Music Alliance: Konstantin Lifschitz, piano
Conservatory Artist Series
As a child, Lifschitz became irresistibly attracted to the piano, playing by ear and improvising with total absorption for hours on end. At age 17, his interpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations led The New York Times to acclaim the performance as "the most powerful pianistic interpretation since Glenn Gould's." Lifschitz is also performing in the Friends of Chamber Music's 2012 Bach Festival, and will give master classes at the Conservatory.

Richard Goode, piano (Master Class)
Master Classes & Lectures
Pianist Richard Goode’s music-making speaks of a sublime connection with the composers which inspires critics around the world to utter such praise as "you’d swear the composer himself was at the keyboard, expressing musical thoughts that had just come into his head." The American pianist’s tremendous emotional power, depth and expressiveness can be heard in recitals, chamber and orchestral collaborations around the world. Goode presents a master class at the Conservatory.

"Light, Shadow, and Sound" is an installation featuring videos byMcCoy, from her "Light and Shadow" series, accompanied by an original score written by Carl. McCoy has recorded the often surprising and abstract effects of shadows, animated by such phenomena as wind and the passage of the sun, on various surfaces from locations as varied asJapan, Italy, and Kansas City. Carl will create an accompanying soundscape performed by live musicians for a simultaneous projection of several of these videos. Carl’s piece will have an open form that will guide the performers in their interpretation and response to the visual imagery. The resulting is a sound is both controlled and improvised. The visual and sonic elements are autonomous, yet also structured to create a cohesion that will become evident to listeners as they pass through the piece. The audience will be encouraged to move about during the performance in an attempt to ac…

An Evening with Carlisle Floyd
Opera
Carlisle Floyd has created a distinctively American idiom for opera, drawing on national folk and religious music traditions. His nine music theatre works combine penetrating social commentary with acute psychological insight. Floyd writes his own librettos, in which he has treated such themes as the aftermath of the Civil War, the Great Depression, and rural fundamentalism. Susannah (1955), his best-known opera, has entered the permanent repertory with countless productions in the United States and a growing number in Europe. Other operas include Of Mice and Men (1969) and The Passion of Jonathan Wade (1962, rev. 1989).
