"NT Live: Traveling Light" at Modlin Center

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude everyother cinematic pioneer for years to come? In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to… Thursday, February 9, 2012, 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM. Crenshaw Way Richmond, VA. UR ChinaFest Film: "Walking to School"

Walking to School 2009, China, 87 minutes. Wawa is a 7-year-old Lisu child who quite envies his elder sister who can cross the river to go to school while his mother insists that he cannot. One day, unable to resist the temptation, Wawa secretly crosses the river alone in order to get a glimpse of the school. Unexpectedly, his secret is found by Miss Nie, and Wawa has to promise his mother and elder sister that he will not secretly go to Liusuo by himself anymore. Taiwan cinematographer Li Yixu showcases the breathtaking local landscape: the scenes of protagonists suspended between steep ravines, with the raging river under their feet, are by turns hair-raising and visually stunning. The directors also balance tension with humor by juxtaposing Naxiang's matter-of-fact ease with the hysterical reactions of the doctor and new schoolteacher (Cao Xiwen) when they take their own virgin ride. Winner of multiple awards. Friday, February 10, 2012, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Robins School of Business University of Richmond. For more info visit www.therosegroup.org.

Following a tantalizing trail of archaeological and chemical clues around the world and through the millennia, Dr. Patrick McGovern tells the compelling story of humanity's ingenious, intoxicating quest for the perfect drink. Whether it be mind-altering or medicinal, a religious symbol, social lubricant, or artistic inspiration, fermented beverages have not only been a profound force in history, but they may be fundamental to the human condition itself. A tasting of a selection of beers from Dogfish Head Brewery follows the lecture. Richmond Ballet Presents "Coppélia" at CenterStage

Friday, February 10 - 7:00 PM Saturday, February 11 - 2:00 PM Saturday, February 11 - 7:00 PM Sunday, February 12 - 2:00 PM One of ballet's most charming stories, Coppélia is the comic tale of villagers Swanhilda, her beau Franz, and their encounter with the mysterious toy shop owner, Dr. Coppelius. Swanhilda and Franz's love story is interrupted when Franz turns his gaze to the beautiful girl sitting on Dr. Coppelius' balcony, but she doesn't seem to recognize his advances...in fact, she doesn't seem to move or talk at all because she is really a doll! While a case of mistaken identity, zany dancing toys, and traditional folk dance ensue, a beautiful classical ballet emerges. Audiences will enjoy Frederic Franklin's lively choreography, all danced to the animated score by Leo Delibes, making this a perfect Valentine's present for the whole family! Friday, February 10, 2012, 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM. 600 E. Grace St. Richmond, VA. For more info visit www.richmondcenterstage.com.

The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to… Friday, February 10, 2012, 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM. Crenshaw Way Richmond, VA. Coppelius. Sunday, February 12, 2012, 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM. 600 E. Grace St. Richmond, VA. For more info visit www.richmondcenterstage.com.

DJ Williams Projekt at Cafe Diem

When you combine a tight groovin' rhythm section, sweet horn lines, and an amazing guitar player player who plays with honest to God soul, you've got yourself a solid winner when it comes to entertaining a crowd. Complex or simple, Williams's lines become funk chops, picking up speed one minute and slamming a 180 on a dime the next with the "Projekt" backing it up all along and enhancing the ride. The band describes it as "a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop back beat." http://www.myspace.com/djwmusic. The men who make up the rock band RED have been through those trials themselves. Dan Cummins at Funny Bone

In 2008, Dan performed on two episodes of NBC's "Last Comic Standing," including the semi-final in Las Vegas, where he did not move on despite receiving a partial standing ovation from the crowd. So, Dan wrote some better jokes. These jokes got him a full standing ovation when he taped his episode of Byron Allen's Comedy.TV in the spring of 2009 and another standing ovation at the end of his first one hour comedy special, "Crazy With a Capital F," filmed in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane Washington. This special will premiere on Comedy Central in the spring of 2010. These jokes also earned Dan his first appearance on the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," where Conan plugged Dan's first nationally released CD, "Revenge is Near," available in stores and on iTunes through Warner Brothers Records. This CD was named one of the 10 best comedy CDs of 2009 by Punchlinemagazine.com, and made it to #7 on the Billboard Comedy Charts. These jokes also earned Dan his first appearance on the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," where Conan plugged Dan's first nationally released CD, "Revenge is Near," available in stores and on iTunes through Warner Brothers Records.
