Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program for 2012

The Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) is a voluntary program of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) whose purpose is to protect agricultural lands by limiting non-agricultural uses. NRCS partners with approved State, local, Tribal, and non-profit entities who arrange for the purchase of development rights through conservation easements on private lands. The entity holds and manages these conservation easements in perpetuity.

Rhode Island NRCS accepts applications from entities on a continuous basis throughout the year. The entity must be deemed eligible before any parcels submitted by that entity will be considered. All required parcel data must be included or the parcel will be rejected.

All funds will be used to reimburse the entities for up to 50 percent of the purchase price of the conservation easement on approved parcels. All parcels are ranked individually on their own merit. Funds will be awarded to the highest ranked eligible parcels through a statewide competitive process.

As you no doubt recall, Watershed Counts reported on flow and Impervious cover in 2011. In this workshop, the aim is to consider additional information and evaluate presentation details for 2012.

Open Space Indicator, Thursday February 23 from 9 AM - 1 PM at the Narragansett Bay Commission Corporate Headquarters. How much open space is protected in the Narragansett Bay Region? Are we protecting river buffers? Providing access to coastal areas? Do people have easy access to open spaces? The Watershed Counts Open Space metric will look at these questions. Your contributions are vital as we explore and discuss our findings.

Watershed Counts revisits Climate Change to decide if new information should be included in the indicator presentation for 2012. Climate Change, Thursday March 8 from 10 AM - noon, place TBD.

Watershed Counts presentation at the RI State House, April 24 in conjunction with ECRI Lobby Day. Details to follow. All partners who can attend are encouraged to do so.

Winter is a wonderful time of year to go bird watching, improve your naturalist skills, or simply hike with less worries of mosquitoes and ticks. Colorful ducks congregate along RI shores, rare birds are often sighted after seasonal storms, and it is also owl breeding season. This is the best time to hear owl hoots and screeches during the early evening hours as they search for mates and defend their territories. To celebrate the wonders of nature in winter, Norman Bird Sanctuary is offering several educational opportunities.

If you’re interested in winter birds and don’t want to travel, NBS is offering an Owl Prowl on Thursday, January 26th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Sanctuary. This program starts indoors where you will learn about the different species of owls in Rhode Island, their unique adaptations, and then you will be introduced to one of our resident birds-of-prey. Following the presentation, we will head out on the trails in search of owls. We will make frequent stops to listen for their calls and to participate in some fun, night hike activities. This program is appropriate for ages 8 and up and registration is required. The cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Did you know that frogs & toads are disappearing at an alarming rate across the globe? Get involved by becoming a FrogWatch Volunteer and help scientists keep an eye on Rhode Island frogs & toads.

Due to a number of factors such as habitat loss, pollution & disease, more than one-third of amphibian species are faced with possible extinction. This has led to what many conservationists call a global amphibian crisis. Though there don’t appear to be any immediate threats to the species found locally in New England, the monitoring & data collected through the FrogWatch program will help conservationists to keep tabs on these populations and react to any decline much more quickly.

A test on frog and toad calls is required to complete certification as a FrogWatch volunteer.

The South Kingstown indoor winter market is an outgrowth of the South Kingstown farmers’ market, Rhode Island’s oldest and longest continuously operating farmers’ market that operates at URI’s East Farm and at Marina Park from May through October. This indoor winter market will feature a cornucopia of locally grown and produced products, including:
■ Apples, cranberries, and seasonal vegetables such as butternut squash, turnips, potatoes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, brussel sprouts, parsnips, and tomatoes;
■ Farm fresh turkeys, USDA certified grass fed beef, and Fortuna’s sausage;

Speaker: Dr. Isaac Ginis (URI GSO) is a hurricane expert and will discuss the current understanding of global climate change impacts in Rhode Island.

How can ecosystem-based management be used in fisheries?
Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Collie (URI GSO) will discuss management tools and approaches used to optimize total fish yield, provide long-term economic viability, conserve biodiversity, and maintain the health of an ecosystem.

What are nitrogen cycling response to climate change and what does that mean for biological communities?
Speakers: Dr. Robinson Fulweiler (Boston University), Dr. Jeremy Rich (Brown University), Lindsey Fields (URI GSO PhD candidate) will discuss nitrogen cycling dynamics in response to a changing climate, impacts of current reduction efforts on phytoplankton growth, and a broad understanding of how Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound respond to nutrients.

How are humans responding and adapting to climate change?
Speaker: Dr. James Prochaska, Director of the Cancer Prevention Center (URI) will discuss efforts of climate change adaptation in implementing actions and behavior changes at both individual and community levels.

Can we protect oysters from disease?
Speaker: Dr. David Rowley (URI Biomedical Sciences) will discuss challenges of bacterial disease outbreaks to aquaculture production and new pathways for combating disease outbreaks in crustaceans and bivalves through the use of probiotics - a method that uses live microorganims to benefit the host organism.

How can sediment cores reconstruct the past?
Speaker: Dr. Warren Prell (Brown University) will discuss he is using sediment cores from Narragansett Bay to reconstruct a historical timeline of biological response over a 500-year time span to recent global warming trends, the urbanization and industrialization of the bay watershed, and the onset of major land-use changes.

What do we know about the geological and physical aspects of Narragansett Bay and RI Sound?
Speakers: Dr. John King (URI GSO), Dr. Christopher Kincaid (URI GSO), Dr. David Ullman (URI GSO) will discuss how seafloor mapping and circulation modeling have expanded our understanding of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound's geological structure and physical dynamics that impact local ecology.

Why do people keep bees? It's a good hobby for people who love nature and enjoy watching and learning about bees and the flowers they pollinate and gather nectar from. It insures that you will always have good pollination in your gardens. Some people keep bees because they love honey! Some people even keep bees because they have arthritis and wish to get stung to alleviate arthritic symptoms.

The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association teaches beginner beekeeping classes every year in February and March.

RI Sierra Club Outing: White Mountains Overnight Excursion

Join the RI Sierra Club on a overnight wintertime outing to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We will be using an Appalachian Trail shelter as our weekend headquarters to explore the trails. Bundle up and see the snowy (we hope) beauty of a New England winter in the mountains.

Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 6am on Saturday to caravan. Travel time to the White Mountains is approximately 4-5 hours. Attendees will have the option of staying one or two nights, and will arrive back in RI late on the evening of the day they choose to head home. We will be staying in the Zealand Falls Hut, a hike in/hike out, heated Appalachian Trail shelter. Hut reservations are required in advance, so please contact Ben Jones (outings@risierraclub.org) if you are interested in attending. Accomidations will cost $44/night/person.

IMPORTANT NOTE: this outing will be more strenuous then a typical RI Sierra Club outing and is not suitable for children.

Meet at Bristol Ferry Landing to go to Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Prudence Island, RI
Saturday, February 18, 2012, 9:45am – 4:30pm

Come and explore Prudence Island with a chance to see seals at one of the best haul-out spots in Narragansett Bay. You will also learn about ecological research happening in and around the Bay through the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve. Set out for the south end of the island and a popular seal haul-out at low tide. View the seals using spotting scopes and enjoy a brief presentation about the seals' life cycle and migration to Narragansett Bay. After viewing seals and having lunch at the Center, we will tour in our van with stops to visit the island's one-room schoolhouse, cultural and historic sites, salt marshes and beaches.

The day begins at 9:45am with a half-hour ferry ride leaving Bristol at 10:00am to Prudence Island. You will be greeted at the ferry landing by an educator from the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve based on Prudence Island. A short van ride will bring us to the Research Reserve's 'Lab' Learning Center where we can store lunches in our fridge, use the facilities. At the end of the day you will return to the Prudence Island ferry landing to catch the 4:00pm ferry back to Bristol and arriving there by 4:30pm.

What to Bring: Roughly $7.00 for the round-trip ferry ticket (cash or check only), binoculars, camera, a packed lunch, water bottle, insect and tick repellent, comfortable footwear and warm, waterproof clothes in case of inclement weather.

The South Kingstown Indoor Winter Farmers’ Market will open at the Peacedale Mill Complex, located at 1425 Kingstown Road (Route 108) in Peacedale and will be open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Market is closed on 12/25 and 1/1/12.

The South Kingstown indoor winter market is an outgrowth of the South Kingstown farmers’ market, Rhode Island’s oldest and longest continuously operating farmers’ market that operates at URI’s East Farm and at Marina Park from May through October. This indoor winter market will feature a cornucopia of locally grown and produced products, including:
■ Apples, cranberries, and seasonal vegetables such as butternut squash, turnips, potatoes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, brussel sprouts, parsnips, and tomatoes;
■ Farm fresh turkeys, USDA certified grass fed beef, and Fortuna’s sausage;
■ Matunuck oysters, steamers, little necks, and fresh fish when available;

Our past winter walks have discovered deer and fox tracks in the snow; crossbills in the pines; otters, muskrats, and even bald eagles on the frozen pond; and a Northern Three-Toed Woodpecker in 1991. We'll finish by warming up around the stove with a steaming bowl of vegetarian chili. Start wishing for fresh snow now (good for tracks), only not as much as in some years!

February School Vacation Week

School's Out! Come to Audubon for a week of fun for all ages. Special programs and activities are available each day and are free with admission.

Nature crafts will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm each day, as well as a nature story at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm and animal interviews at 11:30 am. Registration is not required.

Special programs for children are also available each day at 1:30 p.m. February 20: Eco-Games: Puzzles, Oceanopoly, nature card games and more will be set out for you and your family to freely enjoy at your leisure. An Audubon educator will be on hand to help out and join the fun.

February 21: Snow Tracking: Bundle up and head out with an Audubon educator to look for signs of animals in the winter. You never know what we will find!

February 22: Owl Detectives: What do owls eat, where do they live, what makes them special? Be an owl detective and find out! This program will include an owl pellet dissection. *There will be a $3.00 per owl pellet fee to help cover costs.

February 23: It's cold out there! Join Audubon and conduct some experiments to find out how animals survive in the winter!

February 24: Native Tales and Explorations: Winter is a great time to snuggle up and hear some nature stories. These unique stories will be told (not read) by Audubon educators and will include artifacts to explore.

URI February Vacation Family Days
