Traveling between worlds: Stories in the classroom

Molly Andrews, Professor of Political Psychology at the University of East London and and Co-director of the Centre for Narrative Research
Elizabeth Dawes-Duraisingh (D6),Discussant

These interests have guided her studies in virtual worlds and STEM (science, math, engineering & math) education in and across classrooms, clubs, and digital social environments. In particular, she spent several years studying and writing about identity, avatar design, ethnicity, gender, and cheating in the virtual world of Whyville.net. She recently co-authored a critical review of children's participation in social networking sites for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. Boundary Objects: Intersections for Identification and Learning across Diverse Contexts and Media
Deborah A. Fields is a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the intersections of kids' lives: between personal and academic interests, identity and learning, and across different social settings. She is currently studying issues of aesthetics, learning, and gender in kids' designs with digital techno…

What the NFL Can Teach Teachers
Askwith Forums and Public Lecture Series
Moderator: Andy Rotherham, co-founder & partner, Bellwether Education Partners, and columnist, The New York Times
Speakers: Tim Daly, president, New Teacher Project; and Brendan Daly, defensive line coach, St. Louis Rams
Does the culture of The National Football League and how NFL teams use data and evaluate performance evaluation hold lessons for classrooms? Football often implores consistent and constant methods of evaluation in practice and in the games, as opposed to schools where most often reflections are made at the end of a term. And in the NFL what success looks like is clear, unambiguous, and rigorously enforced. An NFL coach and national teacher quality expert will discuss what the teaching profession can learn from the National Football League.
