Faculty Dance Concert: Name Day

Dance Within the Armenian Gregorian tradition, almost every day of the calendar year is devoted to a saint or martyr in the Christian faith. If someone is named after one of those figures, that day becomes his or her "name day" and is traditionally celebrated. George Staib and the members of "Staibdance" collaborate for their latest evening length work, "Name Day." This new work is an emotional, geographic, and physical journey through two important life phases, birth and mourning, and traces the steps we take to become a vital part of our own cultures. Name Day will look at the ways in which we accept, reject, question, and find our own sense of belonging. Simultaneously, the piece examines the ritual and art of mourning, be it physical and/or emotional, through a culturally rich lens. This work is a reflection upon Staib’s dance investigations in Israel and unites diverse dancers, eclectic music, and a movement vocabulary steeped in traditions. Dr. Weidong Yang - A Speedy Service for Nucleocytoplasmic Transport

Private The nuclear pore complex (NPC), the sole gateway for nucleocytoplasmic exchange in eukaryotic cells, allows for the passive diffusion of small molecules and transport-receptor-facilitated translocation of signal-dependent cargo molecules. Whether small molecules passively diffuse through a single central channel or through multiple holes of a hydrogel network is a subject of debate. Additionally, whether the passive and facilitated transport systems occupy distinct or overlapping physical regions of the NPC remains unclear. Here, we directly test these models using an innovative three-dimensional super-resolution fluorescence microscopy of human cells. This approach reveals that a single viscous central channel in the NPC acts as the sole pathway for passive diffusion of various small molecules; transport receptors and their cargo complexes take distinct transport routes in the periphery, which is occluded by phenylalanine-glycine filaments. Furthermore, the passive and facilitated passageways in the NPC are… Speaker/Presenter: Dr. Weidong Yang - Bowling Green State University. Series: Physics Colloquia. Event Open To: All. As her career has unfolded, she has turned to spirituality as a major theme. Scholar’s Seminar on Modernism

Art History What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely. Discussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA), Todd Cronan (Emory), Lisa Florman (Ohio State), Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory), Sarah Hamill (Oberlin), Gordon Hughes (Rice), Dalia Judowitz (Emory), Andrew Mitchell (Emory), Charles Palermo (William and Mary), Michael Schreyach (Trinity), and others. “We Speak with the Left Hemisphere": The Story of Paul Broca’s Discovery that Changed Our Understanding of the Human Brain

CMBC ABSTRACT: In 1865, Paul Broca declared “We speak with the left hemisphere.” It would become one of the most important declarations in the history of the neurosciences because it signalled a fundamental change in our understanding of the human brain. The story, or at least small parts of it, is routinely told in books and articles in neuropsychology, neurology, history of psychology, and, increasingly, textbooks in general psychology and brain and behavior, and the terms “Broca’s area,” “Broca’s region,” and “Broca’s aphasia” are among the best known eponyms in medicine and the brain sciences. Many of these accounts, however, are, more or less, pro forma, skipping over some important parts of the story and, in my view, mischaracterizing certain other parts. In this talk, I want to go more deeply into the historical record because the actual story is more interesting (and less straightforward) than the one usually told. I’ll begin with a brief account of Broca’s early life and education and of what led him to… Emory Event Topic: Academics. College. Graduate. Lectures & Meetings. Event Open To: All. Dr. Douglas Osheroff - How Advances in Science Are Made - Nobel Laureate in Physics (1996)

Private How advances in science are made, and how they may come to benefit mankind at large are complex issues. The discoveries that most influence the way we think about nature seldom can be anticipated, and frequently the applications for new technologies developed to probe a specific characteristic of nature are also not clear, even to the inventors of these technologies. One thing is most clear: Seldom are such advances made by individuals alone. Rather, they result from the progress of the scientific community; asking questions, developing new technologies to answer those questions, and sharing their results and their ideas with others. However, there are indeed research strategies that can substantially increase the probability of one's making a discovery, and the speaker will illustrate some of these strategies in the context of a number of well known discoveries, including the work he did as a graduate student, for which he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1996. Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

Film Studies "Sweet Smell of Success" (Alexander Mackendrick; Hill-Hecht-Lancaster/UA, 1957) (1.66:1, 96 min.) Written by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman; music by Elmer Bernstein and the Chico Hamilton Quartet; starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Cinematography by James Wong Howe. "Sweet Smell of Success" was dubbed by one period reviewer “one of the most cynical movies ever made.” The steely stillness of Burt Lancaster’s performance as the Walter Winchell-based columnist J.J. Hunsecker may have justly earned him a place in AFI’s top 50 movie villains but Tony Curtis’ endlessly ingratiating and deliciously craven press agent Sidney Falco is the heart of this black-hearted movie: That is, if you don’t count Howe’s rendering of New York City itself. Voted onto the National Film Registry in 1993. Emory Event Topic: Arts. Department/Organization: Film Studies. Director: Alexander Mackendrick. Type of Art: Film - Screenings, Lectures, & Events. The Arab Spring: Between the Freedom of the Future and the Shackles of the Past

College Events As part of the Halle Speaker Series, Al-Jazeera Washington Bureau Chief Abderrahim Foukara will deliver a public lecture about the Arab Spring at Emory University on February 17. Until recently, anyone suggesting that an Arab country such as Egypt would be ruled by anyone other than the now-deposed Mubarak or his son Gamal would have been labeled either a lunatic or a believer in miracles. The so-called Arab Spring has delivered some miracles in some places, though it has also been nothing short of a painful and bloody labor of freedom in others. So, how much fruit will the Arab Spring's tree ultimately yield? This event is free, but guests should register online by Thursday, February 16. Visitor parking is available in the Fishburne deck. Kronos Quartet with Alim Qasimov Ensemble

"By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established" (Proverbs 24:3): The Archaeology of Destruction and Household

College Events Dr. James W. Hardin is Associate Professor and Middle Eastern Archaeologist in the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University The presentation will focus on the reconstruction of household organization in Judah during the Iron II (ca. 8th century BCE).  It centers in particular on one "4-room type house" excavated at Tell Halif in southern Israel by the Lahav Research Project during the summers of 1992, 1993, and 1999.  This house was preserved well in a destruction stratum that eclipsed the site at the end of the eighth century BCE.  The excellently preserved materials and their meticulous collection, including micro-artifacts, provide an excellent opportunity to examine post-depositional processes, activity area identification and organization, and what these mean for understanding the organization of broader household and its relationship to other spheres in Judahite society.  When these data are compared with ethnographic data and historical data (both bibl… Emory Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. China's International Identities: Coping with a Conflicted Rising Power

REALC David Shambaugh is professor of political science and international affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs and director of the China Policy Program at The George Washington University. He is also a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program and Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at The Brookings Institution. As the world’s most important rising power, many wonder: what kind of role will China take on the international stage? While a number of factors will influence the answer to this question, China’s own conceptions of itself and its global responsibilities will be a major determining factor. In this lecture, Professor David Shambaugh will explore the domestic discourse in China concerning its international identities—and will link these to alternative foreign policy postures that Beijing assumes on the world stage. T-Men (1947)

Film Studies "T-Men" (Anthony Mann, Eagle-Lion, 1947) (1.37:1, 92 min.) Produced by Aubrey Schenck; written by John Higgins and Virginia Kellogg; starring Dennis O’Keefe, Wallace Ford and Alfred Ryder. Cinematography by John Alton. Preserved by the Library of Congress. The first of five films to team Mann and Alton, this low budget, “case-file” crime drama became a major hit for the young Eagle-Lion studio. Though initially received as a new high in location-based realism, today Alton’s low-key lighting effects virtually define film noir visuals at their most stylized, expressionistic extreme. In Search of the Creative Brain: Frederic Chopin and George Sand

CMBC ABSTRACT: This lecture focuses on the intersection between aesthetics and neuroscience, and draws on research for my book-in-progress, The Graphological Impulse. Relying on “documents” of creative work, textual and musical, that emerged in an unusually productive summer Chopin and Sand spent in the countryside, I present, in a first part, an analysis of the emergence of two artworks in a blend of phenomenological and formal perspectives. The archive I use is, crucially, that of handwritten materials, which enable us to trace a creative process. The simultaneous emergence of two masterpieces of composition in related genres (music and lyrical prose) begs the question of the role played by the environment in this creative process. Capitalizing on the “ecological” explanations current in creativity studies (explanations derived from neuroscience), I offer suggestions as to how recent scientific research on synaesthesia or on unconscious processes, as well as models of brain plasticity, might help us analyze the… Emory Event Topic: Academics. Dr. Marcello Picollo - Fiber Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) and Hyper-spectral Imaging (HSI) Techniques Applied to the Analysis of Polychrome Surfaces

Private Fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) in the ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis) and near infrared (NIR) regions is a non-invasive methodology and a useful technique for analyzing works of art. In this spectral range, electronic and vibrational transitions can be observed. In the latter case, the transitions are multiple or combinations of transitions that are commonly observed in the mid-IR. FORS is primarily used to identify pigments and dyes, evaluate color and color changes, and to detect product alterations. FORS can also be a very useful tool to inform a sampling strategy: when used in conjunction with imaging spectroscopy, it may aid in the location of micro-sampling areas, while, when extending local data to a broader scale it may help in reducing the extent of micro-sampling. UV-VIS-NIR reflectance spectroscopy is based on the analysis of the radiation diffused by the surface when compared with a highly reflecting reference standard, such as Spectralon® or barium sulfate plates. The reflectance spe… Speaker/Presenter: Dr. Marcello Picollo - Institute of Applied Physics at the National Research Center of Italy. Series: Physics Colloquia. Event Open To: All. This Tennessee Williams-scripted, Elia Kazan-directed black comedy-drama sensation (Variety wanted to know how it got past the Code) made overnight film stars out of Baker and Wallach in their first starring roles as a teenage Mississippi Delta bride still sleeping in a crib and her would-be seducer. Williams, Baker and supporting actress Mildred Dunnock all earned Academy Award nominations, as did Boris Kaufman’s cinematography. Emory Event Topic: Arts. Department/Organization: Film Studies. Body of Water

Dance Hundreds of women, representing a broad spectrum of cultures and disciplines, are invited to walk in a structured improvisation and experience the dynamics of flow. This “happening” is an opportunity to communicate, through simple walking, the non-verbal ways in which women listen, connect, lead, follow, understand, and negotiate. Think of it as a different kind of flash mob. This work will co-exist with John Grade’s Piedmont Divide sculpture. Sally Radell and Lori Teague present a Movement Choir with the students of Dance Literacy. This kinetic landscape will be a thought-provoking aesthetic experience that will redefine this social space and interact with John Grade’s Piedmont Divide sculpture. Emory Event Topic: Arts. Gates of Silence

Interdisciplinary Composer and singer Susan Botti performs her original chamber work “Gates of Silence” with Vanderbilt University’s Blakemore Trio. “Gates of Silence” connects three independent pieces, inspired by Virgil's “Aeneid.” Each is a passage that echoes with relevance today—in our fallen cities, in our physical passages, and in our personal interactions with each other and with our destinies. There is a reiterated rhythm of loss, but also one of renewal, hope and continuation. The final passage sets poetry by National Book Award finalist, Linda Gregerson. She was awarded the Pushcart Prize for her poem “Dido Refuses to Speak,” commissioned by Botti for “Gates of Silence.” Susan Botti is a Coca-Cola Artist in Residence at Emory University. This event is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Artists in Residence program, MetLife Creative Connections program, the Emory College Hightower Fund, the Center for Creativity & Arts, the Michael C. Carlos Museum, and the departments of English, Music, Theater and Dance. Emory Event Topic: Arts. Type of Art: Arts - Interdisciplinary Events & Exhibitions. Event Open To: All. Cost: Free. Are Humans the Only Linguistic Species?

CMBC SYNOPSIS: Humans have language, which is a form of communication. Other animals have communication, but not language. This is usually how the debate about the uniqueness of our "language instinct" is summarized. But then there are apes that have learned symbolic communication, honey bees with dance language, and other possible exceptions. So, how unique is human language? Two experts of primate behavior debate the issue. Emory Event Topic: Academics. College. Graduate. Lectures & Meetings. Event Open To: All. Black Narcissus (1947)

Film Studies "Black Narcissus" (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; The Archers, 1947) (1.37:1, 100 min.) Produced by Powell & Pressburger; written by Powell and Pressburger from the novel by Rumer Godden; starring Deborah Kerr, Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron, David Farrar, Sabu and Jean Simmons. Cinematography by Jack Cardiff. This India set-film about a group of nuns unprepared for the overripe sensuousness engulfing their isolated mountain convent, was shot entirely in Britain’s Pinewood Studios and the garden of a retired army officer in West Sussex that contained the appropriate foliage. Director Powell felt that this was the only way to achieve the complete unity in visual design that he envisioned. The results were spectacular, with the film earning Alfred Junge a pair of Academy Awards for color art direction and set design as well as one for Jack Cardiff’s color cinematography. Emory Event Topic: Arts. Department/Organization: Film Studies. Director: Michael Power and Emeric Pressburger. Type of Art: Film - Screenings, Lectures, & Events. Series: Emory Cinematheque. Lifelong Bilingualism: Linguistic Costs, Cognitive Benefits, and Long-term Consequences

CMBC ABSTRACT: A growing body of research using both behavioral and neuroimaging data points to a significant effect of bilingualism on cognitive outcomes across the lifespan. The main finding is evidence for the enhancement of executive control at all stages in the lifespan, with the most dramatic results being maintained cognitive performance in elderly adults, and protection against the onset of dementia. A more complex picture emerges when the cognitive advantages of bilingualism are considered together with the costs to linguistic processing. I will review evidence for both these outcomes and propose a framework for understanding the mechanism that could lead to these positive and negative consequences of bilingualism. Sponsored by the Emory College Language Center; co-sponsored by the CMBC. Emory Event Topic: Academics. College. Graduate. Lectures & Meetings. Event Open To: All. Presenter: Ellen Bialystok, PhD (Cognitive Development, York University, Toronto). Department/Organization: Center for Mind Brain and Culture. Series: CMBC Spring 2012 Lecture Series. Cost: Free.
