Dry Branch Fire Squad - http://www.drybranchfiresquad.com
For more than 25 years Dry Branch Fire Squad has been one of bluegrass music's most popular bands, renowned for its spry mix of front-porch standards, modern ballads, and the old-time sounds from which bluegrass first sprang. The (quartet) is positively adored for its droll, scampy stage shows, fueled by Ron Thomason's cornpone-and-hard-cider wit. On their irresistible new Rounder concert CD, Live at the Newburyport Firehouse...his laconic monologues unfurl like long, laze serpents: When they strike, it's with such suddenness and accuracy that they almost leave you too breathless to laugh. Almost. Scott Alarik, Boston Globe.

It will have intense live performances from some of the crustiest, doomiest, and most progressive of heavy bands from the south. Born & raised in Harlem, New York, ASAP Rocky is no stranger to the cliché rap lifestyle, popularized by fellow Harlem Patriarchs from Big L & Kool Moe Dee to Ma$e, and Cam'ron. However, Rocky's entrenching yet melodic rap style has drawn more immediate comparisons to recently incarcerated Harlemite Max B.

Birds and Arrows (with Skylar Gudasz and The Ugly Girls) at Ashland Coffee & Tea
Like the band’s name, Birds and Arrows isn’t easy to pin down. Comprised of husband and wife duo Andrea and Pete Connolly and cellist Josh Starmer, the Chapel Hill and Durham-based group defies the genres and conventions that other bands inhabit. Like a sweet summer breeze that gusts through a wrap-around porch, this group blends Appalachian tradition and indie charm, weaving warm vocals with understated instrumentation and wistful romanticism.
BIRDS and ARROWS accomplish an elegant, warm sound that is truly their own. Their compelling and road tested live show appeals to a surprisingly wide range of audiences; they are the cherished rock band for folk lovers and the favorite folk group for rock fans.

Andy Poxon Band - http://andypoxon.com/fr_home.cfm
EllerSoul Records is proud to announce the signing of Andy Poxon and is working hard promotnig and distributing Andy's great debut CD, Red Roots. Only 16 when he recorded these tracks, Andy not only wrote all of the songs but produced the session as well, big job for anyone at any age. Poxon's mixture of American Roots music incorporates heavy doses of the blues as well as rockabilly, soul and jazz guitar flourishes.
Poxon's song writing is already advanced with impressive lyrics and arrangements. No doubt he'll be compared to other great young artists, but Andy is truly his own man. He is a true triple threat as a song writer, singer and gifted guitarist. Andy is one of the most talented young musicians to come around in a very, very long time.

Turbine - http://turbinemusic.com/home.php
Produced by Grammy-winner John Davis (The Black Keys), Blue Light City evokes the smart groove-pop of '80’s bands like INXS and XTC, the psychedelic rock of Flaming Lips and Pink Floyd, the soul-rock of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, aspects of prog-rock pioneers Yes and King Crimson and even elements of late 70's era Grateful Dead, all in one strangely cohesive record. These diverse influences would typically clash and burn, but Turbine’s singular vision combines them in a way that makes it all simply sound like Turbine.

The Jealous Sound, Family Cat at Strange Matter
THE JEALOUS SOUND - http://www.jealoussound.com/
Sunday's Best's Pedro Benito (guitar), John McGinnis of Neither Trumpets nor Drums (bass), ex-Knapsack singer/guitarist Blair Shehan, and former Pulley drummer Tony Palermo began their journey as the Jealous Sound at the tail end of the 1990s. They signed with Better Looking in summer 2000 and quickly issued a self-titled EP; it went on to sell 11,000 copies and show dates with At the Drive-In, the Get Up Kids, the Promise Ring, and Death Cab for Cutie allowed the band's buzz to soar.

The Jealous Sound were without a record home, but pride didn't stop them from getting back with Better Looking. Plans for a proper studio full-length came together in late 2002; the band headed into the studio with Tim O'Heir (Lou Barlow, Morphine, Juliana Hatfield) and Adam Wad…

Biohazard & Madball at Kingdom
Biohazard - http://www.last.fm/music/Biohazard
Biohazard was one of the first bands to regularly incorporate elements of both hip-hop and hardcore metal into their sound; since their lyrical fare dealt with the harshness of urban life and the resulting anger and frustration, which both genres of music have been known to address, the connection only made sense, especially in light of Anthrax's highly effective collaboration with Public Enemy on 1991's "Bring the Noise.".

DJ Williams Projekt at Cafe Diem
When you combine a tight groovin' rhythm section, sweet horn lines, and an amazing guitar player player who plays with honest to God soul, you've got yourself a solid winner when it comes to entertaining a crowd.
Complex or simple, Williams's lines become funk chops, picking up speed one minute and slamming a 180 on a dime the next with the "Projekt" backing it up all along and enhancing the ride. The band describes it as "a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop back beat." http://www.myspace.com/djwmusic.

WORLD INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY - http://www.worldinferno.com/

The World/Inferno Friendship Society is a cabaret punk band from Brooklyn, New York. Its style merges punk, klezmer, and gospel, while its collective membership features horns, piano, guitar, a number of percussionists, as well as a variety of other instruments such as accordion, xylophone and orchestra bells.
This musical collective has historically had over 30 members, including former members of Dexys Midnight Runners. Usually one can expect to see about nine or ten members on-stage when they perform. The group is led by singer Jack Terricloth and guitarist Lucky Strano, who have been the most constant members throughout the group’s history. Terricloth is known for his pointed commentary during shows: his monologues have touched on politics, his transformation from the “old school,” and baiting of bouncers which usually end up with the band buying drinks for the whole staff.…

Beast Wellington at Bogart's
Beast - http://www.beastwellington.com
Who is hungry for some serious funk? Beast.... It's what's for dinner. Beast Wellington's infectious sound can only be described as Beastfunk meets Rhythm and Bruise and it's guaranteed to make you shake what your Mama gave ya!
Their sound reclaims the soulful excitement of your favorite horn bands from back in the day. Think Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power and Steely Dan. Featuring sassy vocals backed by a fierce power trio and funky horn lines provided by the Femme Fatale Horns... that's right: a female horn section that is in fact quite deadly.

The epic quest of finding one's identity might be one of the most universal themes found in the pursuit of art. The hopeless wandering replaced by the hope-filled breakthrough has been chronicled time and again in painting, sculpture, prose, poetry, film and, certainly, music.
The men who make up the rock band RED have been through those trials themselves. They've taken those experiences to heart, mixed them with a plethora of influences – be they observations on art they admire, or communications with fans they adore – and now burst forth with a dynamic new set of songs geared toward finding who we truly are, inside and out.

Mighty Race is almost as if Joseph himself song this tune, the song is definitely one of the gems on the album. Daddy is the first tune Kenyatta ever made, it's a tribute to his father and the greatest tune on the album.

A Good Natured Riot at Ashland Coffee & Tea
It’s difficult to find the right words to describe A Good Natured Riot, but that dosn’t stop their legions of fans from coming out to see them. These five acoustic musicians have come from all over the map – geographically and musically – to create a truly inspired sound. Some have described their it as folk-funk. Some say it’s “ecleticgrass” infused with some jazzy soul. But all seem to agree: it’s a lot of fun.The band performs with a variety of musical instruments – from guitars and fiddles to dobro and even a washboard to add to the fun. Punctuated by tight harmonies and percussive textures, A Good Natured Riot has found a unique groove all their own. To figure out your own description, you’ll just have to experience them for yourself.

Recklessly Abandoned at Ashland Coffee & Tea
Formerly known as “Reckless Abandon” Recklessly Abandoned is the unique, creative music ensemble first gathered together by Page Wilson to present his distinctive approach to live performance. It was not only the name of the group, but also the approach to the music; to play with “reckless abandon.” Rooted in the blues, folk, bluegrass, and country traditions of their native Virginia soil, the performances are spontaneous and original; yet with the professional musical expertise to go anywhere with a song, and take their audience along with them.
Charles Arthur, Chris Fuller, Jay Gillespie, Jim Skelding, and Billy Lux reunite for an evening of great ”Purebred American Mongrel Music” now known as ”Recklessly Abandoned”

Jackass Flats and Folk Soul Revival at the Camel
$8.
Jackass Flats - http://www.jackass-flats.com/
There's no shortage of bluegrass music in the Mountain State, but Jackass Flats, from Richmond, Va. has drawn a sizable fan base for it's unique take on the art form. The group -- four, five or six men, depending on the lineup, and named the 2002 Virginia State Bluegrass Champions -- focuses on plucky, high-energy renditions of its own tunes and traditional pieces. You can get a taste of the group's style, and see why fans love these guys in concert, on their debut, self-titled CD, "Jackass Flats." (The name comes from a once-busy crossroads on Route 60 in Virginia that now has nothing but a sign and an old building.)
Folk Soul Revival - http://www.facebook.com/folksoulrevival

The All New Original Tribute to the Blues Brothers at Modlin Center
“…two hours of superb tributes to blues music” — Jersey Evening Post, United Kingdom
They’re back – the legendary Original Tribute to the Blues Brothers. The show that started it all has been selling out all over Europe these past few years, but Jake and Elwood Blues know that home is where the heart is. Last time they were in the U.K. they smashed, crashed, and crooned their way through sell-out shows – no one does it like these brothers and they’re back to show you just why they are the best. Featuring original members from the West End run, the (all new!) ‘Original’ show brings you all those amazing favorite moments and songs with a few new twists, a few new moves, and a clean, freshly laundered suit.
The boys are joined by the sassy Bluettes, three amazing ladies with voices to knock you clean off your perch. So don the sunglasses, dig out your best pork pie hat, and buff up those dancing shoes, because the Blues Brothers cordially request your presence for a night of the best music, the best mov…

“The show is dazzling, mysterious, and disturbing. That there are any paintings to show at all is something of a miracle” – The Guardian, London
“A breathtaking and truly remarkable exhibition…the greatest exhibition of the century” – Telegraph, London
The once-in-a-lifetime U.K. National Gallery exhibit “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan” brings together the largest ever number of da Vinci’s paintings including rare surviving paintings, international loans that have never before travelled, and a newly discovered, never-before-publicly exhibited painting, the Salvator Mundi.
Captured live at the U.K. National Gallery on the eve of the exhibition opening, LEONARDO LIVE offers an unprecedented opportunity for audiences worldwide to experience these da Vinci works. The historic exhibition is sold out in London – with tickets reselling at $700 a piece – and, due to the fragility of the paintings, the exhibition cannot tour.

The Blue Dogs at Ashland Coffee & Tea
With nearly a million miles logged and 100,000 records sold, South Carolina’s BLUE DOGS continue to ride the highways, churn out new music, and win over new fans. Founded initially as a part-time love affair for writing and playing music, the BLUE DOGS spent the better part of the early 90’s honing their songs and live show at venues throughout Mid-Atlantic. Although the band has grown a legion of fans over the years, the BLUE DOGS’ musical diversity has been difficult to classify. Having started as a bluegrass/country/folk-rock duo, and then with the advent of a full band in 96, the BLUE DOGS found themselves with echoes of bluegrass, jam band rock, commercial roots pop/rock, and Americana….somewhere to the right of Americana and left of mainstream Nashville.

Pricing: $12-$75.
Tickets - http://www.richmondsymphony.com/tickets.asp
Program Repertoire
John Adams ~ The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra
Mendelssohn ~ Die erste Walpurgisnacht
Beethoven ~ Symphony No. 7 in A Major
Perspective from Steven Smith
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 makes powerful use of the repetition of small melodic and rhythmic fragments to build a work of stupendous energy and excitement. This is not all that different than the work of current American “Minimalist” composer John Adams, who created his landmark opera “Nixon in China” as a series of imaginative scenarios depicting the historic visit of Richard Nixon to Red China. The dream sequence that is excerpted as The Chairman Dances uses a very similar repetitive rhythmic propulsion as Beethoven’s symphony nearly two centuries earlier.

1000 shows, 9 years, and 200,000 miles have passed since Dean Fields went on the road to pursue a career in music. BioDiesel lies in razor-thin space between band and DJ, synthetic and human, man and machine. The duo is an inventive collaboration between Johnny Rabb and Clay Parnell. Modern electronic dance music has always been primarily about beats and basslines—and that fact is ever more present today.
Naturally, when you take a world-class drummer and a celebrated bassist who are also passionate producers, the elements are there for a super-charged ensemble that shatters boundaries and dares to take the musical genres they explore to thrilling new places.

The Trigger System presents Lights at Canal Club
7:00 doors
$13.00/$15.00
Lights - http://music.iamlights.com/
When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics.
This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop—in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists—but after her 2008 self-titled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up The Listening, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album Siberia. And by choosing such leftfield collaborators as live electronic outfit Holy Fuck and rising rapper Shad, she also opened up her sound.

Neon Indian / Purity Ring at The National

with
Purity Ring - http://thepurityring.tumblr.com/
Purity Ring is the futuristic pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James. Purity Ring makes lullabies for the club, drawing equally from airy 90s r&b, lush dream pop, and the powerful immediacy of the very best modern indie pop. Megan James' remarkable voice is at once ecstatic and ethereal, soaring joyfully through Roddick's carefully chopped beats, trembling synths, and past her perfect counterpoint – a ghostly pitched-down vocal which both underscores hooks and renders the entire musical backdrop beautifully alien.

The Lemonheads - http://www.thelemonheads.net/index.php
Evan Griffith Dando formed The Lemonheads with two high school buddies in late winter '86, in their senior year at Boston's tiny Commonwealth School. A few months later, they spawned what is now one of the most sought-after punk relics of the 80s, the indie EP Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners.
Boston-based Taang! Records immediately picked up on The Lemonheads, with three college radio pleasers to follow: the LPs Hate Your Friends (1987), Creator (1988), and Lick (1989). In 1990 Atlantic Records took notice of the massively expanding Lemonheads fanbase in Europe (where they toured in 1989) and America by signing the band and releasing their well-received (in Cambridge, Massachusetts) fourth LP, Lovey.

Jane's Addiction - http://www.janesaddiction.com/
Great bands break rules, but legends write their own. JANE'S ADDICTION have actually written the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience. Their songs serve as the Ten Commandments for alt rock, inspiring an entire generation of bands such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. When the Los Angeles quartet came along, they merged alternative and rock like no one before, becoming the first alternative rock band, creating a new sound and attitude.

eighth blackbird: Less Is More at Modlin Center
Inspired by the quiet, thoughtful simplicity of minimalist visual art, eighth blackbird explores what “less” can mean when translated to music. The stark, simple beauty of Lucier’s Fidelio Trio and Feldman’s Durations I act as analogues to the vast color-filled canvases of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.
Lang’s fast and funky these broken wings obsesses over a simple chord progression, while Pintscher’s Figura V/Assonanza hovers, barely audible, in the ether. Colliding and contrasting with these explorations of “less” are more complex, dense pieces by Philippe Hurel and György Ligeti, which will test even eighth blackbird’s skills.

$17.50 ADV / $20 Door
The Head and The Heart - http://www.theheadandtheheart.com/
Composed largely of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or Crosby Stills Nash & Young with more instrumental force. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.

Railroad Earth at The National

$20 ADV / $22 DOOR
RR Earth - http://www.railroadearth.com
Railroad Earth is one of America's greatest bands playing today, plain and simple. They sing of our nation's changing landscape and social ills with a commitment reminiscent of Woody Guthrie, while interpolating instrumental timbres that could have been pulled from Celtic or Cajun culture. And as anyone who has caught them live will attest, their concerts are imbued with the fire-in-the-belly passion of straight-ahead, blue collar rock & roll.
Then there is the newest album from the New Jersey sextet, which is the most cohesive embodiment of their myriad gifts to date—hence the decision to simply call it Railroad Earth—showcasing nine new selections that draw strength and inspiration from an acknowledgment of our shared past, while also embracing new ideas and celebrating diversity… just like America when she is at her best.

Sons of Bill at Capital Ale House
Free!
Sons of Bill - http://sonsofbill.com/
Bill Wilson is from Central Virginia. He is a professor of philosophical theology, a songwriter, an expert on the southern agrarian movement, and a father of six.
His three eldest sons returned to Virginia to start a rock band in 2006 with long-time musical compadres Seth Green and Todd Wellons. As a
tribute to the man who taught them how to play guitar, write songs, drive a stick-shift, and back up a trailer, the band decided to name themselves Sons of Bill.
With two independently released albums, and a live show known to evolve from acoustic ballads into sweaty stage dives, the Sons of Bill are quickly establishing themselves as one of the hardest working and most promising rock bands in the South.
