Data Visualization: Achieving Quality at the End of the Data-to-Information Life Cycle

Please join us for a presentation from Michael Scofield, an information architect for a major U.S. financial services company! Data goes through many steps before it becomes information whose ultimate value is realized when supporting major decisions by managers and executives. How that information is finally computed and presented contains significant quality issues. Decision-makers don’t want to worry about granularity of data, or how it is integrated, or how it is aggregated and transformed into information. They also are not interested in the various “qualifications” of information expression (all the stuff which should be placed in footnotes), even though they should understand (as Deming put it) the “weaknesses of the data”. But professional competence demands that we tell them enough to not miss-use the data. Then, we must express it in ways which are not misleading. Graphical expression is almost always more understandable than tabular. But it must be expressed clearly, and in the cultur… Organization: Data Management Assoc. Adventures in Scaling the Multicore Memory Wall

Moore's Law continues to hold resulting in a doubling of the number transistors that can be integrated on a single chip every two years. However, thermal issues and global interconnect speeds have made it impossible to use this plethora of transistors to design a single processor core that runs at twice the clock rate of the previous generation to provide the doubling of performance that we have come to expect. However, two cores running at the same clock rate will fit on a single chip and will provide, in theory, this performance doubling. However, the "memory wall" that architects have been tackling since the early 90's looms even larger in multicores. The last line of defense before running into this memory wall is the multicore cache architecture. Many different cache topologies have been proposed/implemented; effective management of these on-chip caches is crucial to multicore performance. This talk will cover three different approaches to multicore cache management. If the application thread mapping and… Organization: University of Washington - Computer Science and Engineering.
