Literacy Council Needs Volunteer Tutors

The Literacy Council
982 N. Main St.
Rockford, IL
Monday, February 6, 2012

The Literacy Council is looking for more volunteer tutors to be matched with adults who need to improve reading skills. According to Molly Lovelock, Director of Finances and Grants, “Tutors are our greatest resource. We couldn’t do our work without them.”

The Literacy Council matches adults who want to read better with volunteer tutors who instruct them in phonics, reading comprehension, and writing. To become a tutor, you must be over the age of 18, have a high school diploma, possess good communication skills, flexibility, patience, and have the willingness to meet with a student for two hours a week for a minimum of one year.

Anyone who wants to become a volunteer tutor is invited to sign up for The Literacy Council’s free Tutor Workshop series. The Council will be offering an online workshop for the first time beginning February 7th. The next volunteer tutor workshop series, consisting of six classes, will be held Mondays and Wednesdays beginning February 9th at The Literacy Council, 982 N. Main St., in Rockford.

Volunteers will learn techniques for teaching reading and English as a Second Language to adults. After attendance at the workshop, tutors will be matched with a learner for one-on-one instruction for two hours each week for a minimum of one year. They can work with their learners in Rockford, Belvidere, or Loves Park.

Individuals interested in volunteering their time to share the joy of reading with an adult are asked to please contact The Literacy Council today at 815-963-READ. More information and the opportunity to register for the workshop are available at www.theliteracycouncil.org.

More info: www.theliteracycouncil.org

Literacy Council Needs Volunteer Tutors

The Literacy Council
982 N. Main St.
Rockford, IL
Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Tuesday, February 7, 2012

WINNNEBAGO COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT
ANNOUNCES ANNUAL TREE SALE

Winnebago County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual tree sale is under way for 2012. Each year the District sells bare root tree, evergreen and shrub seedlings and transplants to increase efforts to provide energy conservation and/or habitat cover for wildlife in the rural setting. These starter seedlings and transplants are an investment in the future.

DEADLINE TO ORDER IS MARCH 30, 2012.

Evergreens available include White Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce, Concolor Fir, Norway Spruce, Canadian Hemlock, American Arborvitae and White Spruce.

Shade trees available include Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Northern Red Oak, Black Cherry, White Oak, Burr Oak, River Birch and Chokecherry.

Shrubs available include Common Lilac, Black Chokeberry, Juneberry Serviceberry, Silky Dogwood, Common Witchhazel and Pagoda Dogwood.

Trees are sold in bundle sizes of 5, 25 and 100 with prices ranging from $9 - $130 for the different species and sizes.

Also available Evergreen Package (a variety of 20 trees) for $34 and a Shrub Package (a variety of 9 shrubs) for $17.

The District also offers for sale “Right Start” Fertilizer Packets to give seedlings the right starting nutrients in the right place at the right time. Tree Protectors are available to improve the survivability of hardwood trees. Tree protectors increase growth and lower maintenance costs. They are designed to only be used on hardwood trees, not on shrubs or evergreens. Vispore Tree Mats are also available to help protect from weed growth around the tree. The mat provides each tree, evergreen or shrub 9 square feet of weed free soil. The mat controls weeds, yet allows water to reach the plant.

Rain barrels and conservation books are also available.

In addition to energy conservation and wildlife habitat, trees serve a number of other purposes. Ten mature trees remove approximately 5 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually. They also dilute polluted air with fresh oxygen. One hundred mature trees catch about 250,000 gallons of rainwater each year. Trees planted appropriately can save up to 25% of annual cooling costs and save 10 to 25% of energy used for heating. In 40 years, the average tree returns $2.70 in benefits for every $1 of investment.

Trees will be available for pick-up in late April.

Tree sale order forms are available by calling the District office at (815) 965-2392, x3, or on the website www.winnebagoswcd.org.

All of the evergreens, shade trees and shrubs are to be used for conservation purposes only and shall not be used for ornamental purposes or landscaping.

More info: www.winnebagoswcd.org

Literacy Council Needs Volunteer Tutors

The Literacy Council
982 N. Main St.
Rockford, IL
Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Wednesday, February 8, 2012

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Thursday, February 9, 2012

Shanta Nurullah (spoken word artist)

Rock Valley College Student Center Atrium
Thursday, February 9, 2012, 6:30pm

Shanta will perform From Anansi to Brer Rabbit - Trickster Tales from Africa and the Americas on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rock Valley College Student Center Atrium.

This event is free and open to the public. Event co-sponsored by RVC Upward Bound & Illinois Humanities Council.

In traditional African societies, the storyteller was often the historian, as well as the culture-bearer. West Africa’s most vivid, intriguing, and enduring character is the trickster, Anansi. Follow the travels of Anansi from Africa to the west, where Anansi’s antics and themes are found in Brer Rabbit tales, often told on southern plantations. These stories of small spiders and crafty rabbits served to entertain and empower those who were using all of their spiritual and mental resources to survive their oppressive conditions. Shanta invites audiences to listen, laugh, and ponder the role of the trickster in folkloric traditions.

Shanta Nurullah has been performing as a musician, storyteller, and actor since 1972, presenting concerts and workshops in educational and cultural institutions across the country and abroad.
Literacy Council Needs Volunteer Tutors

The Literacy Council
982 N. Main St.
Rockford, IL
Friday, February 10, 2012

Winnebago SWCD Rain Barrels

N/A
Friday, February 10, 2012

Isn’t it time you harvest your storm water? Water conservation is becoming increasingly important and you can do your part by harvesting rain water with a rain barrel. The Winnebago County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is currently taking orders for 55-gallon food-quality plastic rain barrels. These barrels were previously used to ship pickled food overseas and come with a garden hose size spigot at the bottom, two overflow spigots and a removable screen mesh lid. These paintable barrels come in an assortment of colors including grey, black, terra cotta and blue.

Rain barrels can be purchased for $70.00 each, along with several accessories that make for easy installation and maintenance including diverters, adapters and wooden pedestals. Order forms are available on the District website at www.winnebagoswcd.org, or by contacting Jessica at jessica-ra-swcd@comcast.net or at (815) 965-2392 ext. 3. Order deadline is Friday, March 30th, 2012. Rain barrels must be picked up Thursday, April 5th, 2012 from 1pm to 4pm or with tree sale pick-up if you are a tree sale customer.

More info: www.winnebagoswcd.org

Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Friday, February 10, 2012

Ice Age Mammals

BURPEE MUSEUM
737 N. Main Street
Rockford,, IL 61103
Saturday, February 11, 2012

Ice Age Mammals will open at the Burpee Museum on October 8th and run through April 29, 2012.

This is the United States first showing of this Canadian Museum of Nature’s Traveling Exhibit. It is exciting that it is opening at the Burpee Museum in Rockford and is presented by BMO Harris Bank.

We invite you to chill out with our new travelling exhibition on ice-age mammals. This exhibition features dozens of real fossils, touchable casts and specimens along with really cool interactive displays. Dramatic murals by Yukon-based palaeoartist George "Rinaldino" Teichmann round out your experience of Ice Age Mammals. The exhibition focuses on ice-age mammals, climate change, extinction and human impact on climate and species.

One very cool exhibit is the mounted Mastodon Skeleton. The mastodons were about the same size as the elephants and the mammoths, but more muscular and most species had fur.

During the last Ice Age, there were many large, interesting mammals, like the saber-toothed cats, giant ground sloths, mastodons, and mammoths. These animals have long since gone extinct and are known mostly from fossils, from frozen, mummified carcasses, and even from ancient cave drawings. We will have skulls from many of these animals including: Muskox, Badger, American Lion and Scimitar Cat as part of the exhibit.

The Ice Age Mammal exhibit was produced by the Canadian Museum of Nature in partnership with the Montreal Science Centre, the Yukon Beringia Intrepretive Centre and the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology.

We are also partnering with the Cherryvale Mall again for this exhibit.

The Exhibit will be displayed throughout the Museum and will be included with regular admission to the Musuem.

Admission for Members of the Museum will be free.

A family membership to the Burpee Museum is $70.00.

Non-Member admission: $10.00
$9.00 children 4-12 years old.

Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Saturday, February 11, 2012

Bat Boy, the Musical

Rock Valley College Studio Theatre
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 2pm

The Weekly World News 1992 story about Bat Boy, a half-boy, half-bat found living in a cave inspired writers Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming to write a stage adaptation. Bat Boy learns to speak from his adoptive family, yearns for acceptance and tries to join society, only to face hatred and violence from a town that fears him, and jealous rage from his foster father. The play deals with serious themes, but often punctures the most serious moments with slapstick, surrealism, camp-horror and irony.

Price - Low: $14
Price - High: $16
Directed By: Michael P.
Annual Tree Sale

Rockford
Sunday, February 12, 2012
