Speak Truth To Power - Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World

Exhibits & Galleries The museum’s special exhibit, Speak Truth To Power, explores the issue of human rights through a collection of 50 large, emotional portraits of people from around the world who have stood up against injustice. These beautiful portraits, created by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams in 2000, bring us face to face with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, the Dalai Lama, Marian Wright Edelman, and other inspiring human rights defenders. The exhibition can be appreciated on a number of levels. Adams’ photographs are stunning works of art in their own right, the stories of the human rights defenders, compiled by RFK Center founder Kerry Kennedy, have the power to inspire action, and the parallels that can be drawn between the important issues of the 1960s and the continuing abuses of individual rights can enlighten us as to the work that still needs to be done. Weekly opinion topics give exhibition guests an opportunity to participate in a public discussion about issues that affect us all.… Region: Sullivan. Viviane Silvera: Therapy Series

Exhibits & Galleries Edward Hopper House presents the work of Viviane Silvera in the Hopper Hallway. Inspired by scenes from film and television, Silvera explores the world of psychotherapy, focusing on themes found in Hopper’s works such as solitude, alienation, and dream-like evocations. Her figures are abstracted in an often-monochromatic palette, transforming the specific into the archetypal, leaving - as in a Hopper painting - an ambiguous narrative that’s up to the viewer to imagine. Let Loose the Dogs of War: New York in the Civil War, a lecture with Robert W. Arnold III

Lectures / Seminars New York supplied more men, money and material in the Civil War than any other state, North or South, but New Yorkers responded to the Civil War in diverse and often contradictory fashions. Presented by Robert W. Arnold III (Public Historian, Adjunct Professor of History, College of Saint Rose and Excelsior College), this presentation will examine a sample of those responses and some individuals who exemplify them, put in the political, social and military contexts of the war. It will look at the social costs of the war as they played out in the farms and cities of the Empire State, in families, workplaces and neighborhoods and the transition that went with it from an era of reform to the Gilded Age.

Project: Identify Fall 2014 - Inspiring Teen Expression Through Creative Arts

Arts & Entertainment Come join us at the Conservatory for the newest installment of Project: Identity. You do not need to be experienced in visual or performing arts, music, public speaking, photography... you just need to be yourself! We will learn these skills together. The group will share individual creative works while continuing to be inspired by each others' art and music. The program provides an understanding of the importance and need for creative arts and gives teens a safe and encouraging environment for expression to thrive.
