A singular protest by a Tunisian street vendor ignited rebellion, resistance and regime change that spurred a tumultuous year across the Arab world. Now, armed with new media, fresh and vibrant voices are emerging all across the region to challenge old political control and some cultural traditions. What is often called the “cradle of civilization” is in a state of change.

Lecture: Embodying Nirvana: Meditations on Buddhist Mandalas
Arts and Museums
John Dunne, Associate Professor of Religion at Emory University gives a lecture titled Embodying Nirvana: Meditations on Buddhist Mandalas.
For the casual observer, a mandala appears to be a beautiful, geometrical design, but for the practitioner of Buddhist tantra, the mandala is a bridge to an alternative reality in which the wondrous qualities of enlightenment are literally embodied. Drawing on traditional Buddhist theories and current work on the nature of human cognition, this talk presents the central features of tantric meditation on mandalas along with its connection to the transformation of mind and body.

The discussant, Dr. Mark James, has been intrigued by the film for many years due to its strange, evocative, dreamlike, surreal, primary process qualities. Scholar’s Seminar on Modernism
Arts and Museums
What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely.
Discussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA), Todd Cronan (Emory), Lisa Florman (Ohio State), Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory), Sarah Hamill (Oberlin), Gordon Hughes (Rice), Dalia Judowitz (Emory), Andrew Mitchell (Emory), Charles Palermo (William and Mary), Michael Schreyach (Trinity), and others.

Deng Xiaoping and His Opening to the World
Ezra Vogel, renowned scholar of modern Japan and China, will deliver a public lecture at Emory University on Monday, February 13 as part of The Halle Institute's spring 2012 China Speaker Series.
Vogel will discuss the legacy of Deng Xiaoping, who, unlike Chairman Mao, lived abroad before coming to power. He lived in France from 1920-1925 and then spent a year in the Soviet Union. As secretary general of the Communist Party for over a decade, he had broad experiences in meeting leaders of the communist party of other countries. From 1973-75, under the guidance of Zhou Enlai, he was the leading Chinese official meeting leaders of foreign countries. By the time he came to power in 1978, he had formed the basis of deeper relations with Europe, Japan, and the United States. During his leadership (1978-1992), China expanded its relationship with western countries, and he mended relations with the Soviet Union. His approach to foreign relations can be illustrated by his relations with world leaders whom he met d…

Tricky Titans, bundles of nymphs, and a revolving-door account of divine succession fill the thousand-plus lines of Hesiod’s Theogony, a mythical account of how the world came to be— and how a poet got his voice. Led by Dr. Sandra Blakely, Associate Professor in the Classics Department, readers will dive into the poetry and mythology of this late eighth-century BC poem, considering its historical context and Near Eastern influences; the ritual realities and local cults of the gods; and contemporary hypotheses for the meaning of the poem, preserved from the earliest boundary of the Greek literary tradition. Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Arts and Museums
"Sweet Smell of Success" (Alexander Mackendrick; Hill-Hecht-Lancaster/UA, 1957) (1.66:1, 96 min.) Written by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman; music by Elmer Bernstein and the Chico Hamilton Quartet; starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Cinematography by James Wong Howe.
"Sweet Smell of Success" was dubbed by one period reviewer “one of the most cynical movies ever made.” The steely stillness of Burt Lancaster’s performance as the Walter Winchell-based columnist J.J. Hunsecker may have justly earned him a place in AFI’s top 50 movie villains but Tony Curtis’ endlessly ingratiating and deliciously craven press agent Sidney Falco is the heart of this black-hearted movie: That is, if you don’t count Howe’s rendering of New York City itself. Voted onto the National Film Registry in 1993.

The Arab Spring: Between the Freedom of the Future and the Shackles of the Past
As part of the Halle Speaker Series, Al-Jazeera Washington Bureau Chief Abderrahim Foukara will deliver a public lecture about the Arab Spring at Emory University on February 17.
Until recently, anyone suggesting that an Arab country such as Egypt would be ruled by anyone other than the now-deposed Mubarak or his son Gamal would have been labeled either a lunatic or a believer in miracles. The so-called Arab Spring has delivered some miracles in some places, though it has also been nothing short of a painful and bloody labor of freedom in others. So, how much fruit will the Arab Spring's tree ultimately yield?
This event is free, but guests should register online by Thursday, February 16.
Visitor parking is available in the Fishburne deck.

The collaboration between Kronos Quartet and the Alim Qasimov Ensemble produces powerful pieces drawn from the repertoire of Azerbaijani ashiqs—oral-tradition singer-songwriters whose song texts portray, often with wry humor and searing irony, the power of love and the pain of separation. The legendary singer Alim Qasimov is called “one of the most thrilling, unashamedly emotional performers on the planet” (Robin Denselow, the "Guardian").

Carlos Reads Book Club

Emory scholars Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao lead readers through The Ramayana.
One of India's two major pan-Indian epics, the Ramayana has had a long and sustained history in the development of civilizational values in South Asia. The Ramayana has multiple regional language versions, both literary and oral, in addition to a number of literary forms in Sanskrit itself. It's popularity and influence cannot be over estimated. Its characters are larger than life, occupy an imagined timeless past, and at the same time, they are household names, as familiar as next door neighbors speaking to the present. Episodes from the Ramayana are represented in every conceivable medium: poetry, drama, dance, song, sculpture, painting and film. Since the text of the full Ramayana is too long for our book group, Drs. Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes.…

"By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established" (Proverbs 24:3): The Archaeology of Destruction and Household
International
Dr. James W. Hardin is Associate Professor and Middle Eastern Archaeologist in the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University
The presentation will focus on the reconstruction of household organization in Judah during the Iron II (ca. 8th century BCE). It centers in particular on one
"4-room type house" excavated at Tell Halif in southern Israel by the Lahav Research Project during the summers of 1992, 1993, and 1999. This house was preserved well in a destruction stratum that eclipsed the site at the end of the eighth century BCE. The excellently preserved materials and their meticulous collection, including micro-artifacts, provide an excellent opportunity to examine post-depositional processes, activity area identification and organization, and what these mean for understanding the organization of broader household and its relationship to other spheres in Judahite society. When these data are compared with ethnographic data and historical data (both bibl…

China's International Identities: Coping with a Conflicted Rising Power
As the world’s most important rising power, many wonder: what kind of role will China take on the international stage? While a number of factors will influence the answer to this question, China’s own conceptions of itself and its global responsibilities will be a major determining factor. In this lecture, Professor David Shambaugh will explore the domestic discourse in China concerning its international identities—and will link these to alternative foreign policy postures that Beijing assumes on the world stage.
David Shambaugh is professor of political science and international affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs and director of the China Policy Program at The George Washington University. He is also a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program and Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at The Brookings Institution. Shambaugh is an internationally recognized authority on China’s domestic politics, foreign relations, military and security, and the international r…

T-Men (1947)

"T-Men" (Anthony Mann, Eagle-Lion, 1947) (1.37:1, 92 min.) Produced by Aubrey Schenck; written by John Higgins and Virginia Kellogg; starring Dennis O’Keefe, Wallace Ford and Alfred Ryder. Cinematography by John Alton. Preserved by the Library of Congress.
The first of five films to team Mann and Alton, this low budget, “case-file” crime drama became a major hit for the young Eagle-Lion studio. Though initially received as a new high in location-based realism, today Alton’s low-key lighting effects virtually define film noir visuals at their most stylized, expressionistic extreme.

Lecture: Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.
Arts and Museums
Gloria Ferrari Pinney, Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Art at Harvard University delivers the annual Phi Beta Kappa Lecture, Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.
In the 330s BCE the Athenians dedicated to Pythian Apollo at Delphi an extraordinary monument: a gigantic column wrapped in acanthus leaves, on top of which are three dancing maidens who hold aloft over their heads a large bronze tripod. Why this and why now? The years are a particularly dramatic period in Athenian history, one that opens in 338 with the crushing defeat of the Athenian and Boeotian forces at Chaeronea and the prospect of a Macedonian invasion. Nearly 120 years since its discovery, the meaning of the Column and the occasion for its dedication remain hotly debated topics. This lecture traces the disparate elements of this assemblage to parallels in visual and poetic imagery and identifies in it a representation of a cosmic landmark that is relevant to both Helios Apollo and to its…

The Radio Show, Kyle Abraham/Abraham In Motion
Arts and Museums
"The best and brightest creative talent to emerge in New York City in the age of Obama." - Out Magazine
Pittsburgh-native Kyle Abraham delves into identity and personal history in The Radio Show. Creating an abstract narrative around the loss of communication, he investigates the effects of the abrupt discontinuation of Pittsburgh radio station WAMO on a community, and the lingering effects of Alzheimer's and aphasia on a family. Abraham mixes recordings of classic soul and hip hop with contemporary classical compositions to create an eclectic score that evokes fond memories and a passion for what is lost.

Carlos Reads Book Club
Arts and Museums
Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $5…

Conversation with Rob Walker
Arts and Museums
Rob Walker is the former Consumed columnist for the New York Times Magazine, the author of Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, and the founder of The Unconsumption Project. In an informal conversation, Mr. Walker and Bobbi Patterson of Emory’s Department of Religion, will discuss one of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism—that suffering is caused by desire—and the complexity of navigating a culture in which “desire” is manufactured by product designers and advertising agencies, and driven by our own consumerism.
This program is co-sponsored by Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives.
“The most trenchant psychoanalyst of our consumer selves is Rob Walker. ‘Buying In’ is a fresh and fascinating exploration of the places where material culture and identity intersect.” – Michael Pollan.".
