Advanced Grant Writing Class

A 4-week, noncredit professional development course which will provide advanced training and extensive individual feedback to help you write better grant applications. The writing-intensive course will use examples of successful applications and contributions from class participants to improve grant-writing skills. Topics will include strategic placement of information, improving sentence structure, and revising for clarity and readability. Class sessions are complemented by 4 one-on-one sessions with the instructor to revise and edit the applications that participants are working on. Suitable for experienced faculty who are writing grants in the new NIH format and for those with less experience as well. The Vollum writing course is and in-depth, 6-week professional science writing course open to OHSU graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. This class uses short lectures, class discussion, and workshop-style writing assignments, as well as individual sessions, to help researchers learn to write better papers and grants. The emphasis is on improving writing style. In addition to the weekly workshop, you'll receive six individual meetings with the instructor. These meetings are tailored to your needs, with the goal of helping you finish manuscripts and grants. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this noncredit, professional development course, but you should not take the class unless you have enough data to write about.
