It's hard to imagine, but just 650 miles from La Crosse in South Dakota people are living in third world conditions. The unemployment rate on the Pine Ridge Reservation is well above 80 percent. Close to half of all the people living on Pine Ridge live below the poverty level. Life expectancy on the Reservation is the lower than anywhere in the western hemisphere except for Haiti. Women live on average 52 years; men just 48. Access to quality health care is extremely limited. Indian Health services, which is run by the Federal government, is under-funded and understaffed. In May 2010, News 19’s Amy DuPont traveled with a team of health care professionals from Gunderson Lutheran to Pine Ridge. These doctors and nurses use their vacation time and pay their own way to provide free health care on the Reservation for one week, each month. Miller Elementary School in Tomah will be holding their annual Mardi Gras Carnival on Friday February 10th at 5:00pm in their school gym. There will be over 100 raffle baskets, over 75 silent auction items, food, and games. The Laura Ingalls Wilder museum in Burr Oak, Iowa is hosting a fund raiser February 17 from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm at the North Winneshiek school (one mile south and three miles east of Burr Oak). The meal includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, beverages and homemade cakes. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 12 years and under with preschool ages, free. The silent auction will have items for all ages and interests. Starting at 6:00 pm there will be 2-3 homemade pies auctioned off every 15 minutes. Drugs and Aging (Core Gero Certificate Program)

Taught by & nursing professor and pharmacist, this program examines the current use of medications by elders, including drug interactions, adverse drug reactions and ineffective outcomes: Drugs commonly used for cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes and neurological diseases are described through case studies. Common medications used in pain management and psychotropic drugs are also discussed.

An exhibit featuring artwork created by students in grades K-5 from Holmen’s four elementary schools. Students’ works depict a wide range of subjects through drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. The Gallery is free of charge but donations are welcome.
