both fueled the Egyptian look in decorative arts and culture, spawning sphinx tables, pyramid clocks and Cleopatra eyes. Discover how these eclectic objects came to be part of the multi-century craze known as Egyptomania!

David Lean directed this sterling version of Charles Dickens’ 1860 novel about a young man’s adventures in Victorian England. The great cast includes John Mills, Jean Simmons, Alec Guinness, Martita Hunt and Valerie Hobson. The movie won Oscars for Art Direction and Guy Green’s evocative cinematography.

Feb. 9 – The Letter (1940)
Bette Davis does stellar work as a Malaysian plantation owner’s wife on trial for murder. This steamy melodrama, based on a short story by W. Somerset Maugham, was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Directed by William Wyler, the movie costars Herbert Marshall, James Stephenson and Gale Sondergaard as a particularly menacing native woman.

Feb. 16 – Les Miserables (1935)
Victor Hugo’s epic novel is well served in producer Darryl F. Zanuck’s adaptation which features Fredric March as Jean Valjean and Charles Laughton as that relentless pursuer of criminals, Inspector Javert. John Beal, Rochelle Hudson and Cedric Hardwicke costar under the direction of Richard Boleslawski. This is a non-musical version of the story.

Feb. 23 – The Heiress (1949)
Olivia de Havilland is heartbreaking as a shy heiress being wooed by a man (Montgomery Clift) whom her father (Ralph Richardson) believes to be a fortune hunter. This first-rate film, directed by William Wyler, was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning four of them including the Best Actress Oscar for de Havilland.

Constitutional Conversations, the award-winning series of programs about the Constitution and Bill of Rights, examines the structure of the Constitution’s protection of civil rights and civil liberties in the next session of this eight-month long series. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 in the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland St. Law students lead the sessions, which feature age-appropriate discussions for students and adults. This workshop will explore how the various provisions of the Constitution and Bill of Rights protect our most precious civil rights and civil liberties. The text of the Constitution contains few provisions concerning individual liberties. In part, this was because the framers believed that an enumeration of rights was unnecessary. The government they had created was one of limited powers. Government officials were not authorized to violate basic liberties. Additionally, many framers believed that the enumeration of some rights would lead individuals to believe those not listed were not protected. Despite this, a Bill of Rights, protecting individual rights, was ultimately drafted and ratified.
