Texas Rangers Storybook Series: Children's Author Richard Michelson

Richard Michelson is a poet and a children’s book author who has read his works in India, Eastern Europe and now Arlington! In January 2009, his book As Good As Anybody: Martin Luther King and Abraham Joshua Heschel’s Amazing March Toward Freedom, was awarded the Sydney Taylor Book Award Gold Medal from the Association of Jewish Libraries, and A is for Abraham, was awarded the Silver Medal. This is the first time in the award’s 41-year history that one author has been honored with their top two awards. This event is free and open to the public and allows families to meet some of the world’s most famous children’s book authors and illustrators. The event begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Diamond Club at the Ballpark with the author/illustrator to start at 5:30 p.m. Books will be available for purchase and families will have the opportunity to meet the author or illustrator and have their book signed. African American Film Nights at the DeSoto Public Library

In February, the DeSoto Public Library will present a series of African American feature films produced between 1935 and 1956. The movies are part of a special collection of the G. William Jones Film & Video Collection from the Hamon Arts Library at Southern Methodist University. These films offer a unique African American perspective in American motion picture history. The program is free, but you must pick up a ticket from the library, and you must have the ticket with you when you come to the movie. Due to limited seating, moviegoers cannot be admitted without having their tickets with them. The movies will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be shown in the library. ‘MIGRATION MATTERS’ SERIES TO EXAMINE COMPLEX BORDER ISSUES

“The Route of Death: Migrants, Massacres and Cartels” will feature a screening of Una Ruta Nada Santa (“An Unholy Road”), which tells the stories of two survivors of a horrendous crime that occurred in April 2011, when a group of undocumented migrants crossed Mexico on a bus bound for the U.S. and only a few miles from their destination, 72 were massacred by a drug cartel. After the screening, a panel discussion will feature the film’s cinematographer and reporter Moises Gomez, its director, Hector Hugo Jimenez, and SMU Assistant Chief of Police Jim Walters, who worked on the case as director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Southern Border Initiative. Vintage Valentine Tea and One Day Postal Cancellation

The tea recipes are being checked, the silver polished and the Irving Heritage Society Sweetheart is secretly selected as the organization prepares for their annual Vintage Valentine Tea. This event is a recreation of the 1914 Valentine housewarming party given by Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Schulze after the house was built in 1912. The Heritage House is located at 303 South O’Connor and is a Recorded Texas State Historic Landmark. The tea is held 2pm – 4pm on Sunday, February 12th. Guests are welcome to attend.
