The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark

In 1798—more than five years before he led the epic western journey that would make him and Meriwether Lewis national heroes—William Clark set off by flatboat from his Louisville, Kentucky home with a cargo of tobacco and furs to sell downriver in Spanish New Orleans. He also carried with him a leather-trimmed journal used to record notes about his exploits. In The Unknown Travels and Dubious Pursuits of William Clark, a new book by author Jo Ann Trogdon, she reveals William Clark’s highly questionable activities during the years before his famous journey west of the Mississippi. Delving into the details of Clark’s diary and ledger entries from this period, Trogdon investigates evidence linking Clark to a series of plots, often called the Spanish Conspiracy, in which corrupt officials sought to line their pockets with Spanish money and separate Kentucky from the United States. Join us as Ms. Trogdon sheds new light on the complex life of one of our country’s most intriguing icons. City: Jefferson City. Additional Event Information: Free Admission. Kids/Family Friendly. It Ends Here: The Last Missouri Vigilante

In early January 1904, a reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch traveled to Oklahoma City to meet with washed-up relic of the Wild West, Edward Capehart O’Kelley. During their meeting, O’Kelley struggled to stay sober while discussing his relationship with the outlaw Jesse James, a childhood friend. He described how he once had an opportunity to join the James gang, but declined, opting instead for a career as a Colorado lawman. During his career, his violent tactics earned him the reputation of a man with a quick temper, ready gun and penchant for bending the law to suit his needs. It was there, in Creede, Colorado, that O’Kelley met Robert Ford, known to all as the assassin of Jesse James. Egged on by local miners, O’Kelley murdered Robert Ford to avenge the death of his old friend. In It Ends Here, author Joe Johnston draws on the reporter’s accounts to tell O’Kelley’s tragic story. Join us as he unravels this circular tale of frontier vigilantism and ponders America’s progress beyond such violence. City: Jefferson City. Additional Event Information: Free Admission. Ice Cream Splash

The second annual Ice Cream Splash hosted by the Jefferson City Cultural Arts Foundation will be held July 15, 2016 in downtown Jefferson City, MO. Proceeds from the Ice Cream Splash will go toward funding a Splash Park in Jefferson City. A Splash Park is a free recreation area, in a public spot, for water play that has little or no standing water. This attraction will provide another venue for free outdoor entertainment to the Jefferson City and surrounding area community. “Last year's event was such a huge success, with over 1300 attendees,” said Natalie Newville, Marketing Chair of the Ice Cream Splash Committee. “As of February 2016, we have raised $35,000.
