"Arsenic & Old Lace"

Theater "Arsenic & Old Lace," a black comedy with plenty of screwball elements, is perhaps best known through Frank Capra's 1944 film adaption starring Cary Grant. The play centers on two elderly sisters who are famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity. Unfortunately, however, their charity includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging (because they look so happy when they die). The two women are assisted in their crimes by their nephew Teddy who believes he is (and dresses as) Teddy Roosevelt (and who frequently blasts a bugle and yells “charge” as he bounds up the stairs). Matters get complicated when a second nephew, Mortimer, a theater critic, discovers the murders just as he’s about to marry the girl next door. Things get even stranger when a third nephew, Jonathan, appears with his sidekick Dr. Einstein after having just escaped from a prison for the criminally insane. A delightful and nutty romp for all ages. Region: Upper Cape. Town: Falmouth. Category: Arts/Entertainment. Cost: adults $20, seniors $18, children $16. Phone: 508-548-0400. Occidental Gypsy:

Concerts Occidental Gypsy delivers an exhilarating blend of gypsy swing, jazz, and world music with a riff-rich, roaring acoustic sound, and sultry vocals reminiscent of the first era of swing. This nationally-recognized band plays a dynamic, multi-genre mix of original vocal and instrumental pieces and with many notable covers like a “gypsyfied” take on Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The Boston Globe has named them a “Best Bet for Weekend Entertainment,” and musician David Bromberg said of the group, “great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, with high energy originals that leave the crowd crazy. An awesome band.” After completing his recent tour with Wynton Marsalis, Occidental’s violinist Eli Bishop rouses audiences with his award-winning lightning-fast violin, while lead guitarist Brett Feldman drives the sound with swinging gypsy guitar. Jeremy Frantz— a protege of legendary jazz guitarist Joe Negri— brings his sultry, “retro” vocals and expert jazz guitar to the front line, and serves as an exquisite counter… Region: Mid Cape. Ghosts of the Atlantic: Race, Murder and Memory in the American Slaving Past

Lectures / Seminars About the Lecture On June 15, 1791, sailor John Cranston gave testimony before a federal grand jury to assist in deciding the legal fate of Rhode Island slave trader, James D’Wolf, who was accused of throwing an enslaved African female overboard suffering from smallpox while traveling from West Africa to the Caribbean aboard the slave ship Polly. The trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was plagued by the constant transmission of bacteria and disease. This case offers a useful window into maritime slavery and, moreover, how entangled factors of race, masculinity and power became manifested through the discarding of and subsequent murder of a diseased female captive. Using the social space of the Atlantic Ocean as viable site of trauma and suffering, this talk provides much needed attention on a black woman’s experience of life and death on the high seas, while likewise going further to overturn silences surrounding memory and an active American slaving past.
