art/dance/theater
This black and white photography exhibit features images from an eight-day trip through East Germany in December and January 1989-90 during the waning days of Communism. This exhibition has traveled throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and has been exhibited at the Virginia Museum for Fine Arts in Richmond. It has served as a vehicle for presenting sensitive and revealing views of a nation that was on the verge of reunification. Photographs were taken by American photographer Page Chichester and Helmut Brinkman, a German photographer. Travelogue/Dialogue was written by Page Chichester and Katharina Giebel-Chichester. Katharina, an artist and West German native, composed the second part of the commentary in the catalogue as a recollection of growing up with memories of the Berlin Wall. HURT with The Wandering Madman
Kirk Avenue Music Hall
This will be a standing room only show
HURT’s music veers between whispering and roaring, melody and brutality, crushing power chords and gentle acoustic moments. The convergence of those extremes -- delivered in irregular time signature define the “HURT” sound. Yet just when it seems that it's all thunder and lightning, they shift into a cheerful melody with gentle acoustic guitars displaying a drastically different side of the band.
Traces of Tool, Nirvana, and mid-period Metallica flicker throughout, but Hurt has created a remarkably individual sound. It is mainstream enough to fit in on rock radio, yet unusual and edgy enough to appeal to the fringes.
------------------------------------
Opening for HURT will be The Wandering Madman. He is a simple man who can no longer ignore how precious life is and how important it is to set your sights on something extraordinary. He traded in a life of comforts for the confines of a cargo van that he now calls home.
He travels the country, spending…

Hollins Room, Wyndham Robertson Library
Reception to follow.
Discussion with the Author: Friday, February 10, 2012 – 11:00 am-noon
Hollins Room, Wyndham Robertson Library
Mat Johnson’s latest novel is Pym, a study and parody of Edgar Allan Poe’s sci-fi classic "journey to the center of the earth." I imagine Poe choking on half the things Johnson writes in this novel, and tipping his tiny hat in admiration to the rest." Johnson's other works include the novels "Drop" and "Hunting in Harlem;" the nonfiction novella "The Great Negro Plot;" and the comic books "Incognegro" and "Dark Rain." He is a recipient of the United States Artist James Baldwin Fellowship, The Hur…

David Mayfield Parade
Kirk Avenue Music Hall
Grammy-nominated musician and producer David Mayfield is a force of nature on stage. His energy and out and out enthusiasm for performing are evident at every show whether it's with Cadillac Sky, The Avett Brothers, Jessica Lea Mayfield or his own band, The David Mayfield Parade. Mayfield's songwriting "feels as classic as {his}...wardrobe" says Paste Magazine and his song "Ballad Of Restored Confidence" is featured as the cover mounted track on November's issue Uncut Magazine. His forthcoming album "The David Mayfield Parade" is an extension of his irrepressible energy and abundant love for the music that has inspired him over his young lifetime. It listens like an AM radio record with strings and production born out of such classics as Randy Newman's Sail Away or Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water but without forgetting the fundamentals of rock-n-roll!
His new album reflects the numerous influences that come from a lifetime of being immersed in American music and channeling its unique fo…

Mr. Humphreys is a painter, printmaker, and maker of objects. Many people have known him personally: but not his work which he religiously hides and often enough destroys. Come look at the work.*
*Paraphrased and appropriated from Balthus, 1968

His first book of poetry, "Mose" (1994), the story of a prison inmate in Texas, was called "a remarkable achievement" by the "Richmond Times-Dispatch," "a narrative both rich in allusion and motivations, a long poem both complex and yet easily approachable by the general reader, and, finally, staggering in its delineation of life gone wrong." His second book, "The Ring Scar" (2010), is the story of a divorce as told through the voices of the husband and wife. He was one of just 42 American poets chosen from over 1,000 applicants to receive a $25,000 fellowship in 2009 from the National Endowment for the Arts.
