21st Century Consort presents Multiplicity

The acclaimed 21st Century Consort continues their 2011–12 season with performances that celebrate exhibitions on view in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The concept of repetition that is so integral to printmaking is also evident in contemporary classical music. In this concert, the music of Conlon Nancarrow, Robert Beaser, David Froom, Mark Kuss, and Dan Visconti is illustrated with images from the Multiplicity exhibition.

Behind-the-Scenes Introduction to the Lunder Conservation Center

The Lunder Conservation Center is a special facility of several laboratories shared by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery where visitors can watch behind glass walls conservators examining, treating, and preserving artwork.
Today, in this behind-the-scenes introduction to the Lunder Conservation Center, learn how museum conservators use science, art history, and skilled hands to preserve objects in both museums' collections.

Whether he’s tickling the ivories or pumping his accordion, Little Red (Tom Corradino) creates a party atmosphere with his classic Louisiana sound. He is accompanied by Carol Arthur on steel pans, Dave Petersen on bass, Jon Danforth on drums, and Harry and Allen Rado on guitar.

Behind-the-Scenes Introduction to the Lunder Conservation Center

The Lunder Conservation Center is a special facility of several laboratories shared by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery where visitors can watch behind glass walls conservators examining, treating, and preserving artwork.
Today, in this behind-the-scenes introduction to the Lunder Conservation Center, learn how museum conservators use science, art history, and skilled hands to preserve objects in both museums' collections.

A Not So Still Life peers into the kaleidoscopic mind of Ginny Ruffner. The documentary explores Ruffner’s journey from her childhood in South Carolina to her emergence as a world-renowned artist. The film also highlights her influences, including Dale Chihuly, Graham Nash, and Tom Robbins. Directed by Karen Stanton.
After the screening, Ruffner will participate in a discussion about the film and will sign copies of the DVD (available for purchase onsite).

Award-winning composer Darin Atwater returns to American Art premiering an original work, Sound Theory, drawing upon various genres including, jazz, classical, and American roots music. Atwater is the artistic director and founder of the renowned Soulful Symphony.

Renowned illustrator and contributor to The New Yorker, Maira Kalman will speak about a strange and haunting Diane Arbus photograph (Untitled (8) (1970–71)) of five adults in Halloween costumes.

Experimentation and Innovation in American Painting Techniques

Materials and techniques used by American painters are an important but largely unknown part of the history of American art. In American Painters on Technique: The Colonial Period to 1860, the first comprehensive study of this topic, art conservators Lance Mayer and Gay Myers draw on three decades of research to compile and analyze first-person descriptions of American painters at work. Consulting a variety of sources from letters and journals to shopkeepers’ bills, Mayer and Myers explore the experimentation and innovation of artists like Benjamin West, Thomas Sully, and Rembrandt Peale.

Steinway Series with Christopher Atzinger

Works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Judith Lang Zaimont are featured in this concert by American pianist Christopher Atzinger. Praised in Gramophone for his “abundant energy, powerful fingers, big sound, and natural musicality,” Atzinger has performed throughout Europe and North America. He teaches at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
Steinway Series features the museum’s Steinway Concert Grand model D piano. Free tickets are available in the G Street Lobby thirty minutes before the program.
