Mindfulness Meditation Drop-in

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness meditation teaches skills for being in the present moment no matter what the situation. Mindfulness meditation studies show positive outcomes in quality of life and symptoms across a variety of health issues (stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, chronic pain, and cancer). The key to getting the most out of mindfulness is PRACTICE. Mindfulness can be applied to any object of attention. For example, you can focus on your breath, sounds, thoughts, or emotions. You can also be mindful during your daily life activities like eating, cooking, or brushing your teeth.

MBSR teaches participants to develop specific skills for concentration and deep relaxation. This course is based on the national model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, at the UMass Medical Center. Two decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the course report: Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away, an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, improved self-esteem, an increased ability to cope effectively with stressful situations and a lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms.

A 4-week, noncredit professional development course which will provide advanced training and extensive individual feedback to help you write better grant applications. The writing-intensive course will use examples of successful applications and contributions from class participants to improve grant-writing skills. Topics will include strategic placement of information, improving sentence structure, and revising for clarity and readability. LECTURE SUMMARY: Despite the widespread availability of contraceptives, birth control methods are used inconsistently or incorrectly and this exposes women to the risk of unintended pregnancy. Reasons for imperfect use include misperceptions about risks and fear of side effects, particularly with hormonal methods. As a physician, Jeffrey Jensen, MD, witnesses firsthand the difficulty his patients experience when dealing with the consequences of unintended pregnancy. These women and their partners inspire his dedication to develop new contraception methods.
Dr. Jensen will talk about next-generation birth control and the race to bring better choices to family planning. Dr. Jensen is the Leon Speroff Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Director of theWomen's Health Research Unit in the Center for Women's Health, and a collaborating scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

Dr. Jade Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She also has joint faculty appointments in the Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Dept. of Molecular Virology & Microbiology, and the Program in Cell & Molecular Biology. She is also Co-Director of the Graduate Program in Cell and Molecular Biology.
She has been the recipient of several major awards while at Baylor, including the Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. Excellence in Research Award; The American Society for Microbiology Branch Lectureships; the Rosalind Franklin Young Investigator Award; and the NIH Director's New Innovator Award.
Dr. Wang received her B.Sc. degree from McGill University; her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco; and was a Postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness meditation teaches skills for being in the present moment no matter what the situation. Mindfulness meditation studies show positive outcomes in quality of life and symptoms across a variety of health issues (stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, chronic pain, and cancer). The key to getting the most out of mindfulness is PRACTICE. Mindfulness can be applied to any object of attention. For example, you can focus on your breath, sounds, thoughts, or emotions. You can also be mindful during your daily life activities like eating, cooking, or brushing your teeth.
The goal of this weekly drop-in mindfulness meditation class is to practice many different types of guided mindfulness meditations to experience which ones work best for you. Each week will highlight a different guided mindfulness meditation. No experience is required.

The writing-intensive course will use examples of successful applications and contributions from class participants to improve grant-writing skills. MBSR teaches participants to develop specific skills for concentration and deep relaxation. This course is based on the national model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, at the UMass Medical Center. Two decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the course report: Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away, an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, improved self-esteem, an increased ability to cope effectively with stressful situations and a lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms.

The Value of Health – The Argument for Strong Investment in Medical and Scientific Research
The late Senator Hatfield was a tireless advocate for scientific and medical research and for Oregon’s system of higher education. That advocacy made possible the Oregon Health & Science University we know today. To honor his legacy, OHSU hosts an annual Mark O. Hatfield Lecture, delivered this year by Dr. Albert Starr.
Dr. Albert Starr came to OHSU in 1957 and led OHSU’s heart surgery program. He is best known for co-inventing and implanting the world’s first successful artificial heart valve, the Starr-Edwards Heart Valve, in 1960. Since then, the artificial heart valve technology has saved literally hundreds of thousands of lives.
Dr. Starr led a joint cardiac surgery program for OHSU and Providence from 1964 until 1989, when he began to practice solely at Providence. Dr. Starr recently rejoined OHSU where he will leverage his extraordinary experience to enhance and build OHSU’s public and private partnerships in research, education, clinical care and outreach.

Psychiatry Grand Rounds - A Clinical Update on Child & Adolescent ADHD

Psychiatry Grand Rounds provides continuing medical education for the target audience. To enable discussion that both is about and involves the patient so the physician can better understand the depth of one's mental illness. Explore the history of certain policies and procedures in place for handling mentally ill patients and what can happen to improve care and treatment that they receive. To better explain and expand on various forms of mental illness and how treatment should be approached and practiced by the clinician.
