Tallulah!

Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was born in downtown Huntsville on January 31, 1902. After her mother died, when Tallulah was only three weeks old, she and her sister went to Jasper, AL to live with their grandparents, as their father was too distraught to care for them. Tallulah’s rebellious nature appeared early and at the young age of ten she was enrolled in a convent school in New York. Her career began at the age of 17 and took her to Paris, London, New York and Hollywood. She was a serious contender for the part of Scarlett O’Hara for the 1936 movie Gone with the Wind, but lost the role because she was considered too scandalous for the part. Her response was, “They don’t know what scandalous is. If they want scandal then that’s what they will get!”
Get to know the ‘darling’ of Huntsville through Tallulah! the Spring mansion exhibit, February 1 – April 15. Although Tallulah never had a major role in a movie, she certainly left her mark on the stage and in Hollywood, and the campier the role the bett…

Southern Comfort: Regional Photography from the Collection
Museums, Studios & Galleries
Through February 26, 2012
Southern Comfort will present selected photographs from the Museum’s collection that underscore the rich history of the South and tell compelling stories about its unique people, places and traditions. Many were added to the collection in the 1980s and early 1990s through a series of original exhibitions curated by local photographic archivist and historian Frances Robb, wife of former Museum director David Robb. Featured artists will include William Christenberry, Kathryn Tucker Windham, Pinky Bass, James Morris, John Reese, and Caroline Davis.
As the nation’s most culturally distinct region, the American South has long been a magnet for artistic exploration and documentation. Many artists have chosen the medium of photography as a vehicle to convey their unique impressions and experiences of the region, because of the camera’s ability to so vividly record reality.

Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table - "Messengers of Death: How the Press Reported the Civil War"
Downtown Huntsville
Thomas R. Flagel, noted author , historian, and speaker, and professor of American History at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee, will talk about "Messengers of Death: How the Press Reported the Civil War". The 1860 Census (the eighth census) reported a total US population of almost 31.5 million. Approximately 71% were in what came to be the Union. Each of the Confederate states saw active combat operations at some time during the war, as did several of the Union states. Most families, North and South, were personally touched by the war. There was no radio, television, Internet, email, or social media to provide 24 hour real-time coverage as we do today. There were, however, almost 175 newspapers across the country.
So, citizens turned to their daily and weekly newspapers, gleaning every line for shreds of truth amidst the tangle of rumors. For them, it was in these grey pages where history literally unfolded. What did they see, what were they told, and what did they believe? Mr. Flag…

It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures.

Alice in Wonderland
Performing Arts
SHOW WILL RUN FEB 9, 10 & 11 @ 7PM
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, and its narrative course and structure have been enormously influential, especially in the fantasy genre.

Tallulah!
Museums, Studios & Galleries

The Museum is pleased to be presenting the first in a new series of recurring exhibitions focused on contemporary art with shared sensibilities. Connections: Marilyn Murphy/Bob Trotman features two critically acclaimed artists who, although working with different media, both convey a sense of dislocation and loss in their works.

Their art pieces focus on retro-attired figures who are caught in unusual circumstances.
